A funding round reported on 24 January 2023 was led by Breakthrough Energy Ventures, the climate investment firm associated with Gates, for Rumin8, a Perth-based startup developing livestock feed supplements intended to cut methane from cattle. The investment was meant to help commercialize Rumin8’s product; it does not establish that the supplement is now on sale or that it has delivered a particular reduction at commercial scale. The Guardian reported the funding and company’s plans.
What did Bill Gates invest $12 million in?
The $12 million figure refers to a funding round for Rumin8, not a donation to cattle owners or a payment for cows. The Guardian reported that Breakthrough Energy Ventures spearheaded the round on 24 January 2023. Rumin8 said the money would help move its methane-reducing feed supplement toward commercialization.
Rumin8’s managing director, David Messina, described the company’s 2023 development work this way: “Our laboratory results continue to yield excellent results, our animal trials are reflecting the laboratory results, and the financial modeling we are undertaking is indicating we will be able to supply our products at a commercial price point.” That is a company statement reported at the time, not independent confirmation of current availability or commercial-scale impact.
What is Rumin8, and what does the supplement do?
Rumin8 is an Australian startup based in Perth that was developing feed supplements intended to reduce enteric methane: methane produced as part of a ruminant animal’s digestion and released largely through belching. The Guardian’s 2023 account described its approach as including red seaweed and rangeland plants intended to replicate a naturally occurring anti-methanogenic compound.

That description reflects what was reported in 2023. The cited sources do not establish Rumin8’s present formulation, whether it has launched commercially, where it is sold, or how it performs in routine farm conditions. A funding announcement and promising trial statements are not the same as proof of a product’s current market reach or results.
Are Rumin8 and Bovaer the same product?
No. Rumin8’s supplement and Bovaer are separate methane-reduction approaches. Bovaer is a 3-NOP feed additive owned by DSM-Firmenich. Full Fact’s December 2024 review says Gates was not involved in developing Bovaer; it should not be described as the product funded in the Rumin8 investment round. Full Fact explains the distinction and summarizes the claims about Bovaer.

- PIGS: For holding and toning swine to desired show weight, feed ½ to 2 pounds per head per day with 2 to 3 pounds of complete feed until desired show weight is reached.
- SHEEP & GOATS: For holding and toning sheep and goats, feed at the rate of ¼ to ½ pound, replacing that amount of complete feed.
- CATTLE: For growing and finishing cattle, feed at the rate of 1 to 2 pounds.
- A constant supply of fresh, clean water is also necessary.
Results reported for one additive cannot be transferred to another. Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA) says Australian research has observed Bovaer-associated methane reductions of 60–90% in feedlots and 15% for grazing animals. Those figures belong to Bovaer and MLA’s research summary, not to Rumin8. MLA’s methane-reduction FAQ provides its summary.
How much can feed additives reduce methane?
There is no single percentage that applies to every cattle operation. Results depend on the additive, dose, how often animals receive it, animal type, and whether feed can be controlled. The Australian Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water summarized results presented at its MERiL 2026 forum; the figures below are reported for distinct products and trial settings, not as a head-to-head ranking.

| Additive or approach | Reported methane reduction | Conditions and attribution |
|---|---|---|
| Bromoform derived from Asparagopsis or a synthetic form | Up to 98% in lot-fed cattle; 88% in sheep pen trials; 30% in lactating dairy cows under grazing conditions | Australian government MERiL 2026 forum summary. Results differ by animal and feeding system. |
| 3-NOP (Bovaer) | 22–70% in cattle; 20% in sheep | Australian government MERiL 2026 forum summary; not a Rumin8 result. |
| Desmanthus | About 9% | Australian government MERiL 2026 forum summary; reported in wet seasons. |
| Brassica fodder | 37% | Australian government MERiL 2026 forum summary; sheep. |
| Polygain | About 34% | Australian government MERiL 2026 forum summary. |
| Agolin Ruminant | About 22% | Australian government MERiL 2026 forum summary. |
| Probiotics | About 10% | Australian government MERiL 2026 forum summary. |
| Nitrate supplements | Up to 34% | Australian government MERiL 2026 forum summary; grazing cattle. |
The department cautions that dosage and feeding frequency affect effectiveness. Results from lot-fed cattle or sheep in pens should not be read as guaranteed outcomes for grazing herds, where consistent delivery can be harder. It also reports mixed results when products are combined: one combination reduced methane by 47% but also reduced animal growth. A lower methane figure alone does not tell a farmer whether a treatment is practical or beneficial overall.
The same government program describes delivery research involving lick blocks, molasses licks, loose licks, pellets, cubes, drinking-water systems, and sustained-release boluses. These are examples of systems developed and field-tested, not proof that a particular additive or device is a routine consumer purchase. The department says the Australian government invested $29 million through MERiL.

How does the seaweed research relate to Rumin8?
Asparagopsis seaweed is part of a separate Australian research and commercialization pathway. In August 2020, CSIRO announced that FutureFeed would commercialize a livestock feed additive made from Asparagopsis. CSIRO reported methane reductions of more than 80% in beef and dairy cattle research trials in Australia and the United States. Those are historical trial results for that pathway, not Rumin8 results or a guaranteed effect on farms. CSIRO’s announcement describes the FutureFeed project.
Rumin8’s 2023 description also mentioned red seaweed, but that does not make Rumin8 and FutureFeed the same product or establish that they use identical formulations. CSIRO Chief Executive Dr Larry Marshall said of FutureFeed: “FutureFeed enables agriculture and the environment to be partners not competitors, helps overcome negative perceptions of the cattle industry, and gives Australian farmers an advantage in the global marketplace as first adopters of this Aussie innovation.”

What is known about Rumin8’s current availability?
The cited investment report dates to January 2023 and establishes the funding announcement and the company’s stated commercialization goal at that time. It does not establish Rumin8’s current launch status, product formulation, sales, or independent performance in commercial herds. The MERiL results provide broader evidence about methane-reduction research in Australia, but they do not verify Rumin8-specific claims.
For readers evaluating a current product claim, the useful questions are whether it is the same additive studied, what dose and feeding schedule were used, whether the trial involved grazing or controlled feeding, and whether the measured outcome also affected growth or production. Regulatory approval and safety conclusions are specific to a product and jurisdiction; they should not be assumed to carry from Bovaer to Rumin8 or another additive.
