In India, a slowdown can hurt an NBFC stock through rising borrower defaults, tighter or more expensive funding, weaker margins and lower investor valuations. How exposed a particular company is depends on its loans, funding, capital, controls and the price investors are paying—not on the NBFC label alone.
How a slowdown can affect an NBFC and its stock
A weaker economy can reduce households’ and businesses’ ability to repay, slow demand for new loans and increase concern about lenders’ future earnings. A market sell-off is a related but distinct risk: investors may become less willing to fund financial companies or pay the same valuation for their shares, even before a lender reports higher defaults.
These effects can reinforce one another. Higher expected credit losses may weaken earnings; more cautious funders can make refinancing harder or costlier; and lower expected earnings can weigh on the share price. The scale and timing depend on the individual lender. Sector averages cannot establish what will happen to one company.
Credit losses: borrower stress reaches the lender
When borrowers have less capacity to repay, delinquencies, restructurings and defaults may rise. Provisions for expected losses reduce current earnings; write-offs and unrecovered loans can further weaken the lender’s financial position. Reported gross non-performing assets (GNPAs) may not show the earliest signs of stress, so collection trends and early delinquencies matter too.

Unsecured lending and exposure to cyclical sectors such as real estate and construction are among the areas identified for attention in company reports. That does not mean every unsecured loan will default or that every NBFC has the same exposure. Loan underwriting, borrower mix, geography, collateral and recovery capability all affect the outcome.
CP Capital Limited’s Annual Report 2024-25, attributing its sector overview to ICRA and KPMG, cited unsecured lending’s share rising from 7% in 2021 to 11% in March 2024. These are dated sector figures, not a current estimate or a measure of any particular NBFC’s portfolio.
Funding access and liquidity are connected, but different
NBFCs use external funding to support lending. If lenders and capital-market investors become more risk-averse, refinancing may be less available or more expensive. A reliance on a narrow set of funding sources can leave a company more exposed to a change in market conditions.

Liquidity risk is about having cash available when obligations come due; it is not the same as insolvency. A lender can hold valuable loans but still struggle to meet near-term payments if cash inflows or refinancing do not arrive on time. The Reserve Bank of India’s liquidity guidance tells NBFCs to assess cash-flow and maturity mismatches under different assumptions. It also cautions that assets commonly treated as liquid, including government securities and money-market instruments, can become illiquid when market participants move in one direction. This guidance explains the risk mechanism; it is not a newly issued rule.

This is a dated observation about a segment of the sector, not a finding about every NBFC.
Higher funding costs and slower growth can squeeze profits
If borrowing costs rise faster than a lender can adjust loan yields, its net interest margin can narrow. Slower loan growth may reduce operating leverage, competition can limit pricing power, and rising expected credit losses can increase provisions. Together, these pressures can reduce profitability even if the company continues operating.
CP Capital Limited’s Annual Report 2024-25 attributed to ICRA and KPMG projections of a 20–40 basis-point increase in NBFC sector cost of funds and a 25–45 basis-point decline in sector profitability for FY25, excluding housing and infrastructure financiers. These were projections for that period—not realised outcomes, current estimates or RBI forecasts—and should not be treated as a forecast for an individual company.
Regulatory, execution and governance risks
Regulatory requirements and operational-risk expectations can affect compliance work, systems and costs. The RBI’s 2024-25 annual report describes work affecting NBFCs, including harmonisation of housing finance company and NBFC rules and operational-risk and resilience guidance. Paisalo Digital’s Annual Report 2024-25 comments that tighter oversight may raise compliance costs or reduce operational flexibility, particularly for smaller firms; that is company management commentary, not a quantified estimate for the sector.
A slowdown can make weak underwriting, risk controls or governance more consequential, but the sources do not quantify a general slowdown-related increase in compliance costs. A company’s disclosures and control practices need to be assessed on their own merits.

Share-price risk is not the same as business failure
An NBFC can remain solvent while its stock falls if investors lower their earnings expectations or are no longer willing to pay the same valuation. Conversely, a falling share price alone does not show that a lender is insolvent. These are market mechanisms, not a price forecast: the cited sources do not establish a current target, fair-value range or expected decline for any NBFC stock.
Valuation depends on the company’s current share price and relevant financial measures, compared with its outlook and peers. A sound lender can still be an expensive stock; assessing that question requires current market data and company filings.

The National Stock Exchange of India’s January 2026 Market Pulse reported system-level NBFC capital-to-risk-weighted-assets ratio (CRAR) of 24.9% in September 2025. It reported GNPAs of about 2.8% for NBFC Middle Layer entities in September 2025, with category differences: 2.4% for industry, 2.5% for retail, 5.6% for agriculture and 5.8% for services.

These are dated aggregate indicators, not assurances about a chosen lender’s capital, loan book or ability to absorb losses. The same Market Pulse reported that bank credit growth had moderated to around 11% year over year in September 2025 from 19.2% in March 2024. Those figures concern bank credit, not NBFC credit growth.
How to assess a specific NBFC before investing
Use the company’s latest filings and disclosures to examine the dimensions below. Sector-wide figures can provide context, but they cannot substitute for issuer-level analysis.
| Area | What to examine | Why it matters in a slowdown |
|---|---|---|
| Loan and borrower mix | Secured and unsecured shares; retail, MSME, vehicle, housing, infrastructure and other sector exposures; borrower and geographic concentration | Different borrowers and collateral can respond differently to weaker activity. |
| Asset quality | Early delinquencies and collections alongside GNPA/NNPA, provisions, write-offs, restructurings and recoveries | Early repayment stress can emerge before headline NPA measures fully reflect losses. |
| Funding and liquidity | Funding-source concentration, refinancing schedule, maturity ladder, liquid assets and cash-flow mismatches | Near-term obligations can become difficult to meet if funding or cash inflows are delayed. |
| Capital | The company’s own capital adequacy and capacity to absorb losses | A system-level CRAR does not show the buffer at an individual lender. |
| Profitability | Cost of funds, lending yields, margins, operating costs and credit provisions | Higher funding costs and losses can weaken earnings. |
| Governance and regulation | Risk controls, disclosures, compliance capability, related-party matters and underwriting practices | Weak execution or controls can make a downturn more damaging. |
| Valuation | Current share price and comparable earnings or book-value measures, using dated market data and filings | Operating resilience does not establish whether the stock is attractively priced. |
Neither the sector statistics above nor the cited annual-report commentary identifies which NBFC is best positioned or fairly valued. That requires selecting a company and reviewing its current disclosures and market valuation; this evidence does not support a stock-specific recommendation.
