What Can I Do With a Master’s Degree in Psychology?

A psychology master’s can lead to specialized workplace, school, and counseling careers, but the degree alone does not confer a license or qualify you for every role.

A master’s degree in psychology can lead to work in industrial-organizational psychology, qualifying school psychology, counseling after the required specialized training and licensure, and a range of adjacent fields. The degree title alone does not qualify you for every job: employers and state licensing or education rules may require specific coursework, supervised experience, exams, or a specialized degree.

Master’s-level career paths

Industrial-organizational psychologist

This is a direct master’s-level psychologist pathway: the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) says industrial-organizational psychologists typically need a master’s degree. Programs commonly cover statistics, research design, and workplace relationships. In the job, you may apply psychological research to employee selection and retention, training, or workplace morale. The degree should prepare you for this specialty; a general psychology master’s is not necessarily equivalent to an industrial-organizational program. BLS occupational overview of psychologists.

School psychologist

BLS says school psychologists typically need at least a master’s degree in school psychology, often including an internship. State education-board credentialing is also typical. This is a specialized route: a general psychology master’s does not automatically meet the education and credential requirements for school psychology. Check the rules of the state where you plan to work and the requirements of the relevant education agency. BLS occupational overview of psychologists.

Mental health counselor

A psychology master’s may be a starting point for counseling work, but it does not by itself authorize independent practice. Mental health counselors typically need a master’s degree and an internship, and BLS says all states require them to be licensed. The required program, supervised practice, exams, and license depend on state rules; confirm that a particular program meets the requirements where you intend to practice. Substance-use and behavioral-disorder counseling

Some roles focus on substance use or behavioral disorders rather than the broader mental health counselor pathway. Entry requirements vary by state, employer, and position, so check the specific job’s required education and credentials. The BLS occupational category combines substance abuse, behavioral disorder, and mental health counselors; its wage and growth figures should not be treated as outcomes guaranteed by a psychology master’s degree. Other careers that may use psychology training

Psychology knowledge and research skills can also be relevant to human resources, employee training, research coordination, social services, education, and management. These are possibilities to investigate, not jobs automatically unlocked by the degree. The employer’s posting determines required education and experience, and some roles—such as social work or teaching—may require a separate credential or degree.

BLS’s 2023 field-of-degree data show psychology degree holders working in occupations including managers, social workers, psychologists, counselors, teachers, and others. That describes degree holders broadly, not master’s graduates alone, and the occupations have different entry requirements. BLS data on psychology degree holders.

How the main options compare

Role Typical education Additional requirements to check Work focus National wage and projected growth
Industrial-organizational psychologist Typically a master’s degree, according to BLS. Specialty-relevant coursework and employer requirements; the BLS overview describes typical education, not a guarantee that any psychology master’s qualifies. Workplace research and issues such as hiring, retention, training, and morale. May 2025 median annual wage: $193,950. Projected employment growth: 6% from 2025 to 2035.
School psychologist Typically at least a master’s degree in school psychology, often with an internship. State education-board credentialing; confirm the program and internship meet local rules. Psychological services in school settings. May 2025 median annual wage: $95,990. Projected employment growth: 1% from 2025 to 2035.
Clinical or counseling psychologist Typically a Ph.D. or Psy.D. State psychologist licensure for independent practice; requirements vary by jurisdiction. Psychological services within the role’s scope and setting. May 2025 median annual wage: $100,580. Projected employment growth: 12% from 2025 to 2035.
Substance abuse, behavioral disorder, and mental health counselor Typically a master’s degree and internship for mental health counselors. All states require mental health counselors to be licensed; check state-specific program, supervised-practice, and exam requirements. Other counselor roles may have different rules. Counseling focused on mental health, substance use, or behavioral disorders, depending on the role. May 2025 median annual wage: $59,350. Projected employment growth: 18% from 2025 to 2035.

Wage figures are BLS national occupation medians for May 2025, and growth figures are BLS projections for 2025–35. They describe occupations, not starting pay or the expected financial return from a particular degree. They are not directly comparable measures of the value of a master’s: the occupations have different credential requirements, duties, settings, and labor markets. What a psychology master’s does not automatically qualify you to do

A master’s degree in psychology does not automatically make you a licensed psychologist or authorize independent diagnosis or therapy. BLS says clinical and counseling psychologists typically need a Ph.D. or Psy.D.; it also notes that, in most states, practicing psychology or using the title “psychologist” requires licensure. Independent psychologist practice requires licensure in every state and the District of Columbia. State rules govern the protected title and scope of practice, so check the relevant licensing board rather than relying on the degree name. BLS occupational overview of psychologists.

How to choose a program for the job you want

  1. Name the target job and location. Requirements depend on the occupation and jurisdiction. Start with the state licensing board or education agency if the job is regulated.
  2. Match the program to the credential. Compare the program’s specialty, coursework, and any applicable accreditation requirements with the regulator’s rules and actual job postings.
  3. Verify supervised experience and exams. Ask the program and licensing authority what internship, supervised hours, examinations, and application steps are required, and whether the program satisfies them.
  4. Check the work, not just the degree title. Review local job postings for duties, setting, experience, and required credentials. Compare local wages with the national BLS occupation figures rather than assuming a national median is your likely salary.
  5. Confirm before enrolling. Get confirmation from the relevant licensing board or education agency, and ask prospective employers whether graduates of the program meet their requirements.

What psychology degree-holder earnings can—and cannot—tell you

BLS, using U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey data, reported a $60,000 median annual wage for employed psychology degree holders in 2023; 51% of employed psychology degree holders had an advanced degree that year. These figures cover degree holders broadly, not a group limited to master’s graduates. They do not isolate the effect of a master’s degree or predict what a new graduate will earn.
