Depending on your interests and the program you choose, it can build skills relevant to clothing, accessories, footwear, textiles, fashion buying and merchandising, styling, visual presentation, costume design, or independent work. These are possible directions, not guaranteed jobs: a strong portfolio and practical experience matter, and career prospects vary by location.
What does fashion design work involve?
Fashion designers create clothing, accessories and footwear. The work may involve researching trends, developing a collection concept, sketching, selecting fabrics and colors, using computer-aided design (CAD), making prototypes, presenting ideas and overseeing production. Designers may specialize in apparel, accessories, footwear or costumes. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) notes that creative ability is valuable alongside an understanding of production processes.
What careers can a fashion design degree lead to?
University career pages name a range of possible roles for fashion graduates, but those examples do not establish typical placement rates or guarantee that a particular degree qualifies you for a specific job. Consider what the work involves, not just the title.
Design and product development
In a design-focused role, you might develop product ideas from initial research and sketches through material choices, prototypes and production. Programs may teach textiles, fabrics and CAD; project work can help you build a portfolio that shows your ideas and technical ability.

Buying, merchandising and fashion business
Roles such as fashion buyer, retail buyer, fashion merchandiser, sales or management work with product assortment, retail presentation or the business around apparel. They may suit you if you want to work in fashion but do not want garment creation to be your main task. Career examples appear on pages from the University of Southampton, the University of Hawaiʻi, Pratt Institute and Iowa State University.
Textiles and materials
Textile design is a related route focused on fabric, prints or other materials. The degree’s fit depends on its specialization and the experience it offers; some programs include textile labs, collections or production facilities. Job titles and program offerings differ, so check the details at each school.

Independent work
Some designers are self-employed, making custom garments or developing their own clothing line. This route can combine design with business and production responsibilities, and should not be treated as an assured or typical result of earning a degree.
How much do fashion designers earn, and what is the U.S. outlook?
For the United States, the BLS reports a median annual wage of $80,960 for fashion designers in May 2025. It projects 0% employment change from 2025 to 2035 and about 2,500 openings per year on average over that period; most openings are expected to result from workers transferring occupations or leaving the labor force. These are U.S. figures for the occupation, not degree-specific outcomes or predictions of an individual graduate’s pay. Projections are estimates, not a promise of hiring.

What should you look for in a fashion design degree?
According to the BLS, fashion designers typically have a bachelor’s degree in a fine arts or business field, such as fashion design or fashion merchandising. The right program depends on the kind of work you want to pursue, so compare what students learn and make rather than relying on the degree title alone.
- Creative and technical coursework: Check how much the program covers textiles, fabrics, CAD, prototyping and production.
- Portfolio development: Ask what projects students complete and whether they leave with a portfolio. The BLS says employers use portfolios to assess designers’ talent and creativity.
- Industry experience: Find out about internships, placements or opportunities to work as an assistant designer. The BLS identifies internships and assistant-designer work as ways designers may gain experience.
- Facilities and specialization: Ask which studios, labs, collections or production facilities students can use and whether the course supports your preferred area, such as apparel, textiles or merchandising.
- Creative practice versus business: Compare how much time the course devotes to design work and to the commercial side of fashion.
University pages can show how programs frame their curriculum and possible careers, but they are not an independent ranking of program quality. Ask schools for details about course content, student work and experience opportunities.
