Huang’s family alleged that Tesla’s vehicle design and Autopilot-related safeguards contributed to his death; Tesla argued that driver inattention caused the crash. The opening-day report describes the dispute, not a verdict.
What happened in the Walter Huang crash?
Huang died on March 23, 2018, when his 2017 Tesla Model X struck a concrete divider on US Highway 101 near the State Highway 85 interchange. Ars Technica reported that the vehicle was traveling 70 mph and that Autopilot was engaged. The report also said the Model X had drifted toward the highway gore on at least two occasions in the four weeks before the fatal crash.
What did Huang’s family and Tesla argue?
| Issue | Family’s allegation | Tesla’s defense, as reported |
|---|---|---|
| Vehicle and safety systems | The family alleged the Model X lacked adequate crash-avoidance and automatic emergency-braking protections. | The report does not describe a specific Tesla response to each alleged design shortcoming. |
| Warnings and driver attention | The family alleged Tesla was negligent in its warnings about Autopilot. | Tesla argued Huang was inattentive, was not holding the steering wheel in the final seconds, and was playing a video game on his phone. |
These were the parties’ positions as described in the April 8, 2024 report, not findings by a jury. The available opening-day account does not establish which account the court ultimately accepted.
What did the NTSB investigation say?
The National Transportation Safety Board investigated the crash and reported findings in 2020. Ars Technica said the NTSB criticized Tesla’s marketing and safeguards for maintaining driver engagement, and also criticized Caltrans because a damaged crash attenuator had not been replaced. The report characterized the NTSB’s conclusions as assigning shared blame, but said jurors would not be given those conclusions; they would hear factual findings.

An agency investigation and a civil trial serve different purposes. The NTSB findings described in the report are not a jury verdict assigning legal responsibility in the family’s lawsuit.
Why does the distinction about Autopilot matter?
The dispute concerns the interaction of driver-assistance technology, driver attention, vehicle safety design, and roadway crash protection. The report’s account of Autopilot being engaged does not by itself establish that the system caused the crash or that Huang was free of responsibility. Likewise, Tesla’s allegations about Huang’s attention are a defense position, not a court finding.

As Ars Technica reported, NTSB Chairman Robert Sumwalt emphasized that advanced driver-assistance systems do not make a vehicle self-driving: “Every vehicle sold to US consumers still requires the driver to be actively engaged in the driving task, even when advanced driver assistance systems are activated. If you are selling a car with an advanced driver assistance system, you’re not selling a self-driving car. If you are driving a car with an advanced driver assistance system, you don’t own a self-driving car,”
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Did the trial decide who was responsible?
No verdict or later case disposition is established by the April 8, 2024 Ars Technica report. It covered the beginning of the trial, so it cannot support a claim about the final legal outcome. The account available here also does not establish a court finding that Autopilot, Tesla, Huang, or Caltrans was legally responsible.
