The “unexpected balance sheet” in the headline is not a set of financial statements. The available March 2025 article gives no revenue, profit, or balance-sheet figures for Dukaan. What it revisits is the company’s 2023 decision to lay off 90% of its customer-support team after introducing an AI chatbot—and founder Suumit Shah’s claims that support became faster and less costly.
What happened at Dukaan?
Dukaan is an Indian e-commerce company led by founder and CEO Suumit Shah. In July 2023, Shah announced that the company had laid off 90% of its customer-support team after introducing an AI assistant. Business Today reported his statement: “We had to layoff 90 per cent of our support team because of this AI chatbot. Tough? Yes. Necessary? Absolutely.” Business Today’s July 11, 2023 report attributes the staffing figure to Shah; it is not an independently audited workforce study.
The assistant was called Lina, according to YourStory’s July 2023 account. Shah also announced Bot9, an AI-as-a-service chatbot product. That account described Bot9 as a basic minimum viable product at the time and said its future development was uncertain; it does not establish the product’s current status.
What improvements did Shah report?
In the July 10, 2023 post covered by Business Today, Shah said the chatbot changed several support measures. The figures below are his reported claims, not independently verified results:

The reporting does not describe how these figures were calculated, what time period or case mix they cover, or whether the cost estimate includes implementation, monitoring, and escalation to human staff. “Instant” is Shah’s wording, not a measured response time supplied in the report. The claims show what the company said improved; they do not by themselves establish that customers received correct resolutions or were more satisfied.
Is there an unexpected financial balance sheet?
No financial balance sheet appears in the March 1, 2025 Indian Defence Review article. It provides no financial statements, revenue, profit, or independently assessed results covering a year after the change. It describes Shah as viewing the move as successful and repeats broad claims about better service, but those statements are not a verified financial turnaround.

A reported reduction in customer-support costs is not the same as a company balance sheet or proof that overall profitability improved. The available coverage does not provide the full cost accounting needed to establish the change’s net financial effect.

Shah’s account offers a speed comparison and an estimated support-cost reduction. It does not provide comparable evidence on several other factors that matter when judging an automation decision:

- Employment effects over time: coverage reports the 90% support-team layoff, but does not provide a later workforce assessment.
Without those measures, the reporting cannot establish whether Dukaan’s approach was better overall than a human-led or hybrid support operation. It documents a consequential staffing decision and the performance gains Shah said followed—not a complete evaluation of service outcomes, workforce impact, or company finances.
