An A+ insurer financial strength rating is a rating agency’s opinion of an insurer’s ability to meet its obligations to policyholders. The symbol is meaningful only when you know which agency assigned it: on A.M. Best’s scale, A+ means “Superior,” but A+ symbols on different agencies’ scales are not interchangeable. It is an assessment of financial strength—not a guarantee that claims will be paid or a judgment that a policy is right for you.
What A+ means on A.M. Best’s scale
A.M. Best’s Financial Strength Rating assesses an insurer’s financial strength and ability to meet ongoing insurance policy and contract obligations. A.M. Best places A+ in its “Superior” category, meaning the agency considers the insurer to have a superior ability to meet those obligations. A.M. Best’s rating symbols and definitions describe the category; the rating applies to the agency’s assessment, not to the merits of an individual policy.
In forming ratings, A.M. Best considers balance sheet strength, operating performance, and business profile, using quantitative and qualitative analysis. Its process draws on financial statements and other information, analyst work, ongoing monitoring, and rating committee decisions. A.M. Best’s Rating Service Definitions explain that ratings are forward-looking opinions subject to monitoring and surveillance.
Why the agency matters
“A+” is not a universal insurance grade. Rating agencies define their own symbols and categories. For example, S&P’s insurer financial strength scale describes the A category as having strong financial security characteristics; that is S&P’s meaning, not A.M. Best’s “Superior” category. Do not compare two insurers by matching the letter alone. Confirm the agency, the full rating, and any applicable outlook or status using that agency’s current information. An issuer filing can illustrate how ratings are reported, but it is not a substitute for the rating agency’s own current scale. RGA’s 2025 annual report, for example, describes ratings using agency-specific definitions.
What the rating tells you—and what it does not
A strong financial strength rating can be one useful input when you consider whether an insurer appears financially positioned to meet its policy obligations. It is not a prediction that a specific claim will be accepted, nor does it tell you whether a particular event is covered.

- It does not rate the policy details or service experience. The rating does not tell you whether coverage, exclusions, limits, deductibles, price, or customer service suit your needs.
Because ratings are forward-looking opinions, they may change, be suspended, or be withdrawn. Check the current rating and its status rather than treating a past rating as permanent. A.M. Best’s definitions describe its monitoring and rating actions.
How to use an A+ rating when comparing insurers
- Identify the agency. Find out whether the rating is from A.M. Best, S&P, or another agency, then read that agency’s own definition rather than assuming the letter means the same thing across scales.
- Verify the exact insurer. Check the legal insurance company named in the policy—not just the brand or parent company—and confirm that the rating applies to that company.
- Check current status. Look up the latest published rating and any stated outlook or status with the rating agency. Ratings can change, be suspended, or be withdrawn.
- Assess the policy separately. Compare covered risks, exclusions, limits, deductibles, premiums, and service against your needs. The insurer-level financial strength rating does not answer those questions.
How to read the rating statement
A.M. Best defines its rating as “A Best’s Credit Rating is a forward-looking independent opinion regarding an insurer’s, issuer’s or financial obligation’s relative creditworthiness, which is subject to ongoing monitoring and surveillance.” A.M. Best Rating Services, Inc. This wording captures why a rating can inform a decision without guaranteeing a particular future outcome.
