For the qualifying-child dependency test, the school decides what counts as full-time, and the student generally must meet that standard during part of each of five calendar months in the tax year. Some education benefits use a different threshold: at least half of the school’s normal full-time workload. The right answer depends on which tax provision you are applying.
For a dependent, the school decides what counts as full time
For the qualifying-child student test, the IRS defines a full-time student as one “enrolled for the number of hours or courses the school considers to be full-time attendance.” The IRS gives no universal credit-hour minimum for this test, so check the school’s standard for the student’s program. See IRS Publication 501 (2025).
The student must attend for some part of each of at least five calendar months during the tax year. Those months do not have to be consecutive. This is a separate requirement from the school’s full-time enrollment standard.
The school must meet the IRS definition
For this test, the institution must have a regular teaching staff, a course of study, and a regularly enrolled student body. A qualifying full-time on-farm training course can also count. Publication 501 says an on-the-job training course, correspondence school, or school offering courses only through the Internet does not qualify as a school for this definition.

Full-time enrollment does not automatically make someone a dependent
Student status affects the age part of the qualifying-child test: a child generally must be under 19 at year end, or under 24 if a full-time student. A child who is permanently and totally disabled may qualify at any age under that age test. These rules do not establish dependency by themselves; the other requirements, including relationship, residence, and support, must also be considered. The IRS summarizes the rules on its dependents page.
Education tax benefits can use a half-time standard instead
Do not assume that the dependency definition controls education tax benefits. For the 2025 American opportunity credit, the student generally must be enrolled in a degree, certificate, or other recognized credential program and carry at least half the normal full-time workload for at least one academic period in the tax year. The school determines its normal workload standard, subject to the federal minimum described in IRS Publication 970 (2025).

The student loan interest deduction generally also requires at least half-time enrollment in a credential program at an eligible educational institution. The lifetime learning credit has its own enrollment condition; it should not be treated as requiring full-time enrollment or automatically assigned the AOTC’s half-time test. Each benefit also has separate eligibility rules. The IRS discusses education credits in its education credits questions and answers.
Which enrollment test applies?
| Tax rule | Enrollment standard | Relevant period |
|---|---|---|
| Qualifying-child student test | Hours or courses the school considers full-time | Part of each of at least five calendar months in the tax year; months need not be consecutive |
| American opportunity credit (2025 rule) | At least half the normal full-time workload, as determined by the institution and subject to the publication’s federal floor; credential program required | At least one academic period in the tax year |
| Student loan interest deduction | Generally at least half-time in a credential program at an eligible educational institution | Enrollment timing depends on the applicable deduction rules |
| Lifetime learning credit | Its own enrollment requirements; not a universal full-time test | Depends on the applicable credit rules |
Publication 970 is tax-year specific. For example, its 2025 rules allow certain academic periods beginning in the first three months of 2026 to be treated as beginning in 2025 when qualified expenses were paid in 2025. Do not carry that timing rule into another tax year without checking that year’s publication.

Common questions about student status and taxes
Does my child need to be full time for five months to be a dependent?
For the qualifying-child student test, the child must meet the school’s full-time standard during part of each of five calendar months in the tax year. Student status is only one part of the qualifying-child analysis, not a guarantee that someone can claim the child.
How many credits count as full time?
There is no single federal credit-hour number for the qualifying-child definition. Ask the school how many hours or courses count as full-time for the student’s course of study. Education benefits that use a half-time test likewise rely on the institution’s workload standard, subject to the applicable federal rules.
Can a parent claim a part-time student?
Part-time enrollment generally does not meet the full-time student condition used for the qualifying-child age test for a child 19 or older. A parent may still be able to claim someone under a different dependency test if its requirements are met; evaluate the full IRS dependency rules for the tax year rather than relying on enrollment alone.
