David Clowes reaffirmed that Derby County would back manager John Eustace in the transfer window using the budget agreed earlier in 2026. His 22 August 2026 statement did not reveal the budget’s value or announce a new cash injection. He also said the club had been taken off the market after a potential takeover fell through.
What did David Clowes pledge?
In a message published by Derby County on 22 August 2026, owner and chairman David Clowes said he had reassured the manager that the club’s commitment was “total” and that it would back him in the transfer window with the plans already in place, using “the same budget we’d agreed.” Read Clowes’s statement.
The key point is continuity: Clowes said the club would proceed with its previously agreed transfer-window plan despite the time spent pursuing a potential purchase of the club. The statement is not an announcement of a larger budget or additional funding.
How much money has Clowes promised?
The August statement gives no amount. It does not specify the transfer budget, identify a separate cash injection, or set out a longer-term funding guarantee. There is therefore no figure in that announcement that can be reliably described as the amount Clowes promised.

Why does owner funding matter to Derby County?
April supporters’ board meeting notes provide financial context distinct from the August pledge. The club presented material on its cash position, future budgets, committed transfer and wage spending, projected compliance with Profit and Sustainability rules, and funding requirements from Clowes Developments. The notes said Derby relied on ongoing ownership funding and aimed to avoid losses beyond the position agreed with ownership. See the Derby County Supporters’ Board information.
That context helps explain why the pledge to retain the earlier budget matters, but it does not quantify the August budget. The April notes and August statement do not provide directly comparable sums, so neither establishes the total financial backing available to the club.

What happened to the potential takeover?
Clowes said the club had been taken off the market, adding: “I’m not wasting any more time on what might have been.” His message followed a potential takeover that collapsed in August 2026. It did not name a prospective buyer or disclose proposed terms or a sale price.
June supporters’ board notes had described investment discussions without confirming specific parties. They said the owners would decide when, to whom, and how much of the club might be sold; the notes also said the club would not confirm or deny reports while discussions and regulatory or legal processes continued. Those earlier notes describe the position at that time, while Clowes’s August message states that the club was then off the market. Derby County Supporters’ Board information.
