Walmart’s “augmented reality showrooms” were not a chain-wide rollout of walk-in rooms or AR headsets. The July 1, 2024 report described a broader, mostly mobile-first effort: help shoppers preview products at home or on themselves, share choices with friends, and eventually browse configurable digital rooms. Walmart’s later updates show how that vision developed—but also why a demo, a beta, and a generally available shopping feature should not be treated as the same thing.
What Walmart meant by “AR showrooms”
The phrase came from a July 1, 2024 GamesBeat report based on an interview with Desirée Gosby, then identified as Walmart Global Tech’s vice president of emerging technology. The story covered a portfolio of augmented-reality and spatial-computing work, not a program to install specialized equipment in Walmart stores.
Most of the customer-facing ideas put digital product representations on a phone screen: preview furniture in a room, see apparel or eyewear on a person, or assemble outfits to share. A configurable showroom is a more immersive, room-scale way to explore home products, but it is still a digital shopping environment—not necessarily a physical showroom. The strategy was principally mobile-first, with head-mounted displays described as an area of experimentation rather than the main customer rollout.
What shoppers could visualize or share
Apparel and beauty try-on
Walmart’s portfolio included “Choose Your Own Model,” which showed apparel on a selected model, and “Be Your Own Model,” which used a shopper’s own image. The 2024 reporting said shoppers could choose from about 150 models; that was a figure reported at the time, not a current count. Walmart also described AR visualization for beauty, hair, and makeup. These tools can help with appearance and discovery, but an on-screen image cannot establish how fabric feels, how a garment stretches, or whether it will fit comfortably.

Eyewear
In January 2024, Walmart announced an Optical Virtual Try-On experience for more than 750 eyewear options. Its stated workflow included facial scanning, virtual frame visualization, prescription upload, and pupillary-distance measurement, with planned availability on Walmart.com and in the Walmart app beginning the following month. That announcement documents the launch plan and historical assortment; it does not establish the current number of eligible frames or availability. Virtual visualization also does not replace confirming prescription suitability or fit with an optical professional. Walmart’s announcement has the original details.
Furniture and “View in Your Home”
Walmart’s “View in Your Home” concept let shoppers preview home products in their own space. Placing a digital object in a camera view is useful for judging approximate appearance and placement, but it is not a guarantee of exact scale, color under every light, or how an item will work in a room. Results can depend on the phone, camera permissions, lighting, the product’s 3D asset, and the feature’s availability for that item.
Dynamic Showroom
The 2024 report described a Dynamic Showroom as an inspiration and shopping concept for furniture and other home products. Walmart’s later October 2025 holiday announcement made the format more concrete: shoppers could explore designed rooms, swap furnishings, and shop items in immersive scenes. That later description helps explain the concept, but it should not be read as proof that the same experience was generally available in July 2024 or remains available everywhere today.

Shop with Friends
Walmart introduced Shop with Friends as a beta social-commerce experience at CES in January 2024. It let people combine apparel into multiple virtual looks, share them through messaging or social apps, ask friends for feedback, and receive heart reactions. Walmart’s engineering account says the experience drew on existing virtual-try-on technology, AI/ML models, commerce APIs, and a web-based sharing framework; it was designed to let people participate without a Walmart account. Those are descriptions of the beta’s design, not current access instructions. See the CES announcement and engineering account.
AR paint was a roadmap item
The 2024 report said Walmart expected an AR paint experience in fall 2024. That is evidence of a stated plan at the time, not confirmation that the feature launched or remains available.
AR is not the same as a digital showroom, VR, or a digital twin
These terms overlap in retail discussions, but they describe different things:

