He also said WD had long-term agreements (LTAs) with two major customers for calendar 2027 and one for calendar 2028. Those comments describe WD’s production commitments—not proof that hard drives have disappeared from retail shelves.
What Western Digital said about its 2026 and 2027 output
On the Q2 FY2026 earnings call, Tan described WD as “pretty much sold out for calendar ’26.” The qualification matters: he did not say every unit was allocated. He also reported LTAs with two of WD’s top customers for calendar 2027 and one for calendar 2028. Those are counts of customers with agreements, not percentages of the company’s production.
In a September 9, 2026, call, WD gave a later update: the “vast majority of calendar or fiscal year ’27” was under LTA. The company did not state a precise share, and its wording does not identify a single exact 2027 period. It also said some business continued to be quoted and priced over three-, six-, or nine-month periods.
| Period | What WD said | What the statement establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Calendar 2026 | “Pretty much sold out,” per Tan on the January 30, 2026, Q2 FY2026 call. | WD described its production allocation; not every unit is necessarily committed. |
| Calendar 2027 | LTAs with two top customers, reported on the Q2 FY2026 call; by September, the vast majority of calendar or fiscal 2027 was under LTA. | Customer commitments were substantial, but WD did not give an allocation percentage or resolve the calendar/fiscal-year wording. |
| Calendar 2028 | One top customer had an LTA, according to the Q2 FY2026 call. | An agreement existed with one customer; no share of output was stated. |
Does “sold out” mean consumers cannot buy a hard drive?
No. The statements concern WD’s production and customer commitments. They do not establish that consumer hard drives are sold out at retailers, nor do they quantify any effect on retail prices. Retail stock and pricing would need to be checked directly with sellers and current market data; these company comments alone cannot answer whether a particular drive is available or good value.

Why WD asks customers to plan so far ahead
On the September call, WD said it takes 52 weeks to produce a hard disk drive and that most customers are asked to place orders at least 52 weeks ahead. That is a stated production lead time and ordering practice, not a rule applied to every customer. Advance commitments give the manufacturer and customers a longer planning horizon.
WD’s FY2026 annual report says that making higher-capacity drives involves greater manufacturing complexity and longer lead times. Together, those company statements provide context for the planning horizon, but they do not quantify how much any single factor contributed to the agreements. They also do not establish that AI demand alone caused the bookings.

What the capacity roadmap does—and does not—tell buyers
WD’s Innovation Day presentation positions HDDs in capacity-oriented storage tiers and shows a platform combining SSDs and HDDs. It includes ePMR and HAMR roadmap targets such as 40TB, 44TB, 60TB, and 100TB at different points in the roadmap. These are company plans or qualification milestones, not confirmation that all of those capacities are currently shipping or available to purchase.
For a consumer or small-business purchase, the practical questions remain model-specific: current stock, price per terabyte, warranty, interface, form factor, and whether the drive suits the intended backup or NAS use. The production-allocation statements do not identify a recommended model or provide live availability or prices.
