In a June 2024 campaign letter, 16 Nobel Prize-winning economists warned that Donald Trump’s proposed policies could reignite inflation if he returned to office. Their statement was a conditional political-economic forecast—not a measured result, official government estimate, or consensus finding among economists.

What did the economists warn?

The signatories wrote: “There is rightly a worry that Donald Trump will reignite this inflation, with his fiscally irresponsible budgets.” They characterized the budgets as fiscally irresponsible and argued that the proposed approach could worsen inflation and economic instability. The letter offered a qualitative warning, not a quantified forecast of how much prices might rise. Read the economists’ letter.

The letter also stated: “Among the most important determinants of economic success are the rule of law and economic and political certainty.” The signatories connected those conditions, along with stable international relationships, to economic success. Contemporaneous coverage of the letter described its concerns about proposed tax changes, tariffs, immigration enforcement, and reversing some Biden-era initiatives. Those policies should not be treated as having identical inflation effects; the letter did not provide a separate numerical estimate for each.

Who signed the letter?

Sixteen Nobel Prize-winning economists signed it. Joseph E. Stiglitz was among them and was identified in contemporaneous reporting as a leading figure behind the effort. Coverage at the time placed the letter in the 2024 presidential campaign, where it compared the candidates’ economic agendas. The number of signatories is a count, not an inflation statistic.

Could a second Trump term reignite inflation?

The letter’s answer was that it could, if Trump returned to office and enacted policies the signatories considered risky. That is a forecast about a possible policy path, not proof that inflation would rise. The letter did not establish the size, timing, or likelihood of a price increase, nor did it present side-by-side numerical scenarios.

To assess such a warning, readers would need to examine the specific policy mechanism, the assumptions and time horizon behind an estimate, and whether the analysis is a campaign-era prediction or evidence from observed outcomes. The letter provides a political-economic argument, not a complete quantified assessment of each proposal.

What the letter does—and does not—establish

  • It establishes: 16 Nobel Prize-winning economists publicly warned during the 2024 campaign that Trump’s proposed policies could reignite inflation and harm economic stability and U.S. standing.
  • It does not establish: that inflation later rose because of those policies, that the forecast came true, or that all economists agreed with it.
  • It is not: an official estimate from a government agency or a measured outcome.

The materials cited here do not evaluate post-election inflation or economic conditions. Determining what happened after the election requires current official data and later analysis, separate from the signatories’ 2024 warning.
