Age can affect the price, but so can the death benefit, coverage period, policy type, underwriting route, and optional features. There is no single useful price for everyone: compare quotes for policies with matching terms, then check what the premiums guarantee and whether they remain affordable over time.
How insurers arrive at a premium
An insurer assesses risk and decides whether to issue a policy, what to charge, and sometimes how much coverage to offer. The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) describes that process as underwriting. In practice, the premium is tied to the combination of the applicant, the benefit amount, the period of protection, and the policy’s design—not to one universal rate or a single factor.

The insurer also prices the policy it is offering. The NAIC says investment earnings, claims costs, and other expenses can affect premiums for many policies. That is a reason to understand the policy’s guarantees and illustrations, especially when values or payments can change. It does not mean that every policy’s premium can be repriced at any time: check the contract’s stated premium schedule and guarantees.

A number advertised as an “average” may not describe your age, health information, location, policy type, coverage amount, or options. Applicant information and underwriting
Age is specifically identified by the NAIC as a factor that can affect life insurance cost. Insurers assess applicants individually, and their criteria and processes can differ. Health information may be part of that assessment, but no single health detail determines every applicant’s rate across all insurers.
Traditional underwriting may involve collecting extensive medical information, including records and results from an exam or blood, urine, or saliva testing. The NAIC’s guidance on accelerated underwriting describes a different approach: insurers may use external data and analytics to make decisions faster. An accelerated process may avoid an exam for some applicants, but it does not guarantee that everyone will qualify without one or receive a particular price.
Simplified underwriting generally asks for less detailed health information. The NAIC Buyer’s Guide warns that policies using this approach generally have higher premiums and provide less coverage than policies requiring detailed health information. This is a broad trade-off, not a promise about the price or benefit of any particular product. If avoiding an exam matters to you, ask what information the insurer still reviews and whether it can request additional evidence.

Do not assume every insurer treats tobacco use, occupation, or a particular diagnosis in the same way. The official life-insurance sources cited here do not establish a universal rule for those factors. Check the insurer’s application and policy materials, answer application questions accurately, and ask how the underwriting decision affects the offer before accepting it.
Coverage amount and how long you need it
A larger death benefit buys more coverage, while a longer period of protection keeps the insurance in force for more years. Both choices affect what you are buying and therefore belong in a meaningful price comparison. They should follow the financial need rather than a fixed rule such as “buy a certain multiple of your income.”
The California Department of Insurance’s Life Insurance Guide suggests considering the people who depend on you, their support and education needs, family income, assets, and debts. A practical estimate starts with the obligations the policy is meant to help address and the length of time those obligations are likely to matter. Consider resources that may offset them as well as future needs. The goal is not to maximize the benefit automatically; it is to choose an amount and duration that fit the household’s circumstances and budget.

For example, a household might need protection while children are dependent or while a major debt remains. That does not establish a particular recommended policy term or benefit: those depend on the household’s finances and plans. It does show why two quotes with different coverage periods are not direct price comparisons, even if the quoted death benefits look similar.

Term insurance provides protection for a specified period and generally costs less than permanent insurance in early durations. It usually does not build cash value. Permanent policies are designed for longer-lasting coverage, and cash-value policies have a savings component as well as a death benefit. Their early premiums are generally higher because part of the payment supports cash value in addition to the insurance benefit.
These are different policy designs, not simply two prices for identical coverage. Before comparing a term quote with a permanent-policy quote, identify what each premium pays for, how long the protection is intended to last, and whether the comparison includes cash-value assumptions. The NAIC and California Department of Insurance materials explain these broad distinctions; they do not provide a single price difference applicable to every applicant or policy.

