Air Canada was not next: it had already announced checked-baggage fee changes before WestJet’s April 23, 2026 increase took effect. The rules differ by ticket-purchase date, fare and route, so neither airline has one fee that applies to every traveler.
Which airline changed fees first?
Air Canada announced changes applying to tickets purchased from April 13, 2026, for specified shorter-haul destinations, and from May 14, 2026, for specified longer-haul international itineraries. WestJet’s increase took effect April 23, 2026. The headline question is therefore answered by the timeline: Air Canada’s changes were announced before WestJet’s increase, not afterward. Air Canada’s baggage notice and CityNews’ report from The Canadian Press describe the respective changes.
What WestJet changed
CityNews, reporting from The Canadian Press on WestJet’s April 23, 2026 increase, reported that prepaid fees for the first and second checked bags rose by $5 each; fees for the first and second bags paid at airport check-in rose by $10 each; and excess, overweight and oversized baggage fees rose by $50. The report did not establish one new fee that applies to every route and booking.
WestJet’s stated rationale, as quoted in that report, was “industry revenue trends as well as impacts from current global conditions.” That is the airline’s stated explanation; it does not identify a particular cost as the cause.

WestJet’s domestic tariff is not a quote for every booking
A later WestJet domestic tariff, effective June 18, 2026, gives maximum checked-bag fees in Canadian dollars by fare family. These tariff maximums are not necessarily what every passenger will pay: WestJet says the amount can vary with booking date, payment timing, fare, route and other itinerary details, and some fees may be reduced or waived. WestJet’s baggage information and its tariff terms provide the applicable rules.

The tariff’s ordinary checked-bag weight limit is 23 kg (50 lb); it lists an additional CAD $150 overweight charge. Those figures are from the domestic tariff effective June 18, 2026, and remain subject to its terms. A bag scale can help you check weight before leaving, but it cannot determine the fee for your itinerary or replace checking the airline’s limits and booking details.

- Ticket purchase date: Air Canada’s listed changes use separate April 13 and May 14, 2026 purchase thresholds. WestJet says booking date affects the amount it displays.
- Route: Air Canada’s listed fee groups distinguish shorter-haul destinations from named longer-haul international routes. WestJet’s cited tariff figures are domestic-route maximums.
- Fare family and bag number: The first bag may be included while the second is chargeable, or both may carry fees, depending on the fare.
- When and how you pay: WestJet says eligible travelers can prepay for up to two checked bags through Manage Trips until 24 hours before departure. Its baggage page says payment timing affects the price; check the booking for the amount.
- Benefits or exceptions: WestJet lists baggage exceptions for certain fares, elite-status members and eligible cardholders. Do not assume the base fee applies if you qualify for a benefit.
WestJet’s baggage page also says the bag fee is reflected in its system based on the booking date. The amount displayed for the specific itinerary is more useful than assuming a general fee applies to every passenger. Check WestJet’s baggage rules and review the baggage allowance attached to your reservation.
