There is no verified evidence in the available reports that Meghan Markle earned $800 per episode—or any other stated $800 rate—as a briefcase model on the U.S. version of Deal or No Deal. In her 2022 account, she said the job provided income and health insurance, but she disliked feeling that it valued her appearance over her intelligence.

Was Meghan Markle paid $800 per episode?

The $800 figure is unverified. The contemporaneous reports of Markle’s comments do not state her pay, explain what an $800 amount would cover, or identify whether it would be per episode, per taping, or something else. That does not prove the figure is false; it means the available reporting does not establish it.

Vanity Fair covered Markle’s comments on October 18, 2022, and ELLE published excerpts from the same conversation that day. Neither report supplies an $800 rate. Vanity Fair’s report and ELLE’s coverage document what she said about the work, not a specific paycheck.

What did Markle say about her Deal or No Deal job?

Markle discussed her time as a briefcase model on the U.S. show during an episode of her Archetypes podcast with Paris Hilton. She said she was grateful for the work: it gave her income and health insurance while she was auditioning as an actor. As ELLE reported her remarks, she said, “So while Deal or No Deal wasn’t about acting, I was still really grateful as an auditioning actress to have a job that could pay my bills. I had income, I was part of the union, I had health insurance, it was great.”

Her criticism was about how she experienced the role, not a stated complaint about a particular pay rate. She said she felt valued for her appearance rather than her intellect and put it this way: “I didn’t like feeling forced to be all looks and little substance.” She also said the experience made her feel objectified.

Why did Markle leave the show?

Her stated reason was that the role did not feel fulfilling and left her feeling reduced to her looks. Her comments also made clear that she appreciated the income and benefits the job provided. Those two parts of her account can coexist: gratitude for work does not mean she liked every aspect of it.

Markle recalled backstage preparation before tapings and said a woman told her to “suck it in.” That is her recollection of an interaction; it should not be treated as independently verified evidence of a general production rule or policy.

Howie Mandel’s response

Former host Howie Mandel responded to Markle’s comments in a Vanity Fair report published October 28, 2022. He said he understood why she might have found the role unfulfilling and did not think she was maligning the show. Vanity Fair quoted him: “I think Meghan just said she wanted to do more. It wasn’t fulfilling for her.”
