Re:

Was The Washington Post Profitable and Growing Under Jeff Bezos?

The Post’s two-year profitability claim was reported in 2018 and attributed to publisher Fred Ryan. Later reports documented profitability, a 2023 loss, and a 2026 break-even forecast.

Yes—according to a January 2018 report, The Washington Post had recorded two consecutive profitable years, while its digital subscriptions more than doubled and digital advertising revenue grew. Publisher Fred Ryan made the profitability claim. It describes a reported milestone at the time, not the newspaper’s current financial position.

What the 2018 report said

GeekWire reported on January 9, 2018, that publisher Fred Ryan told staff the Post had achieved a second consecutive profitable year. The same account said digital subscriptions had more than doubled and digital advertising revenue had grown. Those are separate measures: growth in digital advertising does not, by itself, establish growth in total revenue.

Ryan also connected the reported profits to plans to expand the Washington, D.C., headquarters, increase the editorial team beyond 800, and invest in technology. He said, “The partnership between news and technology is powering our growth.” GeekWire’s January 2018 report attributed the financial claim to Ryan; it was not an independently audited public disclosure.

How that milestone fits the wider timeline

Date What was reported What the figure means
October 1, 2013 The sale of The Washington Post and other newspaper-division assets to Jeff Bezos was completed, according to the paper’s corporate history. Establishes the start of Bezos’ ownership, not a financial result. The Post’s corporate history
January 2018 Fred Ryan said the paper had posted a second consecutive profitable year; digital subscriptions more than doubled and digital ad revenue grew. A publisher’s reported statement about the preceding two-year period, not an audited annual series. GeekWire
February 2021 The Post said it had enjoyed five straight profitable years during Marty Baron’s tenure, and had more than 3 million digital-only subscribers. A broader reported profitability period and a dated subscriber count. The same account noted declining print circulation. The Washington Post
June 2024 The Post reported that publisher William Lewis said the company lost $77 million in 2023, an improvement on a previously projected $100 million loss. A loss figure attributed to the publisher; the paper said recent earnings statements had remained private. The Washington Post
September 2026 A Post spokesperson said the company was on track to break even in 2026 and had sold 300,000 subscriptions so far that year. A forecast and a year-to-date sales figure, not a final annual result or subscriber-base total. The Washington Post

Profit, subscriptions, and audience are different measures

  • Profit or loss describes the financial result for a period. Public reporting cited here does not provide a complete audited annual series for the Post.
  • Digital-only subscribers are paying customers counted at a point in time. The Post reported more than 3 million in 2021; that is not interchangeable with subscription sales during a later year.
  • Subscription sales are not necessarily net additions. The 300,000 figure reported for 2026 does not specify cancellations, net subscriber gains, or the precise meaning of “sold.”
  • Audience traffic counts visitors, not subscribers. The Associated Press reported 101 million monthly unique visitors in 2020 and 50 million at the end of 2023. The Post’s 2024 account also described its audience as having fallen by half since 2020. Associated Press
  • Digital advertising revenue is one revenue stream. Its growth in the 2018 account does not prove that overall revenue grew.

Is The Washington Post profitable now?

The cited reporting does not establish that the Post is currently profitable. In February 2026, Semafor reported that executive editor Matt Murray described a declining business as revenue fell and subscriptions waned. He gave no timeline for profitability and said the company was trying to reach stability, then break even, then growth. Semafor’s February 2026 report

  • IN-DEPTH READING: Immerse yourself in a full story, where the focus is on storytelling enhanced by visual elements.
  • STREAMLINED DESIGN: Enjoy an uncluttered reading experience and avoid being overloaded by constant news updates.
  • AWARD-WINNING COVERAGE: Stay informed with quality national reporting and expertly curated articles.
  • TWO DAILY EDITIONS: Receive two complete daily editions, plus important updates throughout the day.

In September 2026, a Post spokesperson said the company was on track to break even that year. That is an outlook, not confirmation of the eventual result. Bezos had earlier written that returning to profitability was important as “a key signal that we’re serving readers in a way that’s important to them,” in a staff email quoted by the Post in 2024.

What can—and cannot—be concluded

The title’s claim is supported as a historical account: in 2018, Ryan said the Post had achieved two consecutive profitable years and reported growth in digital subscriptions and digital advertising. Later Post reporting described five straight profitable years during Baron’s tenure, followed by a reported 2023 loss. Because the Post is privately owned and the cited reporting says its recent earnings statements were not public, these accounts do not establish a full independently verifiable profit-and-loss history from the 2013 sale onward.
