No. The former Bell Laboratories campus in Holmdel, New Jersey, was not returned to use as a research laboratory. It was redeveloped as Bell Works, a mixed-use destination for offices, retail, dining, hospitality and public activity. Selected architectural features were retained or refreshed, but that is different from restoring the building’s former function.

Which Bell Labs building does this refer to?

This article is about Bell Laboratories-Holmdel in New Jersey, now called Bell Works. It is distinct from Bell Labs’ former Manhattan complex, which became Westbeth Artists’ Housing. The New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission record concerns the Manhattan property, not the Holmdel campus. The National Park Service’s record for Bell Laboratories-Holmdel identifies the New Jersey site.

What happened to the Holmdel campus?

The National Park Service dates construction of the Holmdel building to 1959–1966 and says it served as a Bell Laboratories and successor Alcatel-Lucent research and development facility from 1959 to 2007. After Somerset Development acquired the property in 2013, it was adapted for new uses rather than reopened as a research lab. Docomomo-US documents the redevelopment as a large-scale adaptive reuse project that transformed the former headquarters into a mixed-use town center.

Aspect Former Bell Laboratories-Holmdel Bell Works today
Primary function Research and development facility for Bell Laboratories and Alcatel-Lucent, 1959–2007, according to the National Park Service Mixed-use destination with offices, retail, dining and hospitality, according to Bell Works
Architecture and interiors Modernist building designed by Eero Saarinen and Associates, with a campus landscape designed by Hideo Sasaki Selected design features retained or refreshed within the adapted building
Access Research facility Privately managed; some areas are open to the public
Heritage status National Register of Historic Places listing dated June 26, 2017 The listing applies to the historic property; it does not mean every space is open to visitors

What does “restored” mean at Bell Works?

It is accurate to describe the project as adaptive reuse and to say that particular elements were restored or refreshed. It is not accurate to say the entire building was restored to its former status as a laboratory or returned in every respect to its original condition.

Modernist design and campus setting

The National Park Service identifies the work of Eero Saarinen and Associates and landscape architect Hideo Sasaki as central to the site’s significance. Additions overseen by Kevin Roche and John Dinkeloo between 1982 and 1985 were designed to maintain the building’s original configuration, volume, massing, circulation pattern and material palette. Docomomo-US describes features including mirrored glass, flexible office and laboratory layouts, atria and corridors.

Features carried into the new use

Bell Works says the lobby conversation pit was refreshed and restored, and describes the atrium floor pattern as inspired by Josef Albers. Those details show how recognizable design cues were carried into a new setting; they do not establish that every original feature remains unchanged. Bell Works’ description of the destination and building presents the current mix of business and cultural uses.

Is Bell Works open to visitors?

Bell Works says it is open to the public seven days a week. The National Park Service describes the property as privately managed, with some areas open to the public. Neither statement guarantees access to every tenant, event, interior space or roof area. Check the operator’s current information for hours, tour arrangements and event access before making a visit.

What is the building’s preservation status?

The National Park Service lists Bell Laboratories-Holmdel on the National Register of Historic Places, with a listing date of June 26, 2017, and reference number 16000223. The listing recognizes the property’s historic significance; it is separate from the question of whether the building still performs its original research function. The NPS listing discusses the building’s architectural, landscape and scientific significance.

What is known about Bell Works’ solar glass?

Bell Works reports that its glass ceiling incorporates more than 3,000 photovoltaic panes across 60,000 square feet. The operator says the system has a stated capacity of 180 kW and supplies power for 20 percent of common-area needs and EV charging stations. These are operator-published figures; the cited material does not establish independent verification or actual annual energy output. Bell Works’ site information describes the system.
