Walmart is no longer merely preparing for OpenAI’s browser-using Operator. As of August 18, 2026, it is deploying its own Sparky shopping assistant and connecting Walmart to external discovery platforms including ChatGPT and Google. The practical result is a developing system in which an AI can find products, compare constraints and hand a shopper into a Walmart-controlled checkout, while the customer still approves important actions.
What the original Walmart-Operator story said
A May 16, 2025 report described Walmart preparing its catalog, technology and marketing for personal AI agents that could shop on a customer’s behalf. The idea was that an agent might search Walmart, check price and availability, respect requirements such as brand or delivery time, and potentially complete an order. The report also raised two paths: Walmart could build its own assistant, or make its systems usable by outside agents such as OpenAI’s Operator. The contemporary report treated this as preparation. Walmart’s later launches turned it into an active strategy.
The commercial shift matters because the “storefront” may become a conversation with an AI rather than a retailer’s home page. A shopper could say, “Find a family dinner for four under $60, available for same-day delivery, and ask before substituting anything.” The agent would interpret the constraints, search products and present a basket for approval.
Chatbot, shopping assistant and agent: the distinction
| System | What it does | Typical human control |
|---|---|---|
| Chatbot | Answers questions or suggests products. | The person performs the search and purchase. |
| Shopping assistant | Searches, compares products and may build a basket. | The person reviews and checks out. |
| Agent | Takes actions across websites or commerce systems under instructions. | Approval may still be required for login, payment, CAPTCHA, substitutions or checkout. |
| Autonomous purchasing agent | Uses stored identity and payment details to place and manage orders. | Only safe for narrowly defined permissions and spending limits. |
OpenAI’s original Operator could type, click and scroll through a remote browser, but it could ask the user to take over for credentials, payment details or CAPTCHA challenges. On July 17, 2025, OpenAI said Operator was being integrated into ChatGPT as ChatGPT agent; the standalone Operator service was scheduled to sunset. “Operator” therefore describes the historical preview, not a separate consumer product readers should assume is still available.

OpenAI’s Operator announcement and update also illustrate why browser automation is fragile: page redesigns, pop-ups, bot detection, ambiguous variants and security checkpoints can break a task.
Walmart’s own answer: Sparky
Walmart launched Sparky across product categories in its app in June 2025. Walmart describes it as a generative-AI shopping assistant that can:
- search products and synthesize reviews;
- compare items and make occasion-based recommendations;
- help plan meals, parties and home projects;
- accept text, image, audio and video inputs;
- expand toward reordering and service bookings.
Walmart’s technology overview says Sparky uses multi-agent orchestration, fallback handling and expanding voice and camera capabilities. The company is also applying purpose-built agents to catalog quality, customer support, inventory and fulfillment operations. Walmart’s Sparky announcement and its technology overview describe those capabilities; availability can vary by country, account, app version and device.

Walmart moved from preparation to partnerships
Walmart announced a partnership with OpenAI on October 14, 2025, intended to let customers shop Walmart through ChatGPT using an AI-first experience. On March 24, 2026, OpenAI said Walmart products discovered in ChatGPT could open a tailored Walmart environment supporting account linking, loyalty features and Walmart payments. The announcement initially described web-browser access, with iOS and Android access to follow. This is materially different from an unaffiliated browser agent scraping and clicking through Walmart.com.
Walmart also announced a Google partnership on January 11, 2026, for AI discovery and agentic commerce. Walmart’s stated objective is a multi-agent ecosystem: customers can choose where to begin, while Walmart retains the account, loyalty, payment, fulfillment and support relationship. See the OpenAI partnership announcement and Google partnership announcement.
How a Walmart AI purchase can work
- Describe the need. State budget, quantity, brand, size, delivery deadline and acceptable substitutes.
- Answer clarifying questions. The system may ask whether “cheapest” includes shipping and taxes, whether marketplace sellers are acceptable, or whether speed outranks price.
- Let the system search structured data. It can compare product identity, current price, inventory, reviews, seller, delivery or pickup windows and restrictions.
- Review the proposed basket. Check variants, quantities, substitutions, membership discounts and the delivered total.
- Approve sensitive steps. Login, payment, CAPTCHA, recurring orders and changed totals may require direct user control.
- Complete fulfillment through Walmart. Where Walmart is the merchant, it remains responsible for delivery, returns and customer support under the applicable order terms.
OpenAI’s Instant Checkout description says its protocol is intended to let agents, people and businesses cooperate while merchants retain control of fulfillment, returns, support and customer communication. OpenAI also says enabling Instant Checkout does not itself guarantee better ranking and that shopping results are intended to be organic and unsponsored; those are OpenAI’s claims, not an independent finding. Why product data matters more than a polished webpage
Human shoppers can infer missing details from photos or page layout. Agents need consistent, machine-readable facts. A useful commerce feed must keep these fields current:

