It is registered with the SEC and is a FINRA and SIPC member, but regulation does not guarantee investment returns or protect against market losses. Webull’s brand covers separate services and entities, so check which company provides the product you use and what protections apply.
Webull’s SEC-filed corporate disclosure also recounts historical FINRA allegations concerning options account approvals from December 2019 through July 2021. That history is relevant to a broker review, but it should not be mistaken for a current finding about every account.
What Webull is
Webull is an online brokerage aimed primarily at self-directed investors. Its platform offers U.S.-listed stocks, exchange-traded funds, options, margin accounts, fractional shares for some eligible securities, extended-hours trading, paper trading, market data, and charting tools. Availability can vary by account type, security, and jurisdiction.
Self-directed securities trading is offered by Webull Financial LLC. Webull identifies Webull Advisors LLC as the provider of advisory accounts and Webull Pay LLC as the provider of cryptocurrency trading. Futures services are also described separately in Webull’s disclosures. Do not assume every product bearing the Webull name is provided by the same legal entity or has the same protections.
#1 Best Overall
- As a day trader, you can live and work anywhere in the world. You can decide when to work and when not to work.
- You only answer to yourself. That is the life of the successful day trader. Many people aspire to it, but very few succeed. Day trading is not gambling or an online poker game.
- To be successful at day trading you need the right tools and you need to be motivated, to work hard, and to persevere.
Webull is not a bank or a government investment program, and it does not guarantee investment returns. Its self-directed brokerage is a platform for people who choose their own investments.
Is Webull regulated?
Yes. Webull says Webull Financial LLC is registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and is a member of the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) and the Securities Investor Protection Corporation (SIPC). Readers can verify a firm’s current status through regulator records, including FINRA BrokerCheck.
Regulatory status is evidence that the firm is a regulated brokerage; it does not mean:
- your stocks will rise;
- your options strategy cannot lose more than expected;
- the app will never experience an outage;
- every trade will fill at the displayed price; or
- Webull cannot restrict or close an account under its agreement or legal obligations.
A real, regulated broker can still have poor service, technical problems, compliance issues, or products that are unsuitable for a particular investor. Registration is not a guarantee of safety or returns.
Webull’s options approval history
Webull’s SEC-filed corporate disclosure recounts FINRA allegations about Webull Financial’s options approval process during December 2019 through July 2021. According to the filing’s description of the allegations, FINRA said the firm did not exercise reasonable due diligence before approving some customers, and that flaws in its electronic approval system and inadequate supervision resulted in options authority for some customers who did not meet eligibility criteria or whose account records had red flags.
This is historical compliance context as described in the filing, not a claim that every current Webull account or options approval is affected. It is still a reason to take options approval and suitability seriously. Options can be complex and can result in substantial losses; read the current options disclosures before trading.
What happens if Webull fails?
Webull states that eligible securities accounts at Webull Financial LLC have SIPC protection up to $500,000, including a $250,000 cash sublimit (Webull, accessed 2026), subject to SIPC rules and account-capacity calculations. SIPC protection generally addresses eligible customer property missing when a member brokerage fails; it does not reimburse investment losses if a security falls in value.
Webull’s disclosures say futures accounts are not protected by SIPC. Cryptocurrency trading is provided by Webull Pay LLC, separate from Webull Financial LLC; do not assume brokerage SIPC protections apply to crypto or other services. Webull also describes excess SIPC coverage with terms that depend on the clearing arrangement and policy conditions. Check the current account-specific disclosure rather than treating any excess coverage as a universal individual guarantee.

