Not for a new customer who needed the equipment. During the 2024 Hurricane Helene response, Starlink promoted 30 days of free service in affected areas, but contemporaneous reporting found that new customers still had to buy a Starlink kit. The Register observed a checkout total just shy of $400 after shipping and tax, followed by a reported $120 monthly residential subscription after the free period. Those are historical 2024 terms, not confirmed prices or an offer available in 2026.
What did “free Starlink” cover?
The promotion covered a limited period of service, not necessarily the satellite dish and other hardware needed to connect. The Register reported that Starlink’s signup flow required a new customer to buy a kit, and that the company clarified the requirement on its help page. Gizmodo likewise described an upfront equipment cost. (The Register, October 8, 2024; Gizmodo, October 8, 2024)
That distinction matters: a free month of connectivity is not the same as a free terminal, nor does it mean later internet access remains free.
How much did the Starlink kit cost?
The Register reported several different figures that should not be treated as interchangeable:
#1 Best Overall
- Starlink provides reliable high-speed, low-latency, internet wherever you live
- Service plan required, activate STARLINK by selecting a service plan that is customized to meet your personal needs
- Select from plans suited for households or travel
- Get online in minutes, set up STARLINK with just 2-steps, plug it in and point at the sky
- STARLINK comes with everything needed to get online including a kickstand, gen 3-router, cables and power supply
| Figure | What it described |
|---|---|
| Just shy of $400 | The Register’s observed checkout total for a new signup, including shipping and tax; a historical checkout observation, not a current price. |
| $350 | The kit’s regular price as reported by The Register in October 2024. |
| $299 | A disaster-relief kit price reported elsewhere and relayed by The Register; it said that price did not appear in the signup page it examined. |
The near-$400 figure was the reported total at checkout, not a claim that the dish alone cost $400. The $299 figure was a separate reported price, not the amount The Register saw in its own checkout flow. (The Register)
Did the free period turn into a paid plan?
For new customers, The Register reported that the 30-day period was followed by automatic movement to a residential plan costing $120 per month at the time. Gizmodo also reported that historical monthly price. This describes the 2024 offer as reported then; it does not establish Starlink’s current rates or terms. (The Register; Gizmodo)

- Gen 3 Satellite Dish: Third-generation antenna delivers a stronger, more stable signal and faster performance.
- Wi-Fi 6 Router: Modern router technology supports faster speeds, increased device capacity, and better efficiency.
- Extra 150FT Cable Included: Extended reach for more flexible installation in large spaces or hard-to-access locations.
- High-Speed, Low-Latency Internet: Stream HD content, video conference, or work remotely with confidence.
- Ideal for Rural and Remote Areas: Perfect for homes, cabins, RVs, boats, and off-grid setups where wired internet isn’t available.
Existing customers were handled differently: according to The Register, customers seeking waived service charges had to open a support ticket for review. The reporting therefore does not support treating every survivor as having the same equipment cost, eligibility, or billing path.
Would the offer have helped someone without internet?
Even when service itself was free, getting online depended on practical conditions. The Register reported that signup required enough connectivity to use Starlink’s website, the terminal needed electricity, and some orders had a two-to-three-week delivery estimate. In an area where cellular and wired networks were down for an extended period, the service could still be valuable—but a long delivery window could mean ordinary connections returned first.

- Power: The terminal needed electricity to operate.
- Signup access: A customer needed a way to reach the signup website.
- Delivery timing: Some reported orders were expected to take two to three weeks.
- Different customer circumstances: New customers needed equipment; existing subscribers seeking a waiver were directed to support review.
Boone resident Kinney Baughman, described by The Register as a philosophy professor and IT professional, said: “There may be isolated scenarios when what [Musk] is offering will be a service.” That was his assessment, not a measured conclusion about every Helene survivor. (The Register)

Starlink’s own retrospective describes support for first responders, search-and-rescue teams, hospitals, schools, police patrols, fire trucks, and residents. It says residents received free Starlink service for the rest of 2024 and reports more than 300,000 messages sent and received through Direct to Cell in affected areas, along with hundreds of emergency alerts. These are company-reported figures and claims, not an independent evaluation of the response or the consumer signup terms. (Starlink Progress for 2024: Disaster Relief)

- Not official Starlink Bundle. No warranty.
- This is not an official starlink bundle. Purchasing this item does not come with a Starlink warranty.
- This is not Starlink. You will not receive a warranty with this bundle created by an outside seller.
So the offer should not be reduced to either “all Starlink was free” or “there was no free service.” Starlink says it supported residents and emergency responders; contemporaneous consumer reporting found that a new customer using the promoted signup offer still faced an equipment purchase and, after 30 days, a paid-plan transition.
Can people still claim the Helene offer?
The identified promotion and prices relate to the 2024 disaster response. The reporting available here does not establish that the offer remains open in 2026, or what current Starlink hardware and subscription prices are. Anyone considering service now should check Starlink’s current availability, eligibility, and checkout terms rather than rely on the historical figures above.
