Investing in quantum-computing companies carries significant technology, commercialization, financing, customer-demand and forecast risk. A company can make technical progress without producing a scalable system, winning repeat commercial business or becoming profitable. Before comparing stocks, look beyond headline qubit counts and company targets: examine roadmap execution, how technical results were measured, the source and durability of revenue, reported losses and cash-flow needs.
Why quantum-computing stocks carry unusual uncertainty
Quantum-computing businesses must solve difficult engineering problems and then turn technical advances into products or services customers will pay for at scale. Success at one stage does not guarantee success at the next. A prototype, cloud-access offering or promising laboratory measurement is not proof of broad customer demand or a profitable business.
Company filings provide useful evidence of what an issuer says could go wrong, but they are not independent validation of its technology or a forecast of investment returns. The examples below focus on public pure-play companies IonQ and Rigetti; their disclosures should not be treated as a description of every company, architecture or financial position in the sector.
Technology, roadmap and scaling risk
A company may miss or delay targets for qubit count, fidelity, error correction, system integration or other technical milestones. Even if it reaches a target, the resulting system may not be sufficiently reliable, useful or economical for commercial workloads. IonQ’s 2025 Form 10-K says the company had not produced a scalable quantum computer and warns that research milestones could take longer than expected or never occur. Rigetti’s 2025 Form 10-K describes prior roadmap changes and missed or at-risk milestones and says it remains in the technology-development phase.

Roadmaps are plans, not evidence that milestones will be achieved on schedule. When reviewing one, compare announced targets with demonstrated results and note changes in dates, definitions or scope. A higher qubit count alone does not establish that a system can solve useful problems: performance also depends on factors such as error rates, connectivity, system design and the ability to scale and control the hardware.
Technical metrics may not be comparable
Headline performance figures can be difficult to compare when companies use different test conditions, methods or definitions. Rigetti’s 2025 Form 10-K reports internal-testing fidelity figures for its 84-qubit and 36-qubit systems and cautions investors not to place undue reliance on the fidelity measures presented. Those are issuer-reported measurements, not independently verified comparisons.

Check what was measured, under what conditions, and whether the figure reflects internal testing or an independent assessment. A single metric does not by itself establish quantum advantage, performance on a customer’s workload or commercial value.
Commercial adoption and profitability are not assured
Technical progress does not ensure that customers will buy systems, use cloud services repeatedly or spend enough to cover research, manufacturing, sales and operating costs. Development contracts and research access can support a business while differing from recurring demand for commercial products.
IonQ’s 2026 first-quarter Form 10-Q discusses the difficulty of generating revenue sufficient for profitability and the importance of further system development and commercialization. Rigetti’s 2025 Form 10-K says it has not yet formed a scalable business model and may never become profitable. These issuer statements describe risks, not certain outcomes.
Losses and future financing can affect shareholders
Both companies reported substantial losses and accumulated deficits for 2025, but the figures use different accounting measures and should not be treated as directly comparable:
Rank #4
| Company | Reported 2025 loss | Accumulated deficit at Dec. 31, 2025 | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| IonQ | $633.7 million loss from operations | $1,194.1 million | IonQ 2025 Form 10-K |
| Rigetti | $216.2 million net loss; $201.0 million net loss in 2024 | $771.0 million | Rigetti 2025 Form 10-K |
IonQ’s figure is loss from operations; Rigetti’s is net loss. Neither figure is cash burn or a measure of how long a company can operate before raising money. To assess financial resilience, read current cash-flow statements alongside cash and equivalents, expected spending, debt, contractual commitments and financing activity.
Rigetti says it needs substantial cash for research and operations and may need additional capital sooner than planned; it warns that difficulty raising funds could force cuts or delays to development. If a company raises equity, existing shareholders may be diluted. The disclosures cited here do not establish that either a specific future issuance, amount or timing is certain.

Revenue mix and customer concentration matter
Revenue totals alone can hide dependence on a limited number of customers or contract types. Rigetti says the substantial majority of its current revenue comes from development contracts and identifies public-sector customer concentration as a risk. This is a company-specific disclosure, not a sector-wide rule.
For each company, examine how much revenue comes from system sales, cloud access, development work or research awards; whether customers return or expand usage; and how much revenue depends on a small number of counterparties or government funding. A contract can provide valuable support for development without demonstrating broad, repeat commercial demand.
Forecasts, market estimates and stock-price expectations can disappoint
Forward-looking statements depend on assumptions and estimates that may prove wrong. Rigetti’s 2025 Form 10-K says: “our goals and objectives are aspirational and are not guarantees or promises that such goals and objectives will be met.” Treat targets, revenue expectations and market-size estimates as uncertain rather than achieved results.
A share price can reflect expectations about future growth well before current revenue or profitability supports them. The figures discussed here do not establish whether any company is overvalued or what return its stock may deliver; those questions require current market prices, valuation assumptions and an investor’s own assessment of risk.

- Technology and execution: Identify the architecture, stated milestones, demonstrated progress, roadmap revisions and basis for reported technical measurements. Ask how laboratory results translate into larger, useful systems.
- Commercialization: Separate paying customer activity from research demonstrations. Look for repeat usage, system sales, cloud-service demand and evidence that customers receive enough value to keep spending.
- Financial resilience: Review losses, operating cash flow, cash and equivalents, expected spending, debt and contractual obligations. Do not infer runway from an income-statement loss alone.
- Revenue and customer concentration: Check the share of revenue tied to public-sector work, development contracts or a small number of customers, along with contract duration and renewal risk.
- Forecast and valuation risk: Distinguish achieved results from company targets, then evaluate valuation separately using current information. A technical milestone does not by itself justify a particular stock price.
These comparisons need current filings and consistent reporting periods. The cited 2025 annual reports describe results for the year ended December 31, 2025; financial conditions and company disclosures can change quickly.