- EXPERIENCE VIRTUAL REALITY — Blend virtual objects with your physical space and experience two worlds at once in your VR headset.
- Augmented reality (AR): Digital content aligned with or overlaid on the physical world, such as a virtual frame on a face or furniture placed in a camera view.
- Virtual try-on: A product-specific experience that may use camera-based AR, image processing, or other techniques. The label alone does not establish exactly how a feature works.
- Interactive 3D showroom: A navigable digital scene where a shopper can examine products or change a room’s contents. Depending on the implementation, this may be immersive commerce without being conventional camera-overlay AR.
- Digital twin: A digital representation of a physical object, place, or system. A 3D product asset is not automatically a complete digital twin, and neither term guarantees an AR feature.
- Virtual reality (VR) and extended reality (XR): VR generally places a user in a computer-generated environment; XR is an umbrella term for immersive technologies. Neither should be used as a synonym for a phone-based AR preview.
The July 2024 coverage grouped AR with spatial awareness, spatial computing, digital twins, and XR because Walmart was exploring a connected set of technologies. For shoppers, the practical distinction is whether they are overlaying an item in a real room, viewing a product on a person, or entering a designed digital scene.
Retina was the infrastructure story
Retina was Walmart’s internal AR platform, not simply another consumer app. In October 2024, Walmart said Retina supported 10 AR experiences across Walmart U.S. and Sam’s Club. The company described using AI, generative AI, and automation to create 3D assets at scale; the 2024 interview also described a mix of generative AI, procedural generation, and photogrammetry.
The strategic value is reuse: a shared platform and product assets can support multiple experiences instead of rebuilding every item and workflow separately. Walmart’s engineering account of Shop with Friends also illustrates how an experience can combine AR and AI systems with commerce APIs. Faster asset creation does not by itself guarantee accurate dimensions, materials, proportions, or appearance; those qualities matter if customers are relying on a visualization to make a purchase.

Walmart reported that its AR experiences had increased adoption, reduced return rates, and improved conversion. Those are company-reported results, not independently audited or causal findings in the cited announcement. Walmart did not provide a public measurement method or comparison figures there. Its October update is available in the Retina and immersive-commerce announcement.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why phones mattered more than headsets
The 2024 report described Walmart building customer and associate experiences around phones, while experimenting with head-mounted displays. Associate-facing mobile ideas included navigation and help locating products; Walmart also used VR headsets for training, including active-shooter scenarios. Training in VR is distinct from deploying AR shopping tools to customers or issuing AR glasses to store workers.
The deployment logic is practical: customers already carry smartphones, and phones were already available to associates. Equipping a very large workforce with specialized headsets would add hardware cost and operational complexity. Walmart’s reported exploration of headsets is not evidence of a broad workforce rollout.

How the experiments fit a retail strategy
Walmart described a broader approach as “adaptive retail,” blending online and physical shopping with AI, AR, and immersive experiences. The potential role of visualization is to help shoppers move through different parts of a decision: discover a product, judge its likely appearance, get input from friends, and continue to a purchase. For store operations, mobile tools can also help associates find products or navigate a location. These are intended uses; the usefulness of any feature depends on product coverage, device support, asset quality, and whether shoppers choose to use it.
There are also limits that no showroom format removes. A digital preview cannot guarantee exact color under different lighting, fabric feel or fit, or perfect room scale. Camera-based experiences require permission to use the camera and may involve images of faces, bodies, or rooms. Shoppers should review Walmart’s current privacy notice and feature-specific terms for information about data handling and sharing rather than assume that every experience uses or retains imagery in the same way.
Unity and commerce inside games
On January 4, 2024, Walmart and Unity announced plans for Unity developers to integrate Walmart commerce APIs into games, apps, and real-time 3D environments. The idea was to let a virtual activity connect to a purchase of a physical product—for example, gardening tools featured in a home-improvement game. Walmart presented this as a possible new commerce channel, not as a switch that made every Unity game able to sell Walmart products immediately. The distinction between an API partnership announcement and broad, live deployment matters. Walmart’s partnership announcement sets out the plan.
What changed after the July 2024 report
The clearest subsequent milestones in the cited announcements are Walmart’s October 2024 description of Retina supporting 10 AR experiences across Walmart U.S. and Sam’s Club, and the October 2025 description of configurable, shoppable Dynamic Showroom scenes. Together, they suggest movement from a broad portfolio and roadmap toward shared infrastructure and a more specific room-shopping format. They do not establish that every 2024 concept launched, that every feature is currently available, or that all shoppers in all markets can access the same tools.

Whether that infrastructure translates into sustained customer use or measurable business gains remains a separate question from whether a compelling demonstration can be built.
