Walmart did not reach its 2024 Walmart Health target. The company planned to grow its clinic network through 2024, but on April 30, 2024 it announced that it would close all 51 of its operating centers and discontinue Walmart Health Virtual Care. Walmart’s own Walmart Health information page says all locations were permanently closed as of June 29, 2024.
The headline figure also needs a correction. The 70 in the revised plan was a total number of centers by year-end, not 70 additions. The revised plan called for 22 new centers in 2024, on top of the 48 reported at the time.
The timeline from plan to closure
The plan changed twice in about 14 months. Each stage came from a different source, so the table shows who reported what and when.
| Date | Source | What it said |
|---|---|---|
| March 2, 2023 | Walmart Corporate announcement, with remarks by Dr. David Carmouche, Senior Vice President, Omnichannel Care | 28 new Walmart Health locations planned for 2024, and more than 75 centers across the United States by the end of that year |
| March 29, 2024 | Forbes, reporting by Bruce Japsen | 48 centers in five states, 22 additions planned for 2024, and 70 total by year-end; Arizona expansion expected in 2025 rather than 2024 |
| April 30, 2024 | Walmart Corporate announcement, “Walmart Health Is Closing” | Closure of all 51 Walmart Health centers across five states, and shutdown of Walmart Health Virtual Care |
| June 29, 2024 | Walmart’s Walmart Health information page | All locations permanently closed and no longer seeing patients |
The reported counts do not fully match. Forbes described 48 centers in March 2024, while Walmart’s April closure notice referred to 51. The sources do not reconcile the difference, so this article reports both figures as published.

What Walmart originally planned in 2023
Walmart’s March 2023 plan was its largest step in clinic expansion. The company said the new centers would move Walmart Health into Arizona and Missouri and deepen its presence in Texas. The proposed 2024 openings were distributed as follows.
| Market | Planned new centers for 2024 |
|---|---|
| Dallas metro area | 10 |
| Houston | 8 |
| Phoenix | 6 |
| Kansas City, Missouri | 4 |
| Total | 28 |
Planned services and format
Walmart described centers of about 5,750 square feet located inside Walmart Supercenters. The planned services were primary care, dental care, behavioral health, labs and X-rays, audiology, and Walmart Health Virtual Care. Walmart also said it was integrating Epic’s electronic health record system across its Walmart Health locations.

The revised 70-center target
By March 2024, Forbes reported that Walmart had 48 centers in five states and planned 22 more in 2024, for a total of 70 by year-end. That was 2 fewer than the “more than 75” in the 2023 announcement, and the number of new openings dropped from 28 to 22. The Arizona expansion moved from 2024 into 2025.

Why Walmart closed the centers
In its April 30, 2024 announcement, Walmart said: “Through our experience managing Walmart Health centers and Walmart Health Virtual Care, we determined there is not a sustainable business model for us to continue.” The statement was issued by the company rather than attributed to a named executive.

Walmart cited a challenging reimbursement environment, escalating operating costs, and a resulting lack of profitability. These are the company’s own explanations. The sources reviewed for this article do not include independent financial analysis of the clinics’ results.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What closed and what continued
The closure covered Walmart Health clinics and Walmart Health Virtual Care. Walmart said its pharmacies and Vision Centers would continue to provide health and wellness services after the clinic closure. Those services were not part of the Walmart Health clinic network, so readers should not assume that a pharmacy or Vision Center closed with it.

What the figures do and do not establish
- The 70-center figure is a revised target reported in March 2024. It is not a verified count of centers open at any point.
- The sources do not establish a precise count of centers open at year-end 2024, or a complete site-by-site opening history.
- The original 28 additions and the revised 22 additions are different plans and should not be combined.
- The square footage estimates differ. Walmart’s 2023 plan described about 5,750 square feet, while Forbes reported about 5,400 square feet for new centers in March 2024.
What this means for readers
For a consumer or investor, the timeline shows how quickly a corporate healthcare expansion can reverse. A plan announced in March 2023 was revised downward in March 2024 and then ended in April 2024. Any plan to use a clinic in a retailer’s expansion should be checked against the most recent company notice, not the original announcement.
