Warner Bros. Games acquired Player First Games, the studio that developed MultiVersus, on July 22, 2024. The companies did not disclose the purchase price. Player First co-founders Tony Huynh and Chris White were to continue leading the studio.
What did Warner Bros. Games acquire?
The deal was an acquisition of Player First Games, not a separately described purchase of the MultiVersus game. Warner Bros. Games identified Player First as the developer of the free-to-play platform fighter and said the studio would continue operating under its co-founders, Tony Huynh and Chris White. The announcement said they would report to Carlos Barbosa, then Warner Bros. Games’ vice president and studio head. Warner Bros. Games’ July 22, 2024 announcement did not disclose a deal value.
Why did Warner Bros. Games acquire Player First Games?
The publisher’s stated rationale was to bring an established working relationship in-house: it said it had worked with Player First for several years to create and launch MultiVersus. Huynh said integrating the development team with the publisher was optimal for players. Those comments describe the companies’ rationale; the announcement did not provide financial terms or evidence about the acquisition’s business results.
What happened to MultiVersus after the acquisition?
MultiVersus launched on May 28, 2024, before the acquisition announcement. Warner Bros. Games described it as a free-to-play platform fighter for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Steam, and Epic Games Store, with cross-play and cross-progression. The launch announcement listed those platforms and features.

The game’s later service history shows that the acquisition did not guarantee indefinite operation. Warner Bros. Games’ Season 5 FAQ said Season 5, which ran from February 4 through May 30, 2025, would be the final season. Real-money transactions ended January 31, 2025. The available official statements establish the acquisition and the later end-of-service decision, but do not say that one caused the other.

Online play and new downloads through PlayStation Network, Microsoft Store, Steam, and Epic Games Store ended after May 30, 2025, according to the Season 5 FAQ. Offline local play is a narrower exception: players needed to install the latest version and log in during Season 5. The FAQ says that offline play includes local matches for up to four players and training mode. It also says players who deleted the game before Season 5 ended could reinstall it afterward, so the end of storefront downloads should not be read as a blanket loss of reinstall access for every previous player.