If you buy a stock at $100 and it falls to $40, SIPC does not reimburse the $60 loss. It also does not protect against normal market volatility, unsuitable trades, or a company whose shares become worthless.
Webull may offer a cash-sweep program for eligible uninvested cash. Any bank insurance depends on the program, participating banks, ownership category, and applicable terms. Do not assume every dollar displayed as cash is automatically covered; read the current account and cash-sweep disclosures.
Webull fees: what “commission-free” does and does not mean
Webull advertises $0 commissions on eligible U.S.-listed stock, ETF, and options trades. Its disclosures also list other possible fees and charges, including options contract fees on certain products, regulatory fees, margin interest, outgoing wire fees, and optional Webull Premium service fees. Fees and eligibility can change; check the current schedule for the product and account you plan to use.
| Cost area | What to check |
|---|---|
| Stocks and ETFs | Advertised commissions may be $0 for eligible trades, but regulatory or other charges may apply. |
| Options | Check for contract fees on applicable products and any exchange or regulatory charges. |
| Margin | Borrowed money creates interest costs. Rates and terms depend on the account and balance. |
| Wire transfers | Outgoing wire transfers may carry fees. |
| Optional services | Check whether optional services such as Webull Premium have a fee. |
| Other charges | Review the current detailed fee schedule for the specific trade, account, or service. |
There is another cost that is easy to miss: bid-ask spread. A stock can show a $20.00 bid and a $20.05 ask. Buying at the ask and selling at the bid creates a $0.05 spread before the price moves. Less-liquid stocks, extended-hours trades, and options can have wider spreads.

Payment for order flow and execution quality
Webull, like many U.S. commission-free brokers, may receive payment for order flow (PFOF) or other compensation for routing eligible orders to market makers. This is not evidence that Webull is fraudulent, but it is a potential conflict of interest for investors to understand.
The broker still has best-execution obligations. “$0 commission” does not necessarily mean all-in execution is identical across brokers. Limit orders can help control the worst acceptable price, although a limit order may not fill at all.
How to place a basic stock trade
Webull’s labels can change between app versions, but the usual workflow is:
- Open the Webull app and sign in.
- Use the search field to find the ticker symbol.
- Open the correct stock or ETF page and confirm the company, exchange, and price.
- Tap Trade or Buy.
- Choose the account, order type, quantity, and time-in-force.
- Review the estimated cost, buying power, and any warning about extended hours or fractional shares.
- Submit the order and check the order-status screen rather than assuming it filled.
A market order seeks execution at the best available price but does not guarantee the quote visible when you tapped submit. A limit order lets you set the highest purchase price or lowest sale price, but it can remain unfilled.
Rank #3
Extended-hours trading is not ordinary trading
Webull offers premarket and after-hours trading for eligible securities, with hours and eligibility determined by current platform rules. Extended-hours sessions generally have lower liquidity, wider spreads, and more volatile price movements. News released outside regular market hours can move a stock sharply before many investors can trade.
Use a limit order where available and confirm the session selected before submitting. A market order that might be acceptable during regular hours can be especially risky when only a small number of shares are available.
Options and margin are the biggest risk areas
Webull’s tools make it relatively easy to access options and margin. That convenience should not be mistaken for simplicity.
- Buying an option: the premium can fall to zero before expiration.
- Selling uncovered options: losses can be very large and, for some strategies, theoretically unlimited.
- Margin: Webull can require additional collateral or liquidate positions under its margin agreement. It may do so without waiting for a convenient time or asking you to choose which position to sell.
- Options assignment: an investor who sells an option can be assigned before expiration, creating a stock position or obligation they did not expect.
Read the options approval disclosures and margin agreement. If you do not understand terms such as maintenance requirement, liquidation value, early assignment, or buying-power reduction, a cash account may be more appropriate than enabling margin just to unlock features.

Fractional trading can make a high-priced stock accessible with a small dollar amount, but fractional orders do not always have the same functionality as whole-share orders. They may be restricted to market orders, unavailable during extended hours, ineligible for transfer to another broker, or handled on a schedule different from whole-share trades.
Webull does not provide every security type. Availability may exclude certain OTC securities, mutual funds, bonds, GICs, non-U.S. listings, halted securities, or thinly traded products. Search for the ticker and read the instrument details before depositing money for a trade you may not be able to place.
Why some users think Webull is a scam
Withdrawals can take time
ACH deposits and withdrawals are not instant in every situation. A deposit may need to clear before it can be withdrawn, and a stock sale must settle before the proceeds are fully withdrawable. A bank-account mismatch, returned ACH, identity review, or recent account change can add delays.
For a normal withdrawal, open the funding or transfers area, select the Webull account and linked bank account, enter the amount, and review the estimated delivery date. If the app shows buying power but not withdrawable cash, the difference may relate to settlement, an unsettled deposit, margin requirements, or an account restriction.

