To conserve water at home, first check your bill for changes in gallons used, then look for leaks before paying to replace fixtures. WaterSense-labeled products can reduce water use while meeting performance criteria, but actual savings depend on your home and local rates. Rebates are offered locally, so confirm eligibility with your water provider before buying.
How much water does a household use each day?
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says the average American family uses more than 300 gallons of water at home per day, with roughly 70 percent used indoors. This is national context, not a target or a personalized benchmark: household size, climate, landscape, and habits affect use. The EPA notes that residential use per person can be higher in arid parts of the West, in part because of landscape irrigation. EPA: How We Use Water
Bathrooms account for more than half of indoor household water use, according to the EPA. Outdoor use is more than 30 percent of household use on average nationally and can reach 60 percent in arid regions. Those estimates help identify where to investigate, but your home’s actual mix may differ. EPA: About WaterSense EPA: Statistics and Facts
How do I understand the water cost on my bill?
Look at the volume used as well as the amount due. A bill can rise because of a rate change, sewer charges, fixed fees, seasonal pricing, or higher consumption; the dollar total alone does not tell you which occurred. Compare the gallons or CCF billed with the same month a year earlier, then review the rate structure and any separate water and sewer charges. The EPA recommends checking usage, not just the balance due. EPA: How We Use Water

How can I tell if my home has a water leak?
Start with visible checks and your bill. Drips, puddles, damp spots, or moisture around fixture and appliance connections can point to a leak. A substantial increase in consumption compared with the same month the previous year is another clue.
Check for a leaking toilet
- Put a few drops of food coloring in the toilet tank without flushing.
- Wait 10 minutes. If color appears in the bowl, the toilet is leaking.
- If the test indicates a leak, inspect the flapper and replace it with a part compatible with your toilet if needed.
This dye test can reveal a silent leak that is not obvious during a visual inspection. EPA: Home Maintenance

Use the water meter when the home is idle
- Make sure no water is being used in the home, then note the meter reading.
- Wait two hours without using water and read the meter again.
- A changed reading suggests water is flowing somewhere; investigate or contact a plumbing professional if the source is not apparent.
The meter check is a screening step, not a diagnosis of concealed plumbing problems. EPA also offers guidance on leak-detection and flow-monitoring devices, which can alert users to unexpected moisture or unusual flow patterns. EPA: Leak Detection and Flow Monitoring Devices

For a family of four with no outdoor water use in winter, the EPA says more than 12,000 gallons (16 CCF) per month likely indicates a serious leak. Treat this as screening guidance for that specific household and condition, not a universal threshold for every family or climate. EPA: Home Maintenance
Which changes can save the most water?
The best place to act depends on where your water goes. Because bathrooms account for more than half of indoor use, leaking toilets and inefficient fixtures are worth checking. If your home has an irrigated yard, outdoor use may also be a significant opportunity, particularly in a dry climate. Fix leaks before estimating the benefit of an upgrade: EPA estimates household leaks can waste 180 gallons per week, or 9,400 gallons per year, though the actual amount in a particular home will vary. Consider WaterSense-labeled fixtures
WaterSense-labeled products are independently certified to use at least 20 percent less water than regular models while performing as well as or better. The label applies to eligible product categories including toilets, showerheads, and bathroom faucet aerators. Check that the exact model carries the label; savings figures are estimates, not guarantees for an individual household. EPA: About WaterSense
For a WaterSense-labeled showerhead, the EPA estimates an average family can save 2,700 gallons and more than $75 in water and energy costs per year. The EPA page, last updated November 20, 2025, says these showerheads use no more than 2.0 gallons per minute, compared with 2.5 gallons per minute for a standard showerhead. Actual savings depend on local water and hot-water energy rates, the showerhead being replaced, and how often and how long people shower. EPA: Shower Better
The EPA estimates that replacing all old, inefficient toilets in a home with WaterSense-labeled models can save an average family 13,000 gallons and $130 in water costs annually. It also estimates that upgrading a home’s main bathroom with a labeled showerhead, toilet, and faucet aerator can pay for itself in as little as one year. These are estimates, not assured savings or payback periods; local costs and the fixtures already in place matter. EPA: Statistics and Facts

Match outdoor changes to your yard
If your home uses an automatic irrigation system controlled by a clock-based controller, a WaterSense-labeled irrigation controller may help adjust watering to conditions. EPA estimates these controllers can reduce an average home’s irrigation use by up to 30 percent, or up to 15,000 gallons annually. The results depend on the existing controls, schedule, weather, soil, plants, and system condition; this option is not relevant to homes without automatic irrigation. EPA: Statistics and Facts
If you hire irrigation help, EPA recommends choosing a professional certified by a WaterSense-labeled program. Confirm the certification and local availability rather than assuming a particular provider participates. EPA: Statistics and Facts
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Will a low-flow showerhead lower my bill?
It can, especially if it replaces a higher-flow showerhead and reduces hot-water use, but the amount depends on household shower habits and local water, sewer, and energy charges. The EPA’s estimate for a WaterSense-labeled model is 2,700 gallons and more than $75 in combined water and energy costs per year for an average family; it is not a guaranteed bill reduction. Check the exact model’s WaterSense label and compare its cost, installation needs, and any eligible local rebate with your expected use. EPA: Shower Better

How do I find water-conservation rebates near me?
Use the EPA’s WaterSense Rebate Finder to search by partner, rebate type, building type, and state or province. The EPA provides rebate information, but local partners provide the rebates. Contact your water provider to confirm that a program is active and that the exact product and purchase qualify.
Before buying, verify the conditions that can determine eligibility:
- Whether your address and customer type are covered.
- Whether the specific product or model qualifies and must carry a WaterSense label.
- Whether the rebate requires replacing an existing item, particular installation, or pre-approval.
- Purchase and application deadlines, available funding, and required documentation.
Program details are local and can change. For example, Honolulu’s Board of Water Supply residential rebate page was updated August 3, 2026, and lists specified products and program conditions. Tampa’s rebate page describes selected rebates and restrictions effective April 3, 2026. Neither program applies outside its defined service area. How should I compare a water-saving upgrade with doing nothing?
Estimate the opportunity for your own home rather than treating a national savings estimate as a promise. For each possible upgrade, check:
