Wedding Costs: Who Traditionally Pays for What—and How Couples Split Costs Today

Traditional U.S. etiquette assigns many ceremony and reception costs to the bride’s family and the rehearsal dinner, officiant, and honeymoon to the groom’s side. Today, couples and families can set a different split based on confirmed contributions and clear expectations.

In traditional U.S. bride-and-groom etiquette, the bride’s family generally covered the ceremony, reception, invitations, attire, flowers, and photography; the groom or his family generally covered the rehearsal dinner, officiant, marriage license, and honeymoon. These customs are a historical starting point, not a present-day obligation: couples and families can agree on a different split based on what each is willing and able to contribute.

What does the traditional wedding payment split look like?

Traditional etiquette divides expenses between the bride’s family and the groom or his family. The lists below summarize common allocations in U.S. etiquette guidance, not a universal ledger. Details differ by source and local custom.

Expense Common traditional payer Examples and qualifications
Ceremony and reception Bride and/or her family Ceremony venue and vendors, reception services, and related professional services.
Stationery, attire, flowers, and photography Bride and/or her family Invitations and other stationery, the bride’s gown and accessories, flowers and decor, and photography or video.
Rehearsal dinner and officiant Groom and/or his family Often includes the rehearsal dinner and the officiant’s fee or donation.
Marriage license and honeymoon Groom and/or his family Commonly assigned to the groom’s side in traditional lists.
Groom’s attire and attendant-related items Groom and/or his family Customary lists may assign the groom’s attire and some items related to his attendants to his side.
Wedding rings Often split between the families or couple Traditionally, the bride or her family may pay for the groom’s ring, while the groom or his family pays for the bride’s engagement and wedding rings. Specific accounts differ.
Wedding-party clothing and travel Each attendant Attendants have traditionally paid their own apparel and travel costs.
Showers and other prewedding events The event’s host The host generally pays for the event; traditional hosts may include attendants or family members.

Some assignments vary even within traditional guidance. For example, the bride’s bouquet may be charged to either family depending on custom, while reception music and alcohol may be treated as separate categories. Agree on the actual bills rather than assuming every etiquette list uses the same categories.

Who pays for a wedding today?

There is no single modern split. The couple may pay for the wedding themselves, one or both families may contribute, or costs may be shared in another way. A Knot-reported figure says parents paid 52% of the budget—38% from the respondent’s family and 14% from the partner’s family—and the couple paid 47%. The study year is not stated in the cited passage, so treat those as that source’s reported result, not a current universal estimate. Emily Post says up to 70% of weddings are paid for by the couple themselves or by some combination that may include the couple and both sets of parents; the cited passage gives no year or study method. These figures use different definitions or methods and should not be combined as if directly comparable.

The practical rule is to build the budget from contributions people have confirmed, not from an etiquette rule or a national figure. Emily Post’s wedding-expenses guidance describes a spending plan as a way to facilitate traditions rather than turn them into a burden: Emily Post: Wedding Expenses.

How can couples agree on a fair budget?

  1. Ask before setting the total. Talk with each likely contributor about what they are willing and able to pay. Do this before committing to a venue or other major expenses.
  2. Record contributions and assignments. Write down who is paying, which specific costs the contribution covers, and when the money will be available. Base the working budget on confirmed amounts.
  3. Discuss decision-making alongside payment. Agree in advance on how much input contributors will have over choices they fund. Emily Post’s guidance says the wedding belongs to the couple, while the couple should respect agreed financial limits.
  4. Include the whole family picture. Bring in parents, stepparents, grandparents, or other likely contributors as relevant. Divorced or remarried parents and different family circumstances may call for a plan tailored to the people involved.
  5. Set boundaries if a contribution comes with expectations. Decide whether the amount and any attached input work for you. If not, adjust the plans or decline the contribution rather than relying on an unclear agreement.

What should wedding attendants expect to pay?

Traditional etiquette commonly expects attendants to pay for their own clothing and travel, but that can become a substantial commitment. If you are asking someone to participate, tell them early about expected costs, including clothing, travel, lodging, and prewedding events. Give them room to decide whether the financial commitment works for them; do not assume everyone can afford the same expenses.

How much should tradition determine the split?

These customary assignments come from U.S./Western etiquette framed around a bride and groom. They are not universal across cultures, religions, or family structures. The Knot explicitly describes its traditional breakdown as heteronormative, and Vogue notes that family backgrounds vary and that arrangements can be more fluid for same-sex and non-binary couples. Lizzie Post of the Emily Post Institute has connected the historical bride’s-family payment role to the practice of a dowry, rather than presenting it as a timeless financial obligation. For a different family or cultural context, the people involved should decide what fits them instead of treating this traditional split as a rule.
