Alaska Airlines’ headline-making 2014 story combined a record financial year for its parent company, Alaska Air Group, with two consecutive years at the top of a U.S. airline scorecard and a seven-year customer-satisfaction streak. It did not establish two consecutive passenger-volume records, and the onboard features described at the time should not be read as a promise about every flight or today’s service.
What records did Alaska Airlines break?
The records reported in January 2015 were primarily financial records for Alaska Air Group, the airline’s parent company—not passenger-count records for Alaska Airlines. For fiscal 2014, the group reported adjusted net income of $571 million and an adjusted pretax margin of 17.2%, both described as records. It also reported a record $116 million in employee incentive pay for the year. Alaska Air Group’s January 22, 2015 earnings release and its 2014 Form 10-K distinguish the parent company’s financial results from the airline’s service claims.
Alaska Air Group said it carried 29 million passengers in 2014. That figure provides context for the scale of operations, but the cited sources do not call it a passenger-volume record. So the “two consecutive records” wording is not supported if it is meant to describe two consecutive years of record passenger numbers.
Which consecutive airline rankings were reported?
J.D. Power customer satisfaction, 2008–2014
Alaska Airlines said it ranked highest in customer satisfaction among traditional network carriers for seven consecutive years, from 2008 through 2014, according to J.D. Power. This is a specific category and period, not a claim that Alaska was ranked best among every airline or that every passenger had the same experience.

The Wall Street Journal’s “Middle Seat” scorecard
The company also said Alaska held the top position in The Wall Street Journal’s U.S. airline “Middle Seat” scorecard for two consecutive years. This was a separate scorecard from J.D. Power’s traditional-network-carrier satisfaction category; the two rankings should not be treated as one award or as interchangeable measures.
Alaska Air Group CEO Brad Tilden said: “Record earnings and the number one airline ranking in The Wall Street Journal for the second year in a row are proof that our 13,000 employees continue to do a great job serving our customers and running a reliable operation,” The statement reflects the CEO’s view of the company’s results and ranking; it is not independent confirmation of service quality.

What did Alaska’s 2014 “best” experience include?
In its period-specific description of Alaska Beyond, the company listed streaming entertainment delivered to passengers’ personal devices, Tom Douglas signature entrées, Recaro seats with power, enhanced space, six-way adjustable headrests, and customer service from flight crews. The January 2015 announcement also described gourmet meals and power at every seat on specified Boeing 737-800, 737-900, and 737-900ER aircraft.
Those details describe the experience Alaska promoted in 2014–2015. They do not establish that every aircraft offered every feature, or that those amenities remain available on current flights. The cited materials also do not establish a universal “best” experience; that phrase is best understood as promotional language tied to the company’s historical claims and rankings.
