Danish outlet Tipsbladet said The Athletic later updated its report to say Povlsen had no plans to bid. Sheffield Wednesday’s sale was completed by Arise Capital Partners in May 2026.
Was Anders Holch Povlsen interested in buying Sheffield Wednesday?
The evidence supports a reported link, not a confirmed offer. On 2 December 2025, BBC Sport’s Scottish football gossip roundup said The Athletic had reported that Povlsen was one of the bidders. The BBC item was a secondary summary of a subscription report: BBC Sport’s 2 December 2025 roundup.
The next day, Danish football outlet Tipsbladet reported that The Athletic had updated its story to say Povlsen had no plans to bid, and that Tipsbladet’s own indications matched that update. That makes the initial link insufficient evidence of an offer or active takeover attempt: Tipsbladet’s 3 December 2025 report.
Who bought Sheffield Wednesday?
Sheffield Wednesday’s sale was completed by Arise Capital Partners LLC in May 2026, not Povlsen. On 10 March 2026, the club announced Arise had been selected as preferred bidder after the previous preferred bidder withdrew. The club named David Storch, Michael Storch and Tom Costin as members of the consortium: Sheffield Wednesday’s 10 March announcement.

On 2 May, the EFL said administrators had concluded an agreement with Arise to transfer the club’s assets and place it under new ownership. The EFL identified David Storch as leading the consortium, alongside Michael Storch and Tom Costin. BTG, the administrator, confirmed on 5 May that the sale had completed in accordance with regulatory requirements: EFL statement of 2 May 2026 and BTG confirmation of completion.
How to distinguish a takeover link from a completed purchase
Sheffield Wednesday’s sale illustrates why a name appearing in a media report is not equivalent to ownership. These are distinct stages, and the available notices establish different things at each point:

The EFL says acquisitions of control are subject to requirements of both the EFL and the Independent Football Regulator. Forbes estimated Povlsen’s wealth at $16.9 billion on its 2026 sports-team-owner list, which identifies him as owner of FC Midtjylland: Forbes’ 2026 list. Forbes had estimated his wealth at $12.8 billion as of 7 March 2025 on its 2025 list: Forbes’ 2025 list.
Rank #3
The $13.3 billion figure in the original headline is not supported by those Forbes lists. These are dated estimates, not audited cash balances, and neither figure shows that Povlsen committed money to Sheffield Wednesday. His association with FC Midtjylland is football-ownership context; it does not prove interest in the English club.
