Walmart later reported more Rollbacks, but shoppers should check local listings for today’s prices and availability.
What did Walmart’s “more than 7,000” price cuts refer to?
In May 2024, the Associated Press reported that Walmart had expanded temporary Rollbacks to nearly 7,000 grocery items, a 45% increase. Rollbacks are temporary discounts that can last a few months; the reported number did not mean that every item was permanently cheaper or that all offers would be available in every store. That figure is historical, not a live inventory of discounts. Walmart’s current affordability page gives a later company-reported count: more than 11,000 Rollbacks by the end of Q2, compared with 7,200 at the end of Q1. Those are Walmart’s figures for later reporting periods and should not be read as a guarantee about the number or prices available to an individual shopper today. Walmart’s affordability page.
Which groceries had lower prices in the 2024 report?
The AP report gave two examples of the 2024 Rollbacks. These are prices reported at that time, not current quotes:

What later Walmart price cuts were announced?
In a July 6, 2026 announcement, Walmart listed price reductions across groceries, household essentials, outdoor living, toys, and apparel. Its examples included the following advertised prices and prior prices. The announcement described offers, so these should not be treated as guaranteed current prices in every location. Walmart said shoppers could browse these offers in stores, on its website or app, and through pickup or delivery where those services are offered. Check the listing for your location and the offer’s terms before placing an order.
Do lower Rollback counts mean Walmart groceries are cheaper overall?
Not necessarily. An individual Rollback is a price on a particular item; a grocery basket study compares a selected group of items. The June 2024 Online Grocery Pricing Study found that its Walmart basket cost 0.5% less than in February 2024, but 3.1% more than in June 2023. It also found Walmart’s basket averaged 16.5% less than the baskets at six other surveyed grocers in June, down from a 19.2% gap in February. Walmart’s 2025 annual report also describes several ways it manages prices: it may absorb cost increases, reduce prices in selected categories, emphasize opening price points in some food categories, or pass cost increases on when necessary. - Confirm the size, package count, and exact product match the advertised offer; similar products may have different prices.
- Check the price and availability for your chosen store or delivery area before checkout. Pickup and delivery availability can vary by location.
- Compare the current unit price with alternatives if you are deciding whether the discount lowers the cost of your usual basket.
Walmart’s affordability page cites a 3.1% rise in food prices nationally in 2025. That is a national figure cited by Walmart, not a measurement of every household’s grocery basket or of the items on Rollback.
