What Can Replace Oil in Transportation and Home Heating?

Electric vehicles, heat pumps, natural gas and renewable liquid fuels can all displace oil in some settings. The best fit depends on infrastructure, equipment and local conditions.

Oil can be replaced in road transport by electricity or, in some vehicles and fuel systems, biofuels. For home heating, alternatives include electric heat pumps, natural gas where service is available, and some renewable liquid-fuel blends. The right route depends on the vehicle or building, available infrastructure, equipment compatibility, local energy supply and prices; there is no single replacement that works everywhere.

What can replace gasoline or diesel in transportation?

For cars and other road vehicles, the main alternatives are electric power and fuels made partly or wholly from non-petroleum sources. These options do not all replace oil in the same way: an electric vehicle avoids using liquid motor fuel, while a blended fuel still contains petroleum.

Electricity for road travel

Battery electric vehicles use electricity instead of gasoline or diesel. Their practicality depends on the vehicle’s intended use, access to charging and local electricity conditions. Electricity also powers some public transit systems, so replacing transport oil is not limited to private cars.

The International Energy Agency’s 2026 analysis estimates that about half of oil-based road transport could be electrified competitively. That is an estimate of potential, not a statement about current market share or a forecast.

Ethanol blends in gasoline vehicles

Ethanol is commonly mixed with gasoline rather than used as a complete substitute. The U.S. Energy Information Administration says most U.S. motor gasoline contains up to 10% ethanol by volume. That figure describes a blend in U.S. gasoline; it does not mean that most vehicles run on pure ethanol.

Biodiesel and renewable diesel for diesel engines

Biodiesel is generally blended with petroleum diesel. Renewable diesel is a separate fuel: the EIA describes it as chemically equivalent to petroleum diesel and suitable as a drop-in fuel. Availability, fuel standards and compatibility depend on location and supplier, so a fuel’s name alone is not enough to confirm that it is appropriate for a particular vehicle.

Other transport fuels

The EIA’s alternative-fuel glossary also includes natural gas, propane, methanol and hydrogen. These are a menu of possible alternatives, not equally common substitutes for ordinary drivers. EIA notes that natural-gas and propane use in transportation is concentrated in fleet applications.

What can replace heating oil at home?

For a home heated with oil, the alternatives include electric systems, gas-fired equipment where a gas connection is available, and certain renewable liquid fuels. Replacing the fuel may also mean changing heating equipment or adapting the home’s electrical service; feasibility depends on the building and its existing system.

Heat pumps and other electric heating

A heat pump can replace an oil-fired furnace or boiler when the home, distribution system, climate, electrical capacity and installation plan are suitable. Unlike a resistance heater, a heat pump moves heat from the surrounding air or ground into the home. The IEA says heat pumps typically deliver three to five units of heat per unit of electricity input; actual performance depends on the system and conditions.

The IEA’s 2026 analysis estimates that about half of residential fuel consumption could be electrified competitively. This describes estimated competitive potential, not the share of homes currently using electricity or a prediction of future adoption.

Natural gas

Natural gas is a common alternative in places with gas service, and the EIA says most new and replacement home heating systems use natural gas or electricity. Gas remains a fossil fuel. Whether converting from oil makes sense depends on whether service is available, the cost of conversion, local policies and fuel prices.

Renewable heating oil and biodiesel blends

Some suppliers offer heating oil blended with biofuel. In the EIA description, these blends are generally about 5% biofuel by volume. Renewable heating oil is similar to renewable diesel and meets ASTM D396, but availability is not universal. Confirm the specific product with the supplier and check that the heating equipment is compatible before using a blend.

Other renewable heat pathways

A 2021 report from the IEA, the International Renewable Energy Agency and REN21 identifies other possible routes: renewable electricity, renewable-based gases such as green hydrogen, sustainable bioenergy, direct solar heat and geothermal heat. These options differ in availability and practicality, and the report does not make them a universal fit for individual homes.

How widespread is oil use in the United States?

Oil remains the dominant energy source for U.S. transportation. The EIA reports that petroleum products supplied about 89% of U.S. transportation energy in 2025, while biofuels supplied about 6%.

Home heating oil use is much more geographically concentrated. In winter 2023–2024, about 4.79 million U.S. households used heating oil as their primary heating fuel, and about 82% of those households were in the Northeast, according to the EIA.

How to compare replacement options

Compare practical fit before assuming one technology will be cheaper or cleaner everywhere. The relevant questions differ for vehicles and homes:
