Wells Fargo discharged more than a dozen employees in its wealth- and investment-management unit in May 2024 after reviewing allegations that simulated keyboard activity created the impression of active work, Bloomberg reported. The public disclosures do not establish that every employee used a mouse jiggler, where the activity occurred, or how the bank detected it.
What happened at Wells Fargo
Bloomberg reported on June 13, 2024, that Wells Fargo fired more than a dozen employees the previous month. The employees were in the bank’s wealth- and investment-management unit. FINRA BrokerCheck disclosures list May 6, 2024, discharge dates and describe allegations involving simulated keyboard activity intended to create the impression of active work. Bloomberg’s report and the FINRA BrokerCheck records provide the public account.
“More than a dozen” is Bloomberg’s reported aggregate count. The FINRA records substantiate individual employment-separation disclosures, but do not by themselves establish a complete count of all affected employees.
What “mouse movers” means in this story
“Mouse mover” and “mouse jiggler” are shorthand used in coverage of the incident, not verified descriptions of a specific device used by every employee. The formal FINRA language refers to allegations of simulated keyboard activity. CBS News also reported that it was unclear whether the employees used mouse movers. CBS News’ account distinguishes that uncertainty from the broader allegation.

How did Wells Fargo catch them?
The public sources reviewed do not explain how Wells Fargo detected the alleged activity, what monitoring tools it used, or what evidence supported each discharge. They do not establish that the bank relied on USB devices, mouse-movement logs, software, screenshots, or any other specific detection method. The employment disclosures record the stated basis for separations; they are not a technical account of the investigation.
Where did the activity take place?
The reports do not establish whether the employees were working from home or from an office. The case therefore does not, on the available evidence, demonstrate a particular remote-work or return-to-office scenario.

What Wells Fargo and workplace commentators said
A Wells Fargo spokesperson told Bloomberg: “Wells Fargo holds employees to the highest standards and does not tolerate unethical behavior.” That is the company’s statement, not an independent finding about each employee’s conduct.
Axios placed the story in a wider discussion about productivity measurement and workplace surveillance. It quoted leadership adviser Brian Elliott describing activity-based evaluation as “a weaker form of management.” That is commentary on management practice, not evidence about the employees’ work or the bank’s reasons for its individual decisions. Axios’ coverage provides that context.