Account reviews and restrictions
A brokerage may pause deposits, withdrawals, or trading while it verifies identity, investigates unusual activity, responds to a bank return, or meets regulatory requirements. Webull’s customer agreement may also allow restrictions or account closure in specified circumstances.
That can be frustrating, especially when support cannot disclose every detail of a fraud-prevention or compliance review. It is not, by itself, proof that the broker stole the money. Keep records of deposits, trade confirmations, statements, and support case numbers. If the account is closed, ask how eligible assets or cash will be transferred and whether any positions must be liquidated.
App outages and delayed quotes
Trading apps can display delayed data, lose connectivity, or experience an outage during a volatile session. Never assume tapping “Buy” or “Sell” means an order was accepted. Check the order-status page and confirmation. If an order is duplicated, do not immediately place another one without checking whether the first is pending.
Security and account protection
Use a unique password, enable two-factor authentication, keep your email account secure, and avoid signing in through links in unsolicited messages. Webull will not need your password or one-time authentication code to “unlock” an account through a random social-media message.
If you suspect unauthorized activity:
- Change your Webull password and the password for the linked email account.
- Use the official Webull app or type the website address yourself to contact support.
- Review open orders, recent trades, linked bank accounts, and device sessions.
- Contact your bank if an unauthorized ACH or wire is involved.
- Save statements, screenshots, timestamps, and support correspondence.
Brokerage protection programs are conditional. They can depend on prompt reporting, reasonable account security, and the absence of deliberate or negligent credential sharing. Read Webull’s current account-security and unauthorized-transaction terms rather than treating any “guarantee” as unlimited insurance.
Who Webull is best for
Webull can suit an investor who wants:
- a mobile and desktop trading platform with advanced charts;
- commission-free access to eligible U.S.-listed stocks, ETFs, and options;
- paper trading before using real money;
- extended-hours access;
- options tools and strategy displays; or
- the ability to manage a self-directed account without an in-person adviser.
It may be a poor fit if you need mutual funds, a broad bond or GIC marketplace, human financial planning, simple retirement guidance, or a platform designed mainly for automated long-term investing. Frequent options traders should compare contract fees, execution quality, margin rates, assignment handling, and platform reliability—not just advertised commissions.

Is money in Webull FDIC-insured?
Not automatically. Webull states that eligible securities accounts at Webull Financial LLC are subject to SIPC limits, while any bank cash-sweep coverage depends on the specific program and terms. Check which program holds your cash and its current disclosures.
Does Webull charge commissions?
Webull advertises $0 commissions on eligible U.S.-listed stock, ETF, and options trades, but other charges may apply, including options contract fees on certain products, regulatory fees, margin interest, outgoing wire fees, and optional service fees.
Are Webull futures accounts covered by SIPC?
No. Webull’s disclosures state that futures accounts are not protected by SIPC. Do not apply securities-account protections to futures or other services without checking the relevant account terms.
What was the issue with Webull options approvals?
Webull’s SEC-filed corporate disclosure recounts FINRA allegations about options approvals during December 2019 through July 2021, including alleged due-diligence, system, and supervision deficiencies. Treat this as historical allegations described in the filing, not as a current finding about every account.
What should I do if a Webull withdrawal is pending?
Check whether the deposit has cleared, sale proceeds have settled, the linked bank account matches your identity, and the account has a restriction. Contact support through the official app and retain the case number and transaction records.
The Bottom Line
Webull Financial LLC is a regulated brokerage, not a scam. Its disclosures describe SEC registration and FINRA and SIPC membership, but SIPC protection is limited, does not cover market losses, and does not apply to Webull futures accounts. The review should also take into account the historical FINRA options-approval allegations recounted in Webull’s SEC-filed disclosure.
Webull may suit self-directed investors who value charts, market data, paper trading, and flexible trading sessions. It may be less suitable for someone seeking uncomplicated retirement investing, a full range of traditional investments, or hands-off financial planning. Check current fees and account protections, secure the account, and understand options and margin risks before committing significant money.
