According to PerthNow’s report of 9 October 2023, he was one of seven division one winners and received a reported share of $738,000. The story is an account of a past win, not a current Lotterywest draw result, and the winner has not been named.
What happened
For most of his Saturday Lotto habit, the winner bought his ticket from a local retailer on the way home from work. One Saturday he was kept back at work late and could not get to the shop, so he bought his entry through the Lotterywest app instead. He told PerthNow:
“I usually buy a ticket from my retailer after work, but I was held back late and ended up having to buy my ticket online.”
He checked the ticket on Sunday morning. Most of the time, he said, the result is either “not a winner” or a small prize. This time the result was different:

The prize and how it was shared
Seven people held division one winning tickets in that draw. The winner’s reported share was $738,000. The article does not give the total prize pool for that draw, and it does not say how the seven shares were calculated, so the $738,000 figure should be read as the amount PerthNow reported for his share alone.

The wider context PerthNow gave
PerthNow also quoted Lotterywest spokesperson James Mooney, who said this was Western Australia’s 70th division one winning ticket sold that year. Mooney said those 70 tickets had shared more than $192 million. Both figures are attributed to Mooney in the October 2023 article. They describe the year as reported at that time, and they have not been updated since.
Unclaimed winnings
The article also cited Lotterywest’s most recent annual report at the time. PerthNow reported that $30 million in winnings went unclaimed in the preceding financial year. It also said $28 million was still available to be claimed, down from $38 million in 2022. The two numbers are different: the first is the unclaimed amount for the preceding financial year, and the second is the amount PerthNow said remained. The report text as quoted does not specify the exact financial-year dates, so the article’s relative wording is the safest way to present them.

What the story does and does not show
The late shift did not cause the win, and the app did not improve the winner’s odds. The only change was the channel he used to buy the ticket. Buying through a retailer or through the app does not change the chance that a given ticket wins, and nothing in the article suggests otherwise. The article’s point is that an unplanned change in routine led to a purchase he would not normally have made.
For readers, the practical lesson is simple. Check every ticket, including the ones you did not expect to matter. The winner’s routine was to check the result on Sunday morning, and he only found out he had won because he looked.
