Disney announced a planned $1.5 billion equity investment in Epic Games in 2024, alongside a multiyear collaboration to build a games and entertainment universe connected to Fortnite. The $1.5 billion is the announced investment in Epic—not a stated budget for developing the universe—and Disney did not say it was buying all of Epic Games.
What is Disney’s $1.5 billion Epic Games deal?
On February 7, 2024, Disney and Epic Games announced a planned equity investment and a multiyear collaboration. The companies said they would create a persistent games and entertainment universe, powered by Unreal Engine, that would interoperate with Fortnite. The original announcement said the transaction was subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory approvals. Disney’s announcement does not describe the investment as a project-development budget or say Disney acquired the whole company.

For a personal-finance reader, the key distinction is between an investment in a company and a consumer product purchase: the announcement was about Disney investing in Epic and partnering on a long-term digital entertainment project. It did not announce a required purchase, a specific product catalog, or an immediate shopping offer for fans.
What did Disney and Epic say they would build?
The companies described a persistent, open games and entertainment universe that would connect with Fortnite and let fans engage with Disney properties. Disney named Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, and Avatar. The announcement said players would be able to play, watch, create, share content, and engage with Disney stories and characters; prepared remarks by CEO Bob Iger also described shopping for digital and physical goods as an intended capability. These were goals, not confirmation that every feature or a retail catalog was already available.

The announcement positioned Unreal Engine as the technology behind the project. Disney said Epic’s engine was already used in game development, film and streaming production, and more than 15 Disney Parks attractions, citing Kingdom Hearts 3, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, and Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run as examples. Disney’s release also said the companies had reached hundreds of millions of players through prior Fortnite integrations, seasonal collaborations, in-game activations, and live events.
Is Disney building a game inside Fortnite?
Not exactly as described in the original announcement. Disney and Epic announced a broader universe that would interoperate with Fortnite, rather than simply a single Disney game housed inside Fortnite. The announcement referred to a persistent ecosystem, player-created experiences, and ways to share content. That language points to a wider connected experience, but the announcement did not provide a complete product design or feature-by-feature delivery plan.

Disney’s announcement cited the Marvel Nexus War with Galactus as an example of an earlier Fortnite event, saying it drew more than 15.3 million concurrent players. That historical figure illustrates the reach of a past collaboration; it is not a measure of the new universe’s users or performance.
What is available, and when will the universe launch?
The February 2024 announcement gave no launch date, product catalog, or detailed feature schedule. In Disney’s May 6, 2026 second-quarter earnings release, the company described the Epic collaboration as central to its interactive-platform strategy and cited The Simpsons on Fortnite as an engagement example: Disney reported 780 million hours played by more than 80 million unique players. Those figures apply to The Simpsons Fortnite launch Disney referenced, not to the entire Disney-Epic universe. Disney’s earnings release is evidence of the partnership’s ongoing strategic relevance, not a comprehensive progress report.

- An Epic Games account is required to redeem an Epic Games Store Card code
- If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
- The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
- Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. However, if you purchase items in the web Item Shop — or another platform where you play Fortnite — those items will be available in your Locker across all platforms.

A TechRadar report published August 15, 2026, described later Fortnite islands and a connected Star Wars experience while characterizing the broader vision as still developing. That is secondary reporting, not official confirmation that the complete persistent-universe plan has launched. TechRadar’s report should be read in that context: individual islands or activations do not by themselves establish that every announced capability is delivered.
Why did Disney make the investment?
Disney framed the partnership as a way to reach audiences through interactive platforms and bring its entertainment properties together with Epic’s gaming technology and Fortnite community. In its 2024 announcement, Disney cited more than 3 billion video game players worldwide, attributing the estimate to its own release without naming the estimate’s original source. It also said its mobile games had 1.5 billion global installs and that nine Disney game franchises had each generated more than $1 billion in sales. These are Disney-published figures from the announcement, not independently established measurements here.

The companies also pointed to prior engagement. Disney said the Marvel Nexus War with Galactus Fortnite event attracted more than 15.3 million concurrent players. These historical company-reported numbers provide context for Disney’s interest in gaming, but they do not establish the financial return on the Epic investment or forecast the new project’s results.