A visually attractive listing with stale inventory can be worse for an agent than a plain listing with complete data. Walmart says catalog enhancement and connecting product information to conversational experiences are part of its AI strategy. Walmart’s OpenAI announcement describes that emphasis.

What agentic commerce means for Walmart—and shoppers
- New entry points: ChatGPT and Gemini can become discovery channels alongside Walmart’s app and website.
- Less search friction: A conversational request can assemble a complete meal, project or event basket.
- Relationship control: Walmart has an incentive to keep account, loyalty, payment and fulfillment functions in its environment rather than surrendering the customer relationship to an AI platform.
- Operational automation: Agents can assist inventory, support and delivery workflows as well as consumer shopping.
- Retail-media change: Advertising may need to supply machine-readable prices, attributes, coupons and delivery incentives in addition to persuasive creative.
The last point remains a strategic possibility, not a verified Walmart pricing policy. The 2025 discussion about retailers detecting bots or changing prices for them was speculative; there is no evidence here that Walmart currently uses agent detection to alter prices.

Common user errors
- “Cheapest” may mean the lowest sticker price, not the lowest delivered total.
- An agent may choose the wrong size, flavor, quantity, brand or seller.
- A marketplace listing may replace Walmart inventory without the shopper noticing.
- A broad “restock” instruction can create unwanted recurring purchases.
Security and retailer risks
- Stored payment credentials and account takeover can turn a convenience feature into a financial loss.
- Malicious pages can use prompt injection to redirect an agent.
- Fake listings, fraudulent sellers and compromised browser sessions threaten both shoppers and merchants.
- CAPTCHA and bot controls may block legitimate automation, while high-volume browsing can look like abuse.
- Responsibility can be unclear when an AI provider, platform and merchant each handle part of the transaction.
Controls worth enabling
- Require approval above a dollar threshold.
- Require approval for new merchants, marketplace sellers and substitutions.
- Use a dedicated payment method or spending limit.
- Disable automatic reordering unless explicitly enabled.
- Require final confirmation whenever the delivered total changes.
- Keep the order number and a complete action log.
- Separate product research permission from purchase authorization.
Human review is especially important for medication and supplements, child-safety equipment, expensive electronics, uncertain clothing sizes, perishables, complex warranties, recurring orders and purchases with legal, financial or privacy consequences.

Protocols are emerging, not settled
OpenAI’s ACP is one attempt to standardize how an AI agent, shopper and merchant exchange product, order and payment information. Google and Shopify are promoting a Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP). Proprietary Walmart integrations, ACP, UCP and other approaches may coexist; no single protocol can yet be declared the winner. For consumers, the practical question is whether a given integration provides accurate data, clear approval boundaries and an identifiable merchant of record.

What this means for your wallet
Agent shopping is most useful for repeat household purchases, grocery replenishment, compatibility searches, event planning and familiar products with precise specifications. It is not a reason to surrender purchasing control. Set a maximum delivered price, specify whether marketplace sellers are allowed, approve substitutions individually and make the agent create a cart before it can place an order. For high-stakes or expensive purchases, use AI for research and comparison, then complete checkout yourself.
Walmart is no longer waiting for AI agents to arrive. It is trying to shape the systems through which they discover products and transact—while keeping the customer relationship inside Walmart’s account, loyalty, payment and fulfillment network.
