In the United States, the Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA) reviews animal care, visitor and staff safety, facilities, governance, and other operations through document review, an on-site inspection, and a commission decision. Its standards are one accreditation system; they should not be treated as universal requirements for every animal park or accreditor.
What does animal-park accreditation mean?
Accreditation is a standards-based review of an institution. It is not a visitor rating, a single-animal health certificate, or a promise that the facility will never have a safety incident. AZA describes its process as a broad evaluation of whether a zoo or aquarium meets professional standards across its operations.

The distinction matters because a visible accreditation logo is evidence of an institutional review, not a guarantee about every encounter or outcome. It tells visitors that the organization has been assessed under the accreditor’s framework and has received a decision from that program. What the signal covers depends on that specific accreditor and its standards.
That makes accreditation most useful as context, rather than as a shortcut for judging every aspect of a visit. It can tell you that a facility has undergone a defined evaluation, but it is not a public score that lets you compare an individual exhibit, animal, or experience with another. A different accreditor may assess different areas, use a different decision process, or require review on a different schedule.

What does AZA accreditation evaluate?
AZA’s review extends beyond animal exhibits. Its stated evaluation areas include animal care and veterinary programs, conservation and research, education, safety and security, facilities, guest services, staff, finances, governing authority, and support organizations. The review is intended to examine how the institution operates as a whole.
This breadth is one reason accreditation should not be confused with a single inspection of animal health or a review of the visitor experience alone. The review considers the systems and people that support an institution, including its facilities, staff, governance, and animal-care work. A visitor may see only a small part of those operations during a visit; the accreditation process draws on records, interviews, and inspection as well as what is visible to guests.
Animal welfare and care
AZA says its accreditation review considers animals’ living environments, social groupings, health, and nutrition, as well as enrichment. It also states that every animal at an accredited institution receives a thorough welfare assessment at least once a year. These are descriptions of review practices and institutional expectations; they are not proof that any individual animal is always thriving or that welfare outcomes are identical across facilities.
AZA also describes approved Animal Care Manuals as compilations of care and management information drawn from scientific literature and institutional knowledge reviewed by experts. Its manual page says accredited institutions must have completed and approved manuals for species in their collections and make them available to animal-care staff. This illustrates the professional resources used in care; it does not give visitors a separate welfare rating for an animal or exhibit.
The annual assessment is an institutional practice, not a promise that an animal’s condition is fixed or that all welfare questions can be answered by a visitor’s brief observation. Environments, social groupings, health, nutrition, and enrichment are among the areas AZA says it examines. The practical takeaway is that welfare is part of the formal review, while a claim about a particular animal’s current experience would require evidence beyond the accreditation label.
Safety, facilities, and operations
AZA identifies safety as a core principle of accredited zoo and aquarium operations. In its September 29, 2021 article, “Are Zoos and Aquariums Safe?”, AZA quoted its accreditation standards: “One of the three core principles upon which AZA-accredited zoos and aquariums operate is safety. Facilities must be properly maintained, infrastructure sound, proper practices in place, staff aware and trained, and a culture of safety inherent throughout the institution. All reasonable concerns regarding the welfare of individual animals or groups, visitors, and staff must be thoroughly assessed and corrected.”

That language describes expectations for maintenance, infrastructure, practices, staff training, and responding to reasonable concerns. It does not mean ordinary risks disappear, nor does it establish that accredited facilities have no accidents. The available AZA materials describe requirements and a review process, not a measured reduction in incidents or a comparative safety-outcome rate.
In other words, accreditation is a signal that safety is included in the framework and that the institution is evaluated against related standards. It is not a guarantee that a visitor can disregard posted instructions, barriers, or staff directions. Nor do AZA’s available materials establish an incident rate that would support claims that one accredited institution is safer than another.
How does the AZA accreditation process work?
AZA describes a sequence that combines institutional records, an on-site assessment, and review by its Accreditation Commission. The visiting committee’s inspection lasts several days, rather than being a brief visitor-facing check.
- Application and records: The applicant submits a detailed questionnaire and supporting materials, including policies, procedures, records, lists, and reports. AZA reviews the application before the inspection.
- On-site inspection: A visiting committee of experts spends several days at the institution. It visits areas, interviews staff, checks records, and assesses the animal collection.
- Inspection report: The visiting team prepares a report for the Accreditation Commission.
- Commission consideration: The Commission considers the application and inspection materials. AZA says it may also consider outside comments and other information.
- Decision: The Commission reaches a decision after a hearing with senior institutional officials. Outcomes can include accreditation, provisional accreditation for currently accredited applicants, a tabled application for a new applicant, or denial.
A tabled application for a new applicant is a distinct possible outcome; it should not be confused with a grant of accreditation. Likewise, provisional accreditation is an outcome AZA identifies for currently accredited applicants, not a general label for every institution under review.
The steps matter because accreditation is not simply self-reported compliance or a logo applied for by an institution. AZA describes an application review, a multi-day visit by a team of experts, a report, and a Commission decision that may take outside comments and other information into account. Even so, the existence of a formal process should not be stretched into claims about outcomes that AZA’s materials do not measure, such as a specific reduction in accidents.
Does accreditation mean a zoo is safe?
No accreditation can reasonably be read as a guarantee of zero risk. AZA’s standards make safety part of the evaluation, including facility maintenance, sound infrastructure, proper practices, trained and aware staff, an institutional safety culture, and assessment and correction of reasonable concerns involving animals, visitors, or staff.

