An Amazon.com gift card can pay for eligible goods and services on Amazon.com and certain related sites, but it is not cash or a universal payment card. It cannot pay a third-party retailer through Amazon Pay. In the United States and US territories, gift-card balance can also cover eligible Prime Video add-on subscriptions under specific conditions.
What can an Amazon.com gift card buy?
For Amazon.com, gift-card balance can be applied to eligible goods and services sold on the site. Physical products such as books and kitchen goods are examples of the kinds of products shoppers can find there; eligibility is determined by Amazon’s terms and the item’s checkout, not by category alone. Check the payment options before placing an order if a listing or service has special rules.

Amazon describes gift-card balance as usable for eligible goods and services on Amazon.com and certain related sites. The current Amazon.com Gift Card Terms and Conditions govern what is eligible. Marketplace-specific terms matter: guidance for Amazon.com should not be assumed to apply to another country’s Amazon store.
Where can’t you use the balance?
Third-party websites using Amazon Pay
An Amazon Pay button on another retailer’s website does not make an Amazon.com gift card an accepted payment method there. Amazon Pay says Amazon.com Gift Cards cannot be used for third-party Amazon Pay orders. The gift-card balance is for eligible Amazon.com purchases and certain related sites, not checkout across the wider web. See Amazon Pay’s accepted payment methods.

Cash, other gift cards, and transfers for value
Amazon’s US gift-card terms restrict redeeming the balance for cash, using it to buy other gift cards or prepaid open-loop cards, and transferring it for value. The terms also restrict use at Amazon-affiliated properties outside the United States. Consult the live terms for the exact current wording and the rules that apply to your marketplace.
Can you pay for Prime Video add-on subscriptions?
Amazon says customers in the United States and US territories can use gift-card balance to pay for eligible Prime Video add-on subscriptions. The option appears during signup. If the balance does not cover a billing period, remaining balance can carry forward and be used against later charges. This is a specific service exception, not a guarantee that every Amazon subscription or recurring charge accepts gift cards. Free trials require a backup card
For an eligible Prime or Prime Video add-on free trial, Amazon requires a credit or debit card as backup. Paying with gift cards alone does not qualify for the trial.
How to check whether a purchase will work
- Confirm the marketplace. Make sure you are shopping on Amazon.com if you are relying on the US-facing guidance here; other country stores may have different terms.
- Check the checkout payment options. Add the item or service to your cart and review the available payment methods before placing the order. Amazon’s terms and checkout determine eligibility.
- Distinguish Amazon checkout from Amazon Pay. If you are on a separate retailer’s website, Amazon Pay will not let you use an Amazon.com gift-card balance for that order.
- For a recurring Prime Video add-on, review the signup terms. Check whether the gift-balance option is offered and, if you want a free trial, have an eligible credit or debit card available as backup.
Protect your gift-card claim code
Do not give a gift-card claim code to someone who asks you to pay a third-party merchant or settle a bill. Amazon Pay says it does not invoice customers for payment by Amazon gift card and warns about claim-code requests by phone, text, or email. See Amazon Pay’s guidance on internet scams and phishing.
