That comparison helps explain why the film was described as a box-office disappointment, but it does not establish that it was Disney’s biggest bomb in nearly a decade—or calculate the studio’s loss. The film also drew controversy over casting, adaptation choices, representation of the seven dwarfs, and the actors’ public statements and perceived politics.
What did Snow White earn at the box office?
Box Office Mojo lists Snow White’s worldwide theatrical gross as $205,679,463, comprising $87,203,963 domestically and $118,475,500 internationally. These are listed theatrical grosses, not the amount Disney kept after theaters’ shares and other deductions. The figures were accessed October 8, 2026. Box Office Mojo’s title record provides the domestic and international breakdown.

The Numbers estimates the film’s production budget at $269.4 million and describes worldwide box office as approximately 0.8 times that estimate. The budget is an estimate, not a disclosed final cost. Comparing it with theatrical gross does not establish a net loss: the comparison does not account for theater rentals, marketing, or other revenue and expenses. The Numbers’ film record does not supply a complete profit-and-loss statement.
Was it Disney’s biggest box-office bomb in nearly a decade?
The available figures do not verify that ranking. “Biggest” could mean lowest opening, lowest gross, or largest net loss, and those measures are not interchangeable. Establishing a comparative ranking would require a consistent set of Disney films and comparable figures—especially budget and revenue data sufficient to estimate losses. The cited box-office and budget records do not establish that the 2025 film was Disney’s biggest financial failure in nearly a decade.

The U.S. wide release was March 21, 2025. Box Office Mojo lists a domestic opening of $42,206,415. In a March 23, 2025 report, the Associated Press described an estimated $43 million domestic opening and an $87.3 million global launch. The AP’s domestic figure was a contemporaneous studio-estimate report; the database’s $42.2 million is its listed opening figure. They differ in attribution and reporting context, so they should not be presented as identical measurements. The Associated Press report also put the U.S. opening below Dumbo (2019), at $46 million, and Cinderella (2015), at $67.9 million. Those opening-weekend comparisons do not prove a ranking by long-term losses.
What controversies surrounded the film?
Several debates unfolded around the release. Coverage documented them, but the available sources do not demonstrate that any one controversy caused the film’s final box office.
Casting and identity
Rachel Zegler, an actor of Colombian descent, faced racist backlash over her casting as Snow White. Public discussion also focused on Zegler’s and Gal Gadot’s political associations. The existence of that coverage is evidence of controversy, not evidence of a measurable effect on ticket sales. The Associated Press covered the film’s release and surrounding debate.

Changing the 1937 story
Zegler had described elements of the original romance as dated and criticized the prince’s behavior. That prompted disagreement over whether the remake altered the familiar story too much or not enough. Disney describes the 2025 film as a live-action musical reimagining of its 1937 animated classic. Disney’s film overview identifies the movie as a reimagining.
The seven dwarfs and representation
Actor Peter Dinklage criticized the premise of retelling a story featuring dwarfs. Disney said it had consulted members of the dwarfism community to avoid reinforcing stereotypes. Discussion also addressed the use of CGI characters rather than dwarf performers. These are distinct questions: how dwarfism is represented, who is employed to portray the characters, and how closely the film should follow its source. The Associated Press reported on the dwarfs and premiere context.
Publicity and politics
Reporting described controversy around public statements and the actors’ perceived political positions. The Associated Press reported that Disney scaled back the premiere amid public-relations issues. That release context does not establish that publicity decisions or political debate caused the final theatrical result. The Associated Press report discusses the opening and publicity environment.

What is the film, and when was it released?
Snow White is Disney’s live-action musical reimagining of the 1937 animated film. Marc Webb directed; Erin Cressida Wilson wrote the screenplay; Rachel Zegler stars as Snow White opposite Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen. Disney says Benj Pasek and Justin Paul wrote original songs for the film. Webb described the approach as a new lens on a familiar character: “Snow White is iconic, obviously, and the opportunity to look at that character and her story through a slightly new lens was thrilling.” The quote appears in Disney’s pre-release article about the film.
The U.S. wide theatrical release was March 21, 2025; the listed international rollout began March 19. The Numbers lists the U.S. theatrical runtime as 109 minutes and the rating as PG. Disney+ displays a runtime of 1 hour 53 minutes; because the services list different durations, those figures should not be treated as the same release record. The Numbers’ record supplies the theatrical runtime and rating, while Disney+’s listing displays its runtime.

How to read the “bomb” label
In ordinary coverage, “box-office bomb” is a shorthand for disappointing theatrical performance, not a standardized accounting measure. For this film, the most defensible summary is that its listed worldwide gross was below The Numbers’ estimated production budget. That is a warning sign, but not a complete calculation of studio profitability. A reliable comparison with other Disney releases should use the same measure for each film—such as final worldwide gross or domestic opening—and keep opening-weekend figures separate from final totals. A claim about biggest financial loss needs comparable cost and revenue information, not gross alone.
