Walmart planned to lay off 62 corporate workers in Washington as it closed Store No8, its standalone innovation unit, according to a January 23, 2024 report by GeekWire. The affected office was in Redmond, and the layoffs were scheduled for February 9, 2024.

What Walmart closed and who was affected

Store No8 was an innovation-related business unit Walmart had set up as a standalone model. The 62 affected workers were corporate employees tied to the Redmond office closure; the figure and timing came from a Washington state filing cited by GeekWire. The report does not establish a companywide job-loss total connected to the shutdown.

Why Walmart said it ended Store No8’s standalone model

A Walmart spokesperson told GeekWire that Store No8’s talent and capabilities had been incorporated across the broader company, making the separate structure unnecessary:

“Store No8 was established as a standalone model seven years ago and we’ve since graduated talent and capabilities that are now fully embedded across the broader company,” a spokesperson said in a statement to GeekWire. “Therefore, the standalone model we established with Store No8 is no longer necessary.”

This is Walmart’s stated rationale; the report does not independently assess the unit’s performance.

Redmond closure was distinct from Walmart’s Bellevue tech office

GeekWire reported that Walmart planned to maintain its Bellevue technology office, where most of the company’s Washington technology workers were based. The article also noted more than 20 open Bellevue roles at the time, in January 2024. That dated figure is not a current vacancy count.

What Washington WARN rules do—and do not—establish

Washington’s Employment Security Department says its WARN law applies to qualifying facility or operating-unit closures and mass layoffs. Its guidance describes a 50-full-time-worker threshold for a covered closure at one worksite and requires 60 days’ written notice, subject to the law’s criteria and exceptions. See the department’s WARN requirements.

The existence of a filing does not by itself prove that every legal requirement was met or that a violation occurred. Washington’s WARN layoff and closure database lists fields such as employer, location, effective date, affected-worker count, notice receipt date, and downloadable notice.

What the report does not establish

The January 2024 reporting confirms the planned Redmond layoffs and Walmart’s explanation for ending Store No8 as a standalone unit. It does not establish the unit’s current organizational status or how many Bellevue positions, if any, are open today.
