You can earn money online by selling a service or goods, renting out an asset, or doing platform-mediated local work. The right route depends on what you already have—skills, items, equipment, or available time—and on how quickly you need a paying customer. None guarantees income, and the work may have tax and recordkeeping obligations.

Four practical routes for earning online

The IRS uses “gig work” for certain income-earning activity arranged through an app or website. Its examples offer a useful starting point: providing services, selling goods, renting assets, and doing local work through a platform. These are categories, not promises of earnings or a complete list of every possible online business.

Route What you do What to assess first
Sell a service Offer creative, professional, temporary, on-demand, or freelance work to customers. Whether you can clearly describe the service, find likely customers, and deliver the work with the time and skills you have.
Sell goods Sell items online, including goods you make or already own. What you can sell, how you will handle fulfillment, and any costs involved in preparing and delivering an order.
Rent an asset Make property or equipment available to others for rent. Whether you have an asset you can rent, what its use will involve, and whether local rules or platform requirements apply.
Do platform-mediated local work Use an app or website to find driving, delivery, errands, or other on-demand local work. Whether the work is available where you live and whether you meet the platform’s current eligibility requirements.

The IRS lists these kinds of activities as examples of gig work; it does not establish how much a person can earn from them. Platform terms, availability, and eligibility can differ by location and change over time, so check the current official terms before investing time or money.

How to choose a route that fits

Compare the options against your own circumstances rather than relying on claims that one is universally best. A route that uses an asset or skill you already have may be more feasible than one that requires a new investment, but it still needs customers and may involve ongoing costs.

  • What do you already have? Consider relevant skills, goods, property or equipment, and the time you can commit.
  • How soon do you need a customer or payment? The time to a first customer or payment depends on the offer, demand, and any platform or customer onboarding. Do not assume that signing up means work or money will arrive.
  • What will it cost to start and continue? Account for expenses needed to deliver the service, sell or fulfill goods, rent an asset, or do local work. Compare those costs with actual receipts rather than headline income.
  • Are you selling hours, or building something reusable? Direct services and local work generally involve doing work for each engagement. Selling goods or developing a product may have different demands, but neither should be treated as effortless or guaranteed income.
  • How dependent are you on a platform or audience? If one company or a single source of customers controls access to your work, consider how changes to its terms or demand could affect you.
  • Are there location, age, or eligibility limits? Confirm the requirements for your location and circumstances with the relevant platform or local authority.

Keep records and understand U.S. tax obligations

In the United States, gig income is taxable and must be reported even when the work is temporary or part-time, no information return is issued, or payment comes in cash, goods, property, or virtual currency. IRS guidance accessed in 2026 says a return is required when net earnings from self-employment are $400 or more. That is a U.S. filing threshold—not a tax-free allowance, an earnings target, or a rule for other countries. Independent contractors may also need to pay estimated taxes; check IRS guidance for the applicable tax year and your situation.

Keep records of income, receipts, and expenses so you can track what the work brought in and what it cost. A spreadsheet, bookkeeping method, or paper ledger can all serve as recordkeeping tools; the IRS recommendation is to keep records, not to use a particular product or format. Tax rules differ outside the United States, so check the relevant tax authority where you live.

Recognize offers designed to take your money

No online method can guarantee earnings. FTC attorney Rhonda Perkins puts it plainly: “there’s no such thing as a guaranteed way to make money.” Treat promises of large or certain income, pressure to join immediately, and testimonials that cannot be verified as warning signs.

Be especially wary of simple online task offers that show supposed earnings and then demand a deposit to unlock or withdraw them. The FTC says legitimate employers will not require you to pay to get paid or to get a job. Do not send money to recover earnings shown in an app or message.
