Each play produces a random outcome; a machine is not due to pay out, and past results do not improve the next play’s odds. Pokies are not poker tables, and “video poker” is a different game category.
What does “pokies” mean?
“Pokies” is the common Australian term for poker machines, also called gaming machines or EGMs. They are computer-based gambling devices. Despite the word “poker,” they do not mean an ordinary poker table or necessarily involve poker skills. Video poker, by contrast, is an electronic version of a card game and should not be treated as synonymous with pokies. The Australian Institute of Family Studies (AIFS) explains how electronic gaming machines work.
How does a spin work?
A machine uses a computer program and random process to determine each play’s outcome. GambleAware NSW says each spin is independent: the result of an earlier spin does not determine the next one. As the NSW Government site puts it, “Each spin is a fresh start and there’s no way to predict or influence the outcome.”
That means a machine is not “due” after a run of losses, and a recent win does not make another win more likely. Timing, lucky charms and tracking previous results cannot predict or influence the outcome. GambleAware NSW gives the example of a typical $5,000 prize on a $1 machine having odds of 9,700,000 to 1. That is the NSW page’s example, not a probability that applies to every machine or game. Read its explanation at GambleAware NSW: Poker Machines (Pokies).

What does return to player (RTP) mean?
Return to player, or RTP, is a long-run measure of how much of the money bet a game returns across many plays. It does not promise that an individual player will get that percentage back during a visit or session. A minimum RTP describes the game’s expected return over its long-run cycle, not a personal payout target.
GambleAware NSW describes gaming machines as returning 85–92% of all money bet over their lifetime. Treat that as the NSW source’s description, not as a guarantee for a particular player or a rule that applies identically across Australia. Machine rules and settings vary by jurisdiction.

Why can pokies be difficult to keep track of?
Machine features can encourage continued play and make it harder to notice how much time or money has been spent. AIFS discusses audiovisual cues, game mathematics, and price and prize structures. GambleAware NSW also identifies features such as rapid betting, credits, bonus features, near misses and “losses disguised as wins.” These are design and risk factors; they do not mean every player will respond in the same way.
The scale of risk is reflected in a 2022 Australian Gambling Research Centre survey: 81.9% of the 1,016 Australian adults surveyed who gambled at least fortnightly on pokies were classified as at risk of gambling harm. This describes that surveyed group of regular pokies gamblers, not all Australians or everyone who has ever played. The survey summary is available from the Australian Gambling Research Centre.

Who regulates pokies in Australia?
State and territory governments regulate land-based gambling, including poker machines. Rules, machine settings and RTP requirements should not be assumed to be identical nationwide. The Australian Department of Social Services distinguishes land-based gambling regulation from online gambling regulation in its information about online gambling regulation. For a specific venue or legal question, check the current regulator in the relevant state or territory.
