Adobe Acrobat AI Assistant can summarize a contract, answer questions about its terms, and link answers to passages in the PDF. That makes it useful for getting oriented and locating fees, deadlines, renewal rules, and obligations. It is not a lawyer or a substitute for reading the cited language: Adobe warns users not to rely on generative AI for legal advice without independent research or professional consultation.
What Acrobat AI can—and cannot—do with a contract
Acrobat AI Assistant lets you ask questions about a PDF in natural language. It can generate a summary, identify information such as parties and key terms, and provide clickable references to passages it used. Adobe announced contract-intelligence features including summaries, key-term identification, contract comparison, and citations on February 4, 2025 (Adobe’s announcement). The exact tools available can vary by plan, platform, document, and release.
- Summaries and explanations: Ask for an overview, a section-by-section summary, or a plain-language explanation of a clause.
- Targeted answers: Ask about payment, deadlines, renewal, termination, confidentiality, intellectual property, or other terms.
- Source references: Answers can cite passages and let you jump to the associated text. A citation helps you check the answer; it does not prove the interpretation is complete or legally correct.
- Multiple documents: PDF Spaces can bring PDFs, links, or text together for cross-document questions. Adobe’s PDF AI page describes support for up to 10 documents, but check the limit shown in your current account and interface (Adobe PDF AI).
- Comparison: Adobe markets comparison of contract versions. Treat this as a way to surface textual differences, not a legal redline or a determination of which change matters.
Ordinary PDF search finds text matching a term. AI Assistant can help connect a question to relevant text and explain it, but it may miss exceptions, definitions, or context elsewhere in the agreement.
How to review a contract with Acrobat AI
1. Prepare the right file
Use the final PDF or the precise version you are considering. Check that it is complete, readable, and not password-protected. For a scan, inspect the text recognition before relying on names, numbers, dates, decimal points, or words such as “not.” Poor OCR can change the meaning of a clause.

Gather related schedules, exhibits, order forms, statements of work, or incorporated terms if you are authorized to upload them and they are relevant. A question about one PDF cannot account for an attachment or external terms it has not been given.
2. Open the PDF and start AI Assistant
- Open the contract in Acrobat or Acrobat on the web.
- Select AI Assistant.
- Choose a suggested question or type your own, then select Submit.
Adobe’s documented workflow and citation controls are described in its AI Assistant guide. Adobe lists availability across Windows, macOS, web, and mobile experiences, but feature parity across platforms should not be assumed (Adobe generative-AI overview).

3. Ask for a structured first pass
Start with a section-by-section overview rather than treating a short general summary as a complete review. Then ask focused questions about the terms you need to understand. For example:
- “Identify the parties and summarize each party’s main obligations.”
- “List all payment amounts, due dates, late fees, and price-adjustment clauses.”
- “What is the initial term, and how does renewal work? Include deadlines and notice methods.”
- “What termination rights does each party have, and what obligations survive termination?”
- “Find the indemnification, limitation-of-liability, warranty, confidentiality, data-use, and intellectual-property clauses.”
- “Explain the governing-law and dispute-resolution provisions in plain English.”
- “List language that may be unusual, one-sided, or ambiguous, and cite the supporting text. Do not assume a clause is absent just because you do not find it.”
- “Create a table with clause name, page, obligation, deadline, financial impact, and responsible party.”
4. Check the answer against the contract
Click the citations for conclusions that could affect money, deadlines, liability, employment, or whether you sign. Read the complete clause—not only the highlighted passage—and check definitions, exceptions, cross-references, schedules, and exhibits. If the answer is uncertain, ask the assistant to identify what it could not establish from the supplied documents rather than forcing a yes-or-no conclusion.

For a missing-term check, use careful wording: “I did not find an explicit clause matching this description in the supplied document.” That is more defensible than concluding that the agreement has no such provision.
5. Keep the output in its place
You can copy answers and summaries, but treat them as working notes. Keep the original agreement separately and do not treat an AI-generated summary as an amendment, a legal opinion, or a replacement for the contract text.

Where AI contract review can go wrong
- Scans and image-only PDFs: OCR may misread names, dates, amounts, defined terms, or negations. Inspect the page image for any consequential figure or deadline.
- Definitions and cross-references: A clause’s meaning may depend on a defined term or another provision elsewhere. Ask the assistant to follow each cross-reference, then verify it yourself.
- Schedules and incorporated terms: An obligation may appear in an exhibit, order form, linked policy, or online terms—not in the main body. Confirm which files Acrobat considered.
- Tables and formulas: Pricing tiers, service credits, and payment schedules can be difficult to interpret. Ask for a reconstruction, then compare every entry with the original table.
- Absence and completeness: Not finding a clause does not establish that it is absent, particularly if the file set is incomplete or the language uses different wording.
- Language mismatch: Adobe says attribution may not be provided when the question and document are in different languages. For multilingual agreements, test the language behavior and do not rely on an uncited answer (Adobe user disclosures).
- Usage limits: AI requests are subject to limits that can apply by minute, hour, or day and may vary with system load and account context (Adobe usage policy).
A cited passage can still be misread, incomplete, or contradicted by another clause. Retrieval from the PDF is not the same as legal reasoning about the agreement as a whole or your business situation.

Adobe says it does not use customer documents or data to train its AI models. That policy statement does not mean files are processed locally or never leave your device. Before uploading a sensitive agreement, check your obligations and your organization’s rules. Consider whether you are authorized to share it with a cloud service, what Acrobat account and administrator controls apply, and whether the contract contains personal, financial, employment, or trade-secret information that should not be submitted.
Availability and price
Adobe’s current product materials describe AI Assistant as included with Acrobat Studio and available as an add-on for some Acrobat plans. Availability and capability can depend on plan and platform (Adobe generative-AI overview; Adobe Experience League).
On Adobe’s US pricing page, Acrobat Studio was listed at US$24.99 per month on an annual plan billed monthly when checked August 18, 2026. Adobe’s AI Assistant add-on prices vary across pages and plan contexts, so no single add-on price should be treated as universal or guaranteed at checkout. Check Adobe’s live pricing page for your country, eligibility, billing commitment, and current offer before buying.
Who should use Acrobat AI—and when to choose another route
Acrobat is a practical fit when
- You already use Acrobat and want document analysis in the same PDF workflow.
- You need a first-pass overview or answers from one or a few PDFs.
- You will use citations to locate and check the original language.
- You need a general-purpose PDF suite as well as AI features.
Consider a different tool or professional review when
- The agreement carries substantial legal, financial, employment, regulatory, or liability exposure.
- You need jurisdiction-specific advice, guaranteed clause detection, playbook enforcement, approval routing, audit trails, or automated redlining.
- Your policy prohibits cloud processing, you require offline-only review, or you need to search a large contract repository.
- The document depends on poor scans, complex tables, handwritten annotations, images, exhibits, or external terms that the tool may not reliably interpret.
Foxit offers an AI-enabled PDF ecosystem with a contract-review capability; its current plans and eligibility are listed on the Foxit AI pricing page. Dedicated legal-AI and contract-lifecycle platforms may provide repository search, clause playbooks, workflow controls, and audit trails, but their suitability and security need to be assessed for the organization using them. For a consequential agreement, a qualified lawyer or contract professional is the more relevant escalation than another general-purpose PDF assistant.
