Yes—according to Netflix’s weekly report dated Dec. 17, 2024, Carry-On had the biggest opening for a Netflix film that year, with 42 million views in its opening week and Top 10 placement in 93 countries. That does not mean 42 million individual people watched it: Netflix defines a view as hours viewed divided by a title’s runtime.
What Netflix reported about Carry-On’s debut
Netflix placed Carry-On at No. 1 on its English-language films list for the week reported Dec. 17, 2024. The company recorded 42 million views and said the film entered the Top 10 in 93 countries. Netflix described it as the biggest opening for a Netflix film in 2024. Netflix’s weekly Top 10 report makes this a dated opening-week chart result—not an all-time Netflix debut record.

Why 42 million views is not 42 million viewers
Netflix calculates a title’s “views” by dividing the hours watched by its runtime. The figure is therefore a platform-defined viewing metric, not a count of unique people, tickets sold, or total hours watched. Netflix’s shareholder letter describes title views over the first 91 days after release, with shorter measurement windows noted where applicable; the 42 million figure cited here is specifically the opening-week result. What Carry-On is about
Released on Netflix on Dec. 13, 2024, Carry-On is a thriller set on Christmas Eve. TSA agent Ethan Kopek is blackmailed by a mysterious traveler who wants him to let a dangerous package onto a flight. Netflix lists the film as a 2024 thriller on its official title page; catalog availability and language options can vary by territory.

Cast and production
Taron Egerton plays Ethan Kopek, Jason Bateman plays the blackmailer, and Sofia Carson plays Nora Parisi. The ensemble also includes Danielle Deadwyler, Theo Rossi, Logan Marshall-Green, Dean Norris, Sinqua Walls, Gil Perez-Abraham, and Tonatiuh. Jaume Collet-Serra directed, and T.J. Fixman wrote the screenplay. Netflix says the film was its first collaboration with Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Partners under a partnership announced in 2021. Is Carry-On a Christmas movie?
It is a Christmas-set action thriller: the story unfolds during holiday travel, and the airport is decorated for the season. Director Jaume Collet-Serra told Netflix Tudum, “My hope is that Carry-On can be enjoyed all year round as a fun, popcorn thriller, but of course, the holiday travel theme is integral to our story, and we definitely had fun with it in terms of Christmas decorations in the airport and some classic holiday tunes in the soundtrack.”

How realistic is its airport security?
The production consulted two LAX TSA advisers, and Netflix reports that filming took place in a retired New Orleans airport redesigned to stand in for LAX. One adviser, Dr. Erroll G. Southers, told Tudum, “I was a technical adviser that was brought on for situational accuracy as it related to the agencies that are at an airport.” Tudum identifies Southers as a former airport police and homeland-security official, not a current TSA official. Consultation may inform a film’s depiction, but it does not establish that every screening procedure or event shown is accurate.
How reviewers and viewers rated it
As of Oct. 8, 2026, Rotten Tomatoes displayed an 87% Tomatometer from 107 reviews and a 52% Popcornmeter from more than 5,000 ratings. The Tomatometer summarizes critics’ reviews; the Popcornmeter reflects audience ratings. Both are changing snapshots, not permanent scores. Rotten Tomatoes’ consensus characterizes the film as a throwback thriller and praises Egerton and Bateman as adversaries. Rotten Tomatoes’ Carry-On page lists the ratings and credits the film at 1 hour 59 minutes with a PG-13 rating.
