What happened, and when?
On 25 October 2024, Lotterywest announced that a single-entry Division One Powerball ticket had won the full $30 million jackpot. It was bought at Malaga Newsagency and registered to a Lotterywest membership. The operator said it had contacted the ticketholder that morning. Lotterywest’s 25 October announcement reported the initial identification.
At that point, it was not yet clear whether the registered ticket holder had bought the entry alone or as part of a group. Contemporary coverage said the holder did not need to confirm the win in person at Lotterywest headquarters because the ticket was registered. PerthNow’s 25 October report described that contact process.
Lotterywest clarified the outcome on 31 October: the ticket belonged to 15 workmates, who each held an equal share of a System 10 entry and would receive $2 million apiece. One member had forgotten their usual Saturday Lotto ticket and bought a Powerball entry instead. Lotterywest’s 31 October follow-up identified the group and its split.

Who won the Malaga Newsagency Powerball?
The winners were a syndicate of 15 workmates. Lotterywest’s announcements identify them as a group, but do not name the individual members. The later account resolved the uncertainty in the first report: this was not an individual winner taking the entire prize.
Why did registration matter?
The ticket was linked to a Lotterywest membership, which enabled Lotterywest to contact the registered holder rather than wait for an unregistered ticket to be presented. Lotterywest spokesperson James Mooney said: “Thanks to the ticket being registered, the ticketholder can be assured their prize is safe and they can let this life-changing win sink in and visit Lotterywest HQ in their own time,” he said. The statement appeared in the operator’s 25 October announcement.
