S&P 500 futures fell 0.1%, Dow futures rose 0.1%, and Nasdaq futures dropped 0.6%. The figures are snapshots from the Associated Press dispatch, not closing prices or a measure of the full session.
What was moving U.S. markets before the bell?
The futures split reflected competing forces at the start of the trading day. The Dow edged higher, while the broader S&P 500 and technology-heavy Nasdaq futures declined. Semiconductor weakness was especially visible in Nasdaq futures, though the dispatch does not establish that chip shares alone drove the index move.

| U.S. market indicator | Reported move | Time window |
|---|---|---|
| S&P 500 futures | Down 0.1% | Before the opening bell, October 13, 2026 |
| Dow futures | Up 0.1% | Before the opening bell, October 13, 2026 |
| Nasdaq futures | Down 0.6% | Before the opening bell, October 13, 2026 |
These percentages, like the other market figures below, were reported by the Associated Press and are not independently recalculated here. Futures indicate where contracts were trading before the regular session; they do not guarantee how the indexes will finish.
What did bank earnings mean for the market?
JPMorgan Chase shares gained 1.4% in premarket trading even though the bank missed quarterly targets, according to the AP dispatch. That combination shows why a share-price reaction should not be read as a simple scorecard of whether a company beat or missed expectations: investors may weigh multiple elements of results and outlook, and the report does not specify which factors drove the move.

Citigroup, Wells Fargo, and Goldman Sachs were also scheduled to release results on Tuesday, October 13. UnitedHealth Group and Johnson & Johnson were among the healthcare companies reporting. The dispatch does not include full earnings figures for those companies, so no conclusions about their performance or broader sector results can be drawn from this snapshot.
Why were chip stocks falling again?
Semiconductor shares were under pressure in premarket trading after losses the previous day. Nvidia, Broadcom, and Qualcomm each fell about 1%, while Micron dropped 3%, as reported by AP.

The dispatch attributed the sector’s weak sentiment to investor unease about the AI boom and reported advances by China’s CXMT that could increase competition for Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix, and Micron Technology. That is the explanation presented in the report, not proof that either concern alone caused the share moves.

How did markets compare across regions?
Asia’s markets were uneven, with steep losses in South Korea and Japan alongside small gains in Hong Kong and mainland China. By midday in Europe, the major indexes listed in the dispatch were modestly higher.
| Region and market | Reported move and level | Time window |
|---|---|---|
| South Korea, Kospi | Down 5.5% to 6,035.35; had fallen more than 7% intraday and traded below 6,000 | October 13, 2026; intraday decline and subsequent reported level |
| Japan, Nikkei 225 | Down 1.8% to 67,777.52 | October 13, 2026 |
| Hong Kong, Hang Seng | Up 0.3% to 24,345.22 | October 13, 2026 |
| China, Shanghai Composite | Up 0.1% to 3,800.86 | October 13, 2026 |

| United Kingdom, FTSE 100 | Up 0.7% | Midday in Europe, October 13, 2026 |
| France, CAC 40 | Up 0.1% | Midday in Europe, October 13, 2026 |
| Germany, DAX | Up 0.3% | Midday in Europe, October 13, 2026 |
The Kospi’s reported 5.5% decline followed a sharper intraday fall of more than 7%, so the closing or later-session outcome cannot be inferred from the figure. The dispatch likewise provides no closing levels for the U.S. or European markets.
What happened to oil prices?
Crude benchmarks fell by roughly 2% in the reported snapshot despite continuing Middle East tensions. Brent crude declined 1.9% to $104.62 a barrel, while U.S. benchmark crude dropped 2.1% to $91.78. AP compared Brent with roughly $72 a barrel in late February before the Iran war. The comparison provides context for the reported price level, not a forecast or a full account of the forces affecting oil.

What this market snapshot can—and cannot—tell you
- It can show the opening setup: futures were mixed, banks were beginning to report, semiconductor shares were weak, and oil was lower at the time of the dispatch.
- It cannot establish the full-day result: the figures are time-specific snapshots, not final index or commodity prices.
- It does not provide complete bank results: JPMorgan’s reported share move and missed targets are not a substitute for full earnings details, and results for the other named companies are not included.
- It does not prove a single cause for chip declines: AI-related investor concerns and CXMT competition were reported as factors in sentiment, not independently demonstrated explanations for each stock’s move.