Within permanent insurance, premium behavior can differ. Whole life typically has level premiums. Universal life can allow changes to premiums and the death benefit, so a low initial payment by itself does not show that the policy will remain affordable or perform as expected over time. Read the policy’s guaranteed terms and distinguish them from current or illustrated values.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Features and options that can add cost
Optional benefits can affect the premium, so compare them as part of the policy rather than treating them as incidental details. Two examples identified by the NAIC are return-of-premium term insurance and convertible term insurance.
- Return-of-premium term: These policies tend to cost more because they may refund premiums if the insured outlives the term. Review the contract conditions for any refund rather than assuming every payment is returned in every circumstance.
- Convertible term: Premiums are usually higher to reflect the option to convert the policy. Ask when conversion is available, what rules apply, and what policy the option permits you to obtain.
Renewal provisions also matter when comparing term policies. Check what happens at the end of the initial term, including whether renewal is available and how the premium is determined. A conversion or renewal option is valuable only if its rules fit your needs; the option’s presence alone does not establish that it will be affordable later.

How to compare life insurance quotes fairly
Put each quote on the same basis before deciding that one is cheaper. A lower initial premium may reflect a shorter term, a smaller benefit, a different underwriting path, or fewer options. Use the insurer’s illustration and policy materials to distinguish guaranteed amounts from current assumptions.
| Compare | What to match or verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Death benefit | The same coverage amount | A smaller benefit is not an equivalent bargain. |
| Duration | The same term or intended coverage period | Shorter protection and longer protection are different purchases. |
| Policy design | Term versus permanent, and any cash-value assumptions | Premiums support different features and purposes. |
| Premium schedule | Whether payments are level, guaranteed, or can change | A starting premium alone may not describe future affordability. |
| Underwriting | The information required and whether an exam or records may be requested | Different application paths can involve different processes and trade-offs. |
| Options | Conversion, renewal, return-of-premium, and any riders included | Features can affect price and the policy’s later choices. |
| Availability and rules | The insurer, state, and applicable renewal or conversion terms | Products and rules can vary by jurisdiction and contract. |
For each offer, ask which premium amounts are guaranteed, what can change, and when. If the policy includes non-guaranteed values, examine the guaranteed figures separately from the illustration’s current assumptions. Also consider whether the payment fits your budget beyond the initial period shown. The NAIC Buyer’s Guide emphasizes affordability and notes that premiums for many policies are sensitive to investment earnings, claims costs, and expenses.
When obtaining online information, remember the NAIC’s caution that internet access does not necessarily mean a lower price. An online quote is useful as a starting point, not proof that the policy is less expensive or equivalent. Confirm the details against the insurer’s documents and check that the insurer and product are available in your state.
Geography and what the available guidance can establish
The regulatory materials discussed here are U.S. consumer guidance, including a California state guide. State rules and available products can differ. The sources do not establish a state-by-state pricing ranking or a current national quote benchmark, so a precise estimate requires the applicant’s jurisdiction, insurer, and policy details.
The NAIC’s consumer pages, including “Insurance Topics | Life Insurance” (updated November 14, 2025), “Accelerated Underwriting” (updated April 7, 2026), and “What Type of Life Insurance Is Right for You?” (published October 12, 2026), explain policy types, underwriting, and consumer questions. California’s Life Insurance Guide adds guidance on assessing household needs and comparing term and cash-value insurance. These sources support the factors and trade-offs described above; they do not provide a personal quote.
Quick Recap
A practical decision sequence
- Define the need. List the people or obligations the benefit should protect, the resources that may offset them, and how long the need is expected to last.
- Choose the coverage design to evaluate. Decide whether you are comparing term protection for a limited period or a permanent policy, and identify any cash-value component or options that matter to you.
- Request comparable offers. Use the same benefit amount, duration, policy type, and options when seeking quotes. Tell each insurer the same accurate information.
- Review underwriting and contract terms. Find out whether medical information, records, or an exam may be required. Read the premium schedule, guarantees, renewal terms, and conversion conditions.
- Check sustained affordability. Look beyond the first payment. For flexible-premium or illustrated policies, separate guaranteed values from non-guaranteed assumptions and consider whether the policy still fits if assumptions differ.
- Verify before accepting. Confirm state availability and the final terms in the insurer’s policy documents; a preliminary quote is not a substitute for the issued contract.
