Why does the headline say €78 billion?
Xinhua reported a valuation of 600 billion yuan, approximately US$83 billion. The €78 billion phrasing appeared in a later Daily Galaxy headline; it is a secondary conversion, not the amount or currency quoted by Xinhua. The cited accounts do not specify a dated exchange-rate calculation behind that euro figure, so it should not be treated as a precise, directly reported valuation.
In any case, a headline valuation is not the same as revenue or profit. It does not, by itself, show how much gold can be economically extracted, what extraction would cost, or what the deposit would ultimately be worth as a producing asset.

What does the reported gold grade mean?
Chen Rulin, an ore-prospecting expert at the Hunan Geological Bureau, said the maximum grade in the 2,000-metre range was 138 grams of gold per tonne of ore. That is a reported maximum, not an average grade for the entire field or the deeper estimate. Xinhua also attributed to Chen the observation: “Many drilled rock cores showed visible gold.” Visible gold in drill cores is an observation; it does not establish that all of the estimated gold can be recovered commercially.
How was the deposit identified?
Liu Yongjun, vice head of the Hunan Geological Bureau, said the prospecting work used methods including 3D geological modeling. Liu also said: “Gold was also found during drills around the site’s peripheral areas.” Those findings describe exploration and drilling. The cited account does not provide a feasibility study or establish the economics of developing the site.

- Reported: the bureau’s location, vein count, depth-specific estimates, maximum grade, prospecting methods and valuation, as relayed by Xinhua.
- Not established in the cited account: an independently classified economically recoverable quantity for the full 3,000-metre estimate, a feasibility study, or the start of commercial extraction.
For that reason, the most accurate description is a major reported geological estimate at Wangu, rather than a confirmed quantity of market-ready gold. “Worth €78 billion” compresses an estimate and a currency conversion into a headline; it should not be read as a verified sale value or realized financial return.
