WestJet reduced its U.S. flying for the 2026 summer and fall schedule, and a February 9, 2026 report put the number of cut routes at 11. The complete route-by-route list from that report could not be checked against the airline’s own filings, so this article does not reproduce it. What is established is the direction and scale of the reduction, what the different kinds of schedule change mean for a traveler’s booking, and the steps to take if a trip you have already paid for is affected.
What is confirmed
- The February report. A February 9, 2026 article described 11 additional WestJet U.S. route cuts and attributed the pullback broadly to lower Canadian demand for travel between Canada and the United States. The excerpt available for this article did not include the full list.
- The schedule ledger. AeroRoutes, an aviation schedule tracker, published a summary on February 8, 2026 covering planned WestJet U.S. service changes for the summer and fall season through October 24. It lists cancellations, suspensions, earlier end dates and delayed seasonal restarts across many routes, mostly from Canadian origins such as Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Halifax and Winnipeg. This ledger is broader than the 11 routes in the February report, so its entries should not be read as that list.
- The airline’s later position. In a June 12, 2026 update, WestJet said its planned capacity adjustments included about a 4% reduction in September flying and less than a 3% reduction in October. The airline said the changes were meant to align capacity with demand while maintaining operational reliability, and that guests affected by changes would be offered alternate flights.
- Network additions continued. WestJet’s newsroom also announced new service later in 2026, including five winter 2026/2027 routes on July 20 and a winter sun schedule on August 17. The picture is a reshaping of the network, not a withdrawal from U.S. destinations.
What “cut” can mean on a booking
News headlines use “cut” for several different events, and each one affects a traveler differently. The February ledger distinguishes between them, so check which one applies to your flight before deciding what to do.
| Type of change | What it means | What it may mean for your booking |
|---|---|---|
| Seasonal cancellation | The route is not operated for the season listed in the schedule. | A booking on that route for those dates is likely to need rebooking. Whether a refund is offered is not stated in the sources used here. |
| Suspension for a date range | The route is paused for a defined window and then resumes. | Only flights inside the window are affected. Flights before and after the window may be unchanged. |
| Earlier end date | Service runs until an earlier date than originally scheduled. | Flights after the new end date are affected; earlier flights are usually not. |
| Delayed seasonal restart | Service resumes later than originally planned. | Flights between the original and new start dates are affected. |
Because the change type decides which flights are affected, do not assume that a headline about “11 routes” means every booking on a listed city pair is void. Check the exact dates on your own reservation.
Two numbers that measure different things
Two statistics have circulated, and they answer different questions. Neither one counts the 11 routes.

Why WestJet says it is adjusting capacity
The February report linked the U.S. pullback to weaker Canadian demand for cross-border travel. In its June 12, 2026 update, WestJet framed its later capacity changes in operational terms: “These updates better align capacity with demand, while maintaining operational reliability.” That statement describes the reason for the adjustments in general. It does not explain why any individual route was affected.

- Confirm the change on your own booking. Check the flight number, date and times against your confirmation email or the airline’s booking tools, and do not rely on news headlines.
- Identify the change type. Use the table above to decide whether the flight is cancelled, suspended for a window, ending early or delayed in restarting.
- Compare the alternatives in full cost. For each replacement flight, add the fare difference, any extra night of accommodation, changed airport transfers, baggage and seat fees, and the value of lost time. The cheapest-looking option is not always the lowest total cost.
- Ask directly whether a refund is available. WestJet has said affected guests would be offered alternate flights, but the sources used here do not state whether a refund is offered if you decline them. Ask the airline in writing and keep the answer.
- Check your credit card coverage. Some cards include trip cancellation or delay benefits, but the conditions, claim deadlines and eligible causes vary. Read the benefits guide for your specific card before you file a claim.
- Keep records. Save the change notice, screenshots of each option you were offered, receipts for extra expenses and every reply from the airline.
Booking U.S. trips on WestJet in the current schedule
- Check the schedule for your exact dates. The AeroRoutes summary covered planned changes through October 24, 2026. As of October 9, 2026, parts of that window have passed, so confirm the current status of any flight rather than relying on a February or June snapshot.
- Weigh fare flexibility against price. A lower fare with restrictive change rules can cost more if the schedule shifts. Compare the change and refund conditions before you pay for add-ons.
- Book with a buffer when the trip matters. For a connection, a fixed event or a nonrefundable hotel, a longer layover or a different date can reduce the impact of a schedule change.
