David Clowes has said he expects that Derby County will eventually pass to a future steward, and that he wants the club to be in a better place when that happens. His 8 August 2025 message did not announce a sale, name a buyer or give a timetable. A separate proposed takeover by Turki Alalshikh’s Lion Sport was abandoned in August 2026; Derby then said the club was off the market.
What did David Clowes say about handing over Derby County?
In a supporter message published by Derby County on 8 August 2025, Clowes wrote: “Nobody knows exactly what the future holds but one thing is for sure, none of us will be here forever. But when it’s time to hand over the reins to the next steward of the club, I want above everything else to be able to say we left Derby County in a better place than where we found it.” Read Clowes’s message on Derby County’s official site.
The words describe an eventual handover and the condition he hopes the club will be in. They do not say that a sale is underway or imminent, and they give no buyer, date or terms. Reading the message as a sale announcement goes beyond what Clowes said.
Is Derby County for sale?
The later takeover news provides a separate, more specific answer. On 10 August 2026, BBC Sport reported that Lion Sport, associated with Turki Alalshikh, had abandoned its proposed purchase of Derby County. Derby’s statement, quoted by the BBC, said: “For the benefit of any doubt, the club is now off the market.” The club also said it would continue with the support of Clowes Developments. According to the BBC, the proposed purchase process had been sanctioned by the English Football League and Independent Football Regulator before Lion Sport withdrew. The report attributed the withdrawal to the time taken for ratification. The proposal did not become a completed takeover.

- 8 August 2025: Clowes published his message about eventually handing the reins to a future steward.
- 10 August 2026: BBC Sport reported that Lion Sport’s proposed purchase had been abandoned and that Derby said the club was off the market.
The 2025 message is a general statement about the club’s eventual future. The 2026 report concerns a particular proposed transaction that did not proceed. The later proposal does not turn Clowes’s earlier words into an announcement of a sale.
