A Strong Sell rating is a negative assessment under a particular analyst’s or platform’s methodology. It is not a standardized forecast or a promise that a stock’s price will fall. To interpret the label, first find out who issued it, how the rating was constructed, and what period or benchmark it refers to.
What does a Strong Sell rating mean?
It means the source considers the security especially unattractive according to its own rating system. The label itself does not tell you why, how large a decline is expected, or how long the view applies. Those details depend on the provider.

For example, Fidelity’s research glossary describes two different product definitions: ValuEngine’s Strong Sell corresponds to a forecast one-year return below -12%, while S&P Capital IQ STARS’ one-star Strong Sell indicates expected underperformance against an applicable benchmark alongside an expected fall in the share price. Fidelity notes different regional benchmarks for Europe and Asia. These are definitions for those products, not industry-wide thresholds. Fidelity’s research glossary

No. A rating communicates an opinion or a classification produced by a methodology; it does not guarantee a future result. The definitions described by the providers explain what the label means within their systems, but do not establish a comparable accuracy rate across services. Do not treat the words Strong Sell as proof that a decline will occur or as a stand-alone reason to buy, sell, or short a security.

Is Strong Sell an analyst’s rating or a consensus?
It can be either, so check the source. An individual analyst’s recommendation reflects that analyst’s view. A consensus combines multiple recommendations according to an aggregator’s rules; it is not necessarily a single analyst’s judgment.
TradingView says its Analyst rating “represents the consensus of broker recommendations for a security” and identifies FactSet as the source of those recommendations. TradingView also offers a separate Technical rating based on technical indicators; that is not the same measure as its Analyst rating. TradingView’s Analyst rating explanation

Do all analysts use the same rating scale?
No. Providers can use different categories, thresholds, inputs, and time periods. Some ratings also compare expected performance with a benchmark, while others describe an expected absolute return. Even familiar labels such as Buy, Hold, and Sell can have provider-specific meanings.

IG’s help page describes TipRanks’ five-category consensus as being based on analyst ratings from the prior three months. Under the rules summarized there, a Strong Sell score is above 4.5 and requires at least three ratings in that period. If there are only one or two ratings, the consensus is normalized to Moderate Sell. These are TipRanks-specific aggregation rules, not universal definitions. IG Help Centre: What is TipRanks?

Fidelity glossary examples
Fidelity’s glossary examples illustrate why the label needs context: ValuEngine uses a forecast one-year return threshold, while S&P Capital IQ STARS describes expected benchmark underperformance and an absolute share-price decline. How to interpret a Strong Sell label
Before drawing a conclusion, identify the parts of the methodology that give the rating meaning:
Best Value
- Issuer: Is this one analyst’s recommendation, a broker’s rating, or an aggregator’s consensus?
- Scale and threshold: What categories exist, and what specific rule places a security in Strong Sell?
- Combination method: If it is a consensus, how many ratings are included, and how are they weighted or normalized?
- Time period: Does the provider specify a forecast horizon or a lookback period for included ratings?
- Comparison: Is the rating about an expected absolute price decline, or underperformance relative to a benchmark?
If the platform does not make these details clear, the label alone cannot answer how severe or time-sensitive the view is. Consult the provider’s methodology rather than assuming that another service uses the same meaning.