For a visitor, the useful inference is narrower: the institution has been reviewed against the accreditor’s stated safety and operational standards. Accreditation does not establish that every exhibit, activity, or visitor interaction is risk-free, and the AZA materials do not supply a statistic showing how accreditation changes the likelihood of an incident.
It also does not answer every facility-specific question a guest might have. The standards describe what AZA expects institutions to address, while accreditation status signals a review against those standards. The AZA materials do not support interpreting the status as a promise that a particular attraction has no hazards or as a guarantee that an incident will never occur.
Does accreditation guarantee good animal welfare?
No. Accreditation is meaningful evidence that animal welfare is included in a formal review, but it is not an unconditional guarantee of a perfect welfare outcome for every animal. AZA says it examines environments, social groupings, health, nutrition, and enrichment and that each animal at an accredited institution receives a thorough welfare assessment at least annually.
Those practices show that welfare is addressed across the standards rather than treated only as a visitor amenity. They should not be mistaken for a public, continuously updated score of an individual animal’s condition. Accreditation indicates evaluation against a framework; it does not remove the need to distinguish the stated process from any claim about a particular animal’s current experience.
How is AZA accreditation different from federal licensing?
AZA’s FAQ distinguishes its accreditation from baseline federal licensing. AZA says animal exhibitors open to the public must be licensed by USDA/APHIS and provide basic care under the Animal Welfare Act, while AZA accreditation evaluates institutions against broader professional standards. This is AZA’s description of the distinction; it does not mean that every licensed exhibitor is AZA-accredited.
AZA says approximately 10% of nearly 2,150 USDA-licensed animal exhibitors are AZA-accredited. This is an approximate figure reported in AZA’s undated public accreditation overview/FAQ, not an independently recalculated current count. It illustrates that AZA accreditation is a specific program rather than a label covering every animal exhibitor.

The two labels therefore should not be treated as interchangeable. In AZA’s account, licensing is a baseline requirement for exhibitors open to the public, while its own accreditation applies a broader professional standards review. That distinction is useful when checking a facility’s claims: ask which program or accreditor the claim refers to, rather than assuming the word “accredited” means AZA accreditation.

Use AZA’s current accredited-facility list rather than relying only on a logo image or an old article. AZA says its accreditation logo may appear on an institution’s website, advertisements, and at its entrances, and it recommends consulting the current list. Because status can change, the live listing is the better check when confirming a particular facility.
For a meaningful comparison between facilities, check the same three things: which areas the accreditor evaluates, how it makes the decision, and how often the institution must repeat the review. Accreditation identifies whether an institution meets a program’s standards; the materials do not provide a basis for ranking accredited facilities against one another.
When comparing two facilities, keep the accreditor in view as well as the status. A useful comparison is not merely “accredited” versus “not accredited”: establish whether the same accrediting system is involved, what that system evaluates, how the decision is reached, and how frequently a full review is repeated. The available information supports comparing those process features, not assigning a quality ranking to facilities that hold the same status.
How often do zoos have to renew accreditation?
AZA says accredited institutions repeat the entire accreditation process every five years. It also says its standards evolve. Its accreditation materials page lists the 2026 Accreditation Standards and Related Policies, the 2026 Guide to Accreditation, and the 2026 Accreditation Questionnaire. Those materials are specific to AZA’s program and current published cycle; other accreditors may use different standards or renewal schedules.

A renewal schedule from AZA should not be assumed to apply to every accreditor or animal park.

What visitors can reasonably take away
- AZA accreditation is a broad institutional evaluation, not a visitor review or a certificate for one animal.
- Animal welfare and safety are both within AZA’s stated scope, alongside veterinary care, facilities, education, conservation, and governance.
- The process involves an application, a multi-day expert inspection, and a decision by the Accreditation Commission.
- Accreditation is a meaningful signal of evaluation, but it does not guarantee perfect welfare, eliminate risks, or prove an incident-free record.
- Verify a facility’s current status through AZA’s accredited-facility list, and do not assume AZA’s standards apply to every animal park or accreditor.
Frequently Asked Questions

Is AZA accreditation the same as USDA/APHIS licensing?
No. AZA’s FAQ describes USDA/APHIS licensing as a baseline requirement for public animal exhibitors and says AZA accreditation evaluates institutions against broader professional standards. Not every licensed exhibitor is AZA-accredited.
The Bottom Line
AZA accreditation is a meaningful, repeatable review of an institution’s animal care, safety, facilities, and wider operations. Treat it as evidence that a facility has been assessed against AZA’s standards—not as a guarantee of perfect welfare or zero visitor risk—and verify current status through AZA’s accredited-facility list.
