No. HBO’s 2024 documentary Money Electric: The Bitcoin Mystery argued that Bitcoin developer Peter Todd could be Satoshi Nakamoto, but it offered circumstantial clues rather than conclusive proof. Todd has repeatedly denied the claim. The accompanying description of him as “in hiding” referred to a reported safety response in October 2024; Todd later disputed that characterization. Neither the documentary’s allegation nor that time-specific description establishes Todd’s current circumstances.
What did the documentary say about Peter Todd?
Filmmaker Cullen Hoback’s documentary proposed that Todd might be Satoshi, the pseudonymous creator of Bitcoin. Hoback told WIRED, “While of course we can’t outright say he is Satoshi, I think that we make a very strong case.” That qualification matters: the film presented an argument, not proof of identity. The Washington Post likewise reported on the film’s launch that it had not produced incontrovertible evidence.
The central clue was a December 2010 BitcoinTalk discussion about prioritizing transactions by fee. Hoback interpreted a reply by Todd as if Todd had continued or “finished” a post by Satoshi. The filmmaker connected that exchange to Todd’s later work on transaction replacement by fee. The film also pointed to alleged similarities in British and Canadian spelling, posting schedules that Hoback said could fit Todd’s student timetable, and a “John Dillon” pseudonym he attributed to Todd. These are the film’s interpretations of posts and patterns, not independently established proof of authorship. WIRED’s account of the allegation and The Washington Post’s launch-day report describe the case and its limits.
Why has the forum-post theory been challenged?
Former Bitcoin Core developer Gregory Maxwell challenged a key premise behind the supposed accidental slip. As quoted by The Block, Maxwell said Todd’s relevant account was then named “retep” and had no immediately obvious connection to his identity. If Todd had inadvertently revealed himself, Maxwell argued, he could have abandoned that account rather than later having it renamed to his legal name. That objection does not by itself settle who wrote the posts, but it weakens the idea that the exchange plainly exposed Todd as Satoshi. The Block’s coverage includes Maxwell’s response.

- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Hoback also said he found Todd’s body language during their confrontation incriminating. Todd said he was trolling the filmmaker and called the idea ridiculous. A filmmaker’s reading of facial expressions is subjective; it cannot establish identity. WIRED reported that Todd provided images of outdoor activities that appeared, on superficial metadata, to overlap with periods of Satoshi forum activity. WIRED said it had not forensically analyzed the images and could not attest to their value as an alibi. Neither the body-language interpretation nor the images settle the question.
What has Peter Todd said?
Todd has denied being Satoshi, including before the documentary premiered. He told CoinDesk, “Of course, I’m not Satoshi.” In a later statement quoted by WIRED, he said, “For the record, I am not Satoshi.” His joking on-camera “I am Satoshi” remark was not a confession: contemporaneous coverage described it as a joke and noted his earlier formulation that “everyone is Satoshi.”

Todd also objected to the consequences of trying to identify Satoshi. In an email to The Washington Post, he said, “Not only is the question dumb, it’s dangerous,” arguing that naming someone could expose them to threats by portraying them as extraordinarily wealthy. That is his stated concern, not independent confirmation of a particular threat or of anyone’s financial holdings.
Was Todd actually “in hiding”?
WIRED reported in October 2024 that Todd feared harassment and possible personal danger and had gone into hiding for safety. Days later, Todd disputed the label. CoinDesk reported that he called the claim “exaggerated” and pointed to his appearance at a conference in Atlanta on October 23, 2024. The reports document a contemporaneous concern and disagreement over how to describe his response; they do not establish his present location, living arrangements, or safety situation.

Does the Satoshi mystery remain open?
Yes. The Todd allegation did not resolve Satoshi’s identity. Later 2026 coverage described a separate theory that Adam Back was a leading candidate; Back denied being Satoshi. That, too, is a disputed identification rather than proof. The available reporting leaves the question unsettled, not a confirmed list of candidates. The New York Times’ 2026 report covered the Back theory and denial.
