President Joe Biden’s April 16, 2024 post argued that women in sports were not being paid fairly, but it did not mention Caitlin Clark. The connection was timing: Clark’s reported rookie WNBA base salary of $76,535 had become a public talking point. That was her 2024 base pay, not a complete measure of her possible income—and it is a historical figure, not her current salary.
What did Biden say, and did he name Caitlin Clark?
On April 16, 2024, Biden posted: “Women in sports continue to push new boundaries and inspire us all. But right now we’re seeing that even if you’re the best, women are not paid their fair share. It’s time that we give our daughters the same opportunities as our sons and ensure women are paid what they deserve.” The archived post was recorded at 4:58 p.m. Read the archived post.
The message addressed women in sports broadly. It did not name Clark or refer specifically to the WNBA. News coverage connected the post to the salary discussion because it appeared as Clark’s first-year pay attracted attention.
How much was Caitlin Clark paid as a WNBA rookie?
Clark, selected first overall by the Indiana Fever in the 2024 WNBA Draft, was reported to have a 2024 base salary of $76,535. Her four-year contract was reported as worth $338,056. These were contemporaneously reported contract figures, not a calculation of everything she might earn from basketball-related opportunities. The Los Angeles Times’ 2024 report and CBS News’ 2024 report provide the figures.

The Los Angeles Times reported that the WNBA said Clark could earn $500,000 or more in WNBA earnings that season when marketing agreements and performance bonuses were included. That was a conditional estimate, not guaranteed base salary. Endorsement income is another category and should not be added to her WNBA salary.

Why does WNBA pay differ from NBA pay?
Comparing Clark’s rookie salary with an NBA rookie’s pay can illustrate that the leagues operated on very different salary scales. It does not, by itself, establish a like-for-like gender pay comparison or explain the cause of the difference. The leagues have different business economics and media-rights arrangements, and player compensation is set through separate collective bargaining agreements.

The WNBA describes its collective bargaining agreement (CBA) as the contract between the league and the WNBA Players Association that sets employment terms, player rights and obligations, salary caps, and benefits. The league’s FAQ says its prior agreement remained in effect through the 2025 season after the union exercised an early termination option. WNBA CBA FAQ.
Revenue is also relevant context, but a precise revenue-share comparison should not be inferred without comparable figures and a sourced calculation. The Associated Press reported in 2025 that the WNBA had not publicly released its revenue figures at that time. AP reporting.

What changed under the WNBA’s 2026–2032 CBA?
The WNBA announced a new seven-year CBA covering 2026 through 2032. In its March 20, 2026 release, the league described a revenue-sharing system and projected more than $1 billion in player salaries and benefits over the agreement. It listed a 2026 salary cap of $7 million, a maximum salary of $1.4 million, an average salary of $583,000, and minimum salaries ranging from $270,000 to $300,000 depending on service. The league projected that the maximum would exceed $2.4 million and the average would exceed $1 million by 2032. These are league-published terms and projections, not independently established outcomes. WNBA announcement.
The league reported that players ratified the terms on March 23, 2026, the Board of Governors ratified them on March 24, and the completed long-form agreement was signed on May 22. The WNBA also said existing rookie-scale contracts would be adjusted upward. Its cited releases do not state Clark’s individual salary under the new agreement, so leaguewide figures cannot be used to calculate her personal 2026 pay. WNBA signing update.
