First, verify the alert through the blockchain project’s official incident page or release channel. Then check exactly which network, feature and user role are affected. Pause only the affected activity, follow the project’s instructions for your role, and keep transaction records. An emergency upgrade does not automatically mean every holder must move funds or stop using the network.
What should I do first?
- Confirm the announcement is genuine. Navigate to a project domain or channel you already trust; do not follow an unsolicited support message, direct message or search advertisement. Check the project’s official status page, website or release repository.
- Read the scope, not just the headline. Identify the chain and asset, affected feature or transaction type, activation condition or deadline, required software version, and which roles must act: holders, node operators, validators, miners, bridges, exchanges or service providers.
- Follow the instruction for your role. A notice may require an operator upgrade, temporarily pause one kind of transfer, or tell ordinary holders that no action is needed. Do not assume a security upgrade requires a seed phrase migration or a new wallet.
- Stop using only the affected feature until it is cleared. Wait for the official restoration notice before attempting a paused transaction or bridge route. Do not substitute another network or bridge unless the project explicitly says that is safe.
- Save records. Keep transaction IDs, timestamps, receipts and exchange or trade records, especially if the announcement describes a rollback or recovery.
These steps are general precautions, not a live alert for any particular chain. The project’s latest instructions and your provider’s separate status notices determine what is currently available.

What should I do with a self-custody wallet?
First establish the exact chain and token network. A ticker alone may not identify the network or bridge route involved. Then determine whether the notice addresses wallet holders or only people operating network infrastructure.

- If the notice says no holder action is currently needed, do not make a speculative transfer or attempt a migration. Monitor the official status page for changes.
- If a chain, bridge or transaction type is paused, wait for the project to say it is restored before using it.
- Never disclose your seed phrase or private key to someone offering incident help. Use the project’s official support or claims instructions.
Instructions can differ even when both events are described as security upgrades. Firo’s 2026 hard-fork release said existing Spark coins, balances, addresses and keys remained valid, while nodes that did not upgrade would become incompatible after activation. That was a project-specific instruction, not a general rule for other networks. Read Firo’s official release information.

Should I move my coins before a hard fork?
Not unless the project or your custodian specifically instructs you to. A hard fork does not by itself establish that holders should transfer assets, and an unnecessary transfer can expose you to the very feature or route that has been paused.
Check whether the upgrade requires action from holders or from operators. For Firo’s 2026 upgrade, the published instruction was to upgrade wallets and nodes before block 1,371,000; old nodes would no longer be compatible after activation. The same release said existing Spark assets and keys remained valid. Those details applied to that Firo fork only. Firo’s official release information.
Do not improvise a migration, switch token networks or use a different bridge to work around a pause. Use a substitute route only if the project explicitly confirms it is safe.

Is it safe to send crypto during a network upgrade?
There is no universal yes-or-no answer: it depends on the affected chain, feature and service. If the project has paused the transaction type you intend to use, wait for its restoration notice. If it has not, check the exact notice and the status of the wallet, bridge or exchange involved before sending.
Some incidents limit only one feature. During Zcash remediation in 2026, Orchard actions were temporarily disabled while Sapling and transparent transactions continued operating. A Zcash Community Forum report put the Orchard suspension at approximately 24 hours; that duration describes that incident, not a normal upgrade window. See the Zcash Community Forum report. Other incidents affect a particular bridge or sidechain rather than all transactions on a mainchain. Elastos said its mainchain was operating while ESC block production and bridge-mediated transfers were paused, and instructed users not to initiate ELA-to-ESC or ESC-to-ELA transfers until a restoration notice. What if my exchange has paused deposits or withdrawals?
Check the exchange’s own announcement and asset/network status page. Custodians manage deposits and withdrawals separately from your personal wallet, and their services may not resume at the same moment as the underlying chain. Trading may remain available even when transfers are paused.
For example, Binance’s notice for a BNB Smart Chain upgrade scheduled for 2026-08-25 at 02:30 UTC said deposits and withdrawals would be suspended around the upgrade, trading would continue, and transfers would reopen after the network was stable. That date is historical, and the policy describes that announcement only; it is not a general exchange rule. Read Binance’s upgrade announcement.
A missing deposit credit does not by itself prove funds are lost. Save the transaction ID and contact the exchange through its official support route. Zilliqa’s incident page, for instance, directed users with exchange-held ZIL to contact their exchange. Check Zilliqa’s official incident information.

What if I operate a node, validator, miner, bridge or wallet service?
Operator duties can be time-sensitive and differ from holder instructions. Read the project’s release notes for the required version and activation condition, then install only software distributed through official project channels. Verify checksums or signatures when the project provides them.
- Confirm the required software version and the block height or time by which it must be active.
- Check whether your dependent services—such as a bridge, wallet backend, hosted node or exchange integration—have completed their own updates.
- Monitor official release and incident channels for changes to activation or restoration status.
Firo’s 2026 notice, for example, required the relevant wallets and nodes to upgrade before block 1,371,000. Zano’s recovery notice also cautioned that third-party services update independently, so users should verify that a service is operating on the recovered chain. What if a rollback or chain recovery is announced?
Do not resend a payment merely because a wallet or explorer shows it as confirmed on the chain before recovery. Check whether the transaction appears on the recovered chain, and use the project’s or custodian’s official reconciliation process before retrying.

Zano’s 2026 recovery restarted at block height 3,833,000, immediately before Hard Fork 6, and affected approximately one month of chain history. Its notice said transactions confirmed during the affected period were not part of the recovered chain and instructed users to check final status before resending. Those figures and instructions describe that recovery, not a general rollback pattern. Read Zano’s official security-upgrade notice.
Keep transaction IDs, relevant timestamps, receipts and exchange or trade records. Use only official support and claims channels; a recovery request for your seed phrase, private key or an advance fee is a warning sign. Elastos stated that it would never request a seed phrase, private key or payment in response to its incident. Read the Elastos security notice.
Why emergency upgrades require different responses
“Emergency security upgrade” describes a situation, not one standard user action. Official incident notices have covered distinct responses:
- Temporary feature restriction followed by a fix: Firo temporarily restricted multi-input Spark spends, then used a hard fork to restore full functionality. It advised users who did not need to spend immediately to wait for activation. Firo’s official release information.
- Feature-specific remediation: Zcash temporarily disabled Orchard actions while other transaction types continued, then re-enabled Orchard through a hard fork with a corrected circuit. Zcash Community Forum report and Zcash Foundation update.
- Bridge or service pause: Elastos reported that its mainchain remained operational while ESC block production and bridge transfers were paused. Elastos security notice.
- Recovery that changes transaction history: Zano restarted from before Hard Fork 6 and told users to reconcile affected transactions before resending. Zano security-upgrade notice.
- Separate exchange controls: Binance’s BNB Smart Chain notice paused deposits and withdrawals while leaving trading available. Binance upgrade announcement.
For any incident, the practical questions are: what is affected, which roles must act, what is the activation deadline or restoration condition, whether history is being rolled back, which transactions remain available, and whether each exchange, wallet or bridge has separately restored service.
