Wendy’s Dynamic-Pricing Plan: What the Surge-Pricing Backlash Was About

Wendy’s 2024 digital-menu announcement sparked fears of peak-time price hikes. The company denied plans for surge pricing, and available sources do not confirm that its proposed test took place.

Wendy’s did not announce that it would charge more for a Frosty at lunchtime. In February 2024, its CEO said the company expected to test dynamic pricing and other digital-menu features as early as 2025. After the plan was widely interpreted as Uber-style peak-demand price hikes, Wendy’s said it would not raise prices when demand was highest. The available sources do not establish whether the announced test later took place.

What did Wendy’s actually announce?

On an investor call in February 2024, CEO Kirk Tanner said Wendy’s expected to begin testing enhanced digital-menu features “as early as 2025.” The proposed features included dynamic pricing, day-part offerings, AI-enabled menu changes and suggestive selling. CBS News reported Tanner’s remarks.

The plan was connected to digital menu boards. Wendy’s announced plans to invest about $20 million in boards for U.S. company-operated restaurants by the end of 2025, and about $10 million over two years for global digital-menu enhancements, according to The Associated Press. Those were planned investments, not confirmation that the installations were completed.

What is the difference between dynamic pricing and surge pricing?

Dynamic pricing is a broad term for adjusting prices or offers over time or in response to conditions. Surge pricing is a specific version: raising prices when demand is highest. A menu that changes by time of day could also show different offers, including discounts during slower periods; dynamic pricing does not necessarily mean every price goes up at busy times.

Wendy’s told the AP: “Wendy’s will not implement surge pricing, which is the practice of raising prices when demand is highest. We didn’t use that phrase, nor do we plan to implement that practice.” The company said digital boards could make it easier to change offerings throughout the day and provide discounts or value offers, particularly during slower periods. The AP published both clarifications on February 28, 2024.

Why did the announcement get a frosty reception?

The phrase “dynamic pricing” was quickly associated with surge pricing: paying more at peak times, as consumers may encounter with ride-hailing services. That interpretation raised an immediate concern for restaurant customers—whether a popular meal or a Frosty would cost more at lunch or dinner. Reports described public criticism after the announcement was presented as a possible move toward peak-time price increases. The Washington Post and Axios covered the reaction.

“Frosty reception” captures that backlash with a reference to Wendy’s frozen dessert; it is not a measured survey result. The key distinction is that Wendy’s denied plans for demand-based price hikes while describing slower-period discounts as one possible use for its digital menus.

Did Wendy’s ever start surge pricing?

The sources available do not verify that Wendy’s implemented the proposed dynamic-pricing test or report its results. Wendy’s 2025 Investor Day materials discuss technology and digital menus as part of its customer-experience strategy, but they do not establish that a test occurred. The company’s Investor Relations events and presentations page provides the relevant investor materials.

So the documented story is an announced plan, a public interpretation of that plan as possible surge pricing, and Wendy’s subsequent denial that it intended to raise prices at peak demand. Whether any restaurant later tested other forms of time-based pricing or offers is not established by these sources.
